Gulitti: Shanahan Signs

Tom Gulitti is reporting that Shanahan has signed a 1 year, $800,000 contract with the New Jersey Devils.  Given the timing of the deal, Shanahan will make about half of that amount.  Gulitti thinks Shanahan will join the team in Columbus, but he will not play that night.  And he probably won't until he gets a few practices in, at least.

I was surprised when the deal was announced four days ago.  Steve Lepore rounded up much of the Devils reactions across the blogs and it was mixed then.  After thinking about it for a few days and seeing that the contract is, indeed, only for one year and a small amount of money, I'm thinking this is a good, low-risk move.

Star-divide

I feel that this would be the worst case scenario, short of injury :  Shanahan does not help the special teams, he's too slow to keep up with the rest of the team, he doesn't contribute all that much, and so he's benched in favor of another forward.   While that's not great, what do the Devils really lose?  They have plenty of players who can play on the fourth line, and the team has had fully capable, though not great, special teams units all season.  All at a cost of, what, less than a half of a million dollars?   It's a lot like Igor Larionov, who did very poorly in New Jersey, but it wasn't a major issue for the rest of the team.  If Shanahan falters or gets hurt, I don't see it wrecking this year's team - given how successful they've been so far.  Sutter will just turn back to his original lineups and all would likely be restored.  That's the worst case scenario I can think of and it's not that big of a risk, really.

Personally, I see Shanahan getting time on the secondary penalty killing and power play units to give them a boost and another weapon.  They haven't  been consistently good and Shanahan can definitely help there. He can add some skill  and more of an offensive edge to a fourth line, giving Sutter more options as to what do with that last line.  If he clicks with Holik and/or Rupp, that would really boost the overall attack.  Of course, you can't ignore all of that experience he brings into the locker room.    What's also important about this signing is that this is not at all like Vancouver signing Sundin, where he'll be expected to be the man. From Gulitti, Lou expects him to be an "full time player," but I don't think he's expecting him to be a big, impact player.    He just has to contribute here and there for a few minutes each night.  He did it last year with the Rangers, with 23 goals and 23 assists in 73 games.  I don't see why he wouldn't have something left in the proverbial tank for New Jersey.

Now here are two rather important questions that I'd like to hear your opinions on:

1) Who do the Devils sit in favor of Shanahan?  Right now, I'd say Pandolfo, who is having a poor season and has been invisible, especially as of late.  Mike Rupp may not be productive either, but he's physical, brings character to the ice, and gives a good effort.

2) When, not if, the Devils do make a trade, who do the Devils move?  There's been much hay raised about what number Shanahan will wear (source: Chere): and I have a suspicion that #14 could be made available by the end of February.  If Shanahan starts off real well, then it could be sooner.

Have your say and I hope Shanahan's second time as a Devil will be as successful for him as some other seasons where he primarily wore red.

Good terms, but still confused

The terms of the deal sound like bringing Shanny in is a good idea, but I’m still bewildered as to why Uncle Louie would consider doing so. The Devs have been winning without Shanny when they went on that brilliant run in December and keep on winning without Marty. To me, this doesn’t make sense. Still, I like to see how his second tour of duty turns out.

Oh, and it still bothers me that most of his memorable moments come from his tenure with OSOS.

Special teams

I really believe it’s to boost the special teams. Now, the Devils are 16th in both categories (18% on power play, 81.2% on PK); but if you go back a few weeks, they were hovering in the bottom third in both the power play and penalty kill. On some nights, that can make the difference between winning and losing, or keeping a lead and having it blown up, or coming from behind or falling short.

If Shanny helps out there, that would be the biggest contribution he could make overall. Because if the Devils can become more consistent on both of those areas, that really makes the Devils more complete.

I wouldn’t worry about his Ranger tenure when he did everything for 9 seasons in Detroit. I’d like to think his 2 seasons with the Rangers were…experimentation.

Thank You...

For mentioning his longer (and more successful, I may add) tenure with Detroit. Maybe because his stint with the Rags is still fresh in my mind that I’m not keen on him.

Your point is well taken, but the improvement you mentioned in their special teams prior to the signing is proof of my concern about adding Shanny. I look at that and say their ST can go nowhere but up after their improvement, so why fix what’s going good? Then again, I’m not the GM and I’m glad Uncle Louie doesn’t share my mindset (thank God, b/c if he did, we’d be in trouble).

Concerns aside, my best hope is that Shanahan can actually be useful in the ST department.

I think the inconcsistency has killed them worse than their overall rankings would indicate.

They can have 3 PP goals one game, and then go 0 for 7 the game before. It’s almost mind numbing.

Good move, one that was rumored on and off for months. It really cant hurt the team in any way. If Shanahan plays around his level last year (when he was supposedly hurt for long stretches) the offense just gets deeper. If he’s subpar, as John says, just go back to who was playing before Shanny came in. He’ll be a good influence on younger players like Parise, Zajac, and Clarkson and just brings a wealth of experience. The move doesnt cost anything capwise so there is still flexibility to make a move closer to the deadline. Plus imagine the potential upside, Shanahan is as good or better than last season, Brodeur comes back and is sharp, and the Devils maintain there level of play. The Devils look pretty strong…

I think you have to sit Pandolfo mostly.

He’s having a down year for him. I’m sure Rupp will also be seeing his share of scratches over it as well though. I agree that they will make a trade of a forward as well. It almost has to be a foregone conclusion that either Weekes or Clemmy is gone if Marty can come back completely healthy. Which one of those two would you guys rather see go?

shanahan

my guess is that sutter rotates the thirteenth/healthy scratch forward the way that they currently often rotate the seventh/healthy scratch defenseman although obviously none of the players on the top two lines are going to be a healthy scratch

TG update

In his comments he said that he heard that Sutter was thinking of playing him with Rolston (who would be moving to center). I would assume Clarkson would be the other winger on that line. It would be interesting because it would leave Madden, Holik, Rupp and Pandolfo for the fourth line. If it works we might see Madden traded otherwise I’d have to guess Pando (assuming Madden can play wing).

I'll take Lou's word for it

Quick — name 3 stupid moves he’s made.

OK then, ONE.

Ask me again after Shanahan’s played 10 games. I’m thinking no one will be complaining then. Rolston’s finding the groove and this’ll be another option on the PP. Who couldn’t use another option on the PP?

Vishnevski and Rachunek spring to mind.

That being said, I don’t think this is a dumb move.

Vladamir Malakhov, Dan McGillis – but both were what’s left after Scott Niedermayer took his sweet time on deciding teams.

Andrei Zyuzin and Oleg Tverdovsky weren’t super great. Richard Smehlik never added much and sometimes was slower than Ken Daneyko.

Lou’s not perfect. But he’s so damn good at what he does. Remember, he turned Janssen into Salvador.

I meant “stupid” like Barry Pederson for Cam Neely: that kind of “stupid”; not the “it didn’t work out as well as we hoped” kind. Not perfect, no; but far from making stupid moves. Like I said, wait ten games on Shanny and then we’ll see.

Well that officially takes him out of Penguins rumors ;-)
