Game 43: Devils @ Vancouver

New Jersey Devils at Vancouver Canucks, Jan 13, 2009 10:00 PM EST

The New Jersey Devils are looking to get their road trip back into the winning form they visit Vancouver tomorrow.  They're called the Canucks but these days you might as well call them the Sundins.  The big story is that Mats Sundin is wearing the Orca C and has done so since January 7th: the team is 1-2 since his return with Sundin putting up one goal and sitting for 6 minutes in the box. So he's a little rusty.

Star-divide

And the team's struggling more than a little at home. The Canucks have not won in their last four games at home and they are coming off back to back home losses: to St. Louis and to San Jose.  Sundin was not enough to give the team a boost throughout those games.  In fact, he took the penalty that led to the eventual game winning power play goal for the other team!   So sad!  The other lionized Canuck has finally taken to the ice, but Roberto Luongo will not play tonight according to Chere.  I'm not sure who will start tonight for Vancouver - it could be Jason LaBarbera.  It could be Curtis Sanford. It could be a shooter tutor.  I just don't know.  But it won't be the talented Luongo.

For the Devils, it will be Scott Clemmensen getting the start which is quite interesting.  It's not like he blew the game against Anaheim, so I suppose Sutter wants to show a little confidence in him after the 4-3 loss.  The real storyline within the game will be to see who's looking to make a statement.  Brendan Shanahan suiting up in Devils red is imminent and according to Chere's article (it was in the Star-Ledger this morning), someone will have to sit.  Given Shanahan's skill on special teams and that he mainly got fourth line duty in even strength situations, I'd take a close look at Jay Pandolfo and Mike Rupp.  If you were to ask me who sits for Shanahan, I think it's got to be one of them. And given that the key word is special teams for Shanahan, not just the power play, it could be Pandolfo before Rupp.   Keep an eye on both of them and the special teams units when they're out on the ice - they're not just competing for a job, but perhaps their spot on the team.

Keep an eye out, also, for two Canucks in particular.  The preview at Vancouver's official website highlights puck possession as being quite important.  This is true for New Jersey. In their recent losses, I've noticed that they have a tendency to concede possession too easily, especially with errant and/or ill-advised passes. And if the Devils can't hold onto the puck well tonight, then expect the Canucks to get it to the Sedin twins.  They've been excellent for the team on offense and the Devils' defense would do well to keep them from creating and finshing plays regardless of whether it's Henrik or Daniel.

2008 - Henrik Sedin 44 7 34 41 8 30 1 0 2 0 74 9.5

2008 - Daniel Sedin 44 21 24 45 11 16 4 0 5 1 155 13.5

For the Devils tonight, in addition to the fourth line and the special teams unit, I would also keep an eye out on Zach Parise.  He didn't have a very good game against Anaheim.  It took him a majority of the game to get a shot on net and the goal he scored looked to me more as an own goal by Travis Moen.  For the Devils to really have a good chance to win this one, he'll have to rebound.  Knowing Parise, it's a good bet he'll do just that.

And speaking of eyes, I have to be honest, mine aren't going to be open this late.  Even if I manage to stay up late enough to watch the whole game; I'm not going to be able to put out anywhere-close-to-decent thought about the game.  It's more likely I'll watch one period, go to bed, watch the rest of the game tomorrow afternoon, and then give my thoughts.  For those of you not on the east coast, you'll probably see all of this and enjoy/despise/be indifferent for the game. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments: just keep it clean, keep it relevant, and keep it Jersey.

UPDATE: Chere got words on what Sutter said to the team this morning.  It's relevant to tonight's game and I hope this time, the Devils will respond and come out with a better game.  At worst, it's something interesting to read as we in the east wait 3 hours for this one to start.

I agree it might be Pandolfo. Without such a heavy reliance on a checking line his minutes are down, he’s not having a great year and hasn’t been as effective defensively. Sure he’ll chip the occasional clutch goal, but he seems to have lost a step. If Shanahan is simply playing at the level he was at last year (when he was supposedly hurt for long stretches) its a no-brainer. He brings everything Pandolfo can plus a bit more offensively.

Rupp brings more to the table and has been playing effectively most of the season. Along with Holik he brings a big, physical presence, plus he’ll drop the gloves and defend our skill forwards (e.g. the fight in LA following the Parise hit). As Chico has become fond of pointing out he’s also becoming a better fighter (read: more intimidating). Shanahan is tough, but doesnt bring that or Rupp’s size to the table.

I dont see Clarkson or Holik coming out either. Although Holik would likely sit out first as Rupp can shift to center. Its not a bad thing to have such “problems”, Ill take it over wondering if we even have a fourth line.

The moment I read Lou say “specialty teams” at Fire & Ice, my first thought was, “Well, Pando, time to pick it up!” While Rupp and Pandolfo’s offensive contributions are similar; Rupp can at least hit people and show enough on the ice to make a good play here and there, Pandolfo has just had a forgettable season. Which is a shame as he was on his way to have his best year until it was sandbagged by injury.

Personally, if Shanahan can pot in a few power play goals and help increase the efficiency on the PK, he’d be going a long way to help the team. On some nights, one more killed penalty or one power play goal can make all the difference. I don’t expect a big contract, but given that his downside is Igor Larionov; there’s not a whole lot of risk here.

Wow

Goalie change less than 4 mins in. That is remarkable.

A little surprised

Where’s Kirk McLean when you need him?

No offense to Steve Cangialosi

But it’s really nice to have Doc back these last few games.

Definitely

Steve is perfect for the pregame, postgame and intermission reports. He does a great job with it. His announcing can be hit and miss, but his replacement for the reports was unbearable to listen to.

We call him “Tangialosi”, and for a while last season he sat opposite Ken Taneyko.

Ooh!

That was embarrassing. Takesies!

Wow

The Canucks look completely lost. Playing terrible hockey. I’ll take it though.

Any news on Shanny?

I gather he’s skating on his own, but do we know when he might be ready for action?

by Eric Simon on Jan 13, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

I'm guessing it will be a while

It took Sundin like two or three weeks and judging from that last clip, Sundin doesn’t exactly look “ready” yet. And really it isn’t that urgent to get Shanny in there yet I don’t think.

Good gravy!

Clarkson loses it on a wraparound, a play he’s familiar with, but it goes right to Rolston who slots it in easy – because LaBarbera fell down on the wraparound.

Parise finishes a two-on-one that started from a great pass by Langenbrunner; salvaged by Zajac’s skates; and assisted by LaBarbera not taking a big enough angle and not getting enough of Zajac’s shot.

Elias hits Zubrus who dumps it, picks it from Sanford, and Gionta actually finishes it!

The Devils look great and it’s been very helpful that Canucks goalies are terrible.

Oh, THE Mats Sundin fell down just after picking it from White in the neutral one.

And the Canucks’ attack happens to have the poise of someone who just drank 3 Red Bulls.

I couldn’t have asked for a better first period, and it’s not even over yet!

Canucks

It’s startling how different their uniforms are from their heyday in the mid-nineties.

The new uni

is more of a throwback to their older uniforms. I personally like the ones from the mid 90s better. I would guess that the Canucks have changed their uniform more frequently than any other team in sports over the past 15 years.

THE TOEDRAG!!!!!

Clarkson uses the toedrag at the right time, takes a shot and it beats SANFORD!

But it unfortunately goes wide. The Canuck fans are rather unhappy.

CHEERING UPDATE

Boos are cheers, right?

I hope the Devils just keep this pace up for the second period!

A sighting!

SIGHTED: The Canucks set up a good play on offense.

SIGHTED: Scott Clemmensen makes a point-blank save to show that there is one goalie playing well in this game.

Bah

You can only survive that kind of onslaught for so long before breaking.

by Eric Simon on Jan 13, 2009 11:13 PM EST reply actions

Not a great period, but...

…But Vancouver really got some fight in them and showed starting with that first power play. Thankfully, Clemmensen came to play. The Devils’ attack wasn’t able to easily beat the Canucks to the puck or snag rebounds; but they are still threatening.

I’d like to see the Devils put this one away in the third rather than “bend and not break” to have Vancouver pull within one. But I won’t see it tonight. Goodnight!

Huge goal

I thought it was one pass too many, but the result was mighty fine.
