Devils @ WJC 2009: Quarterfinal Update
Shock of shocks! An upset finally took place last night; the USA lost to Slovakia 5-3! Jaroslav Janus was a rock in net for the Slovaks, stopping 44 of 47 shots on net. Thomas McCollum was a sieve in net for the Americans, giving up 3 in the first period and a total of 5 on only 19 shots. Brutal. And that made all the difference.
Mike Hoeffel didn't get any points only 2 shots on net in the big upset loss. He, along with his compatriots, will play one more game for fifth place against the Czech Republic on Sunday. The last time they played was in the preliminaries, and the Americans won 4-3. Hopefully, they can at least get a win; but not making the medal round this year has to be a disappointment considering all the strides USA Hockey has made in U-20 tournaments.
Mattias Tedenby and Sweden will play Slovakia in the semifinals this afternoon. Patrice Cormier and Canada will play the Czech Republic Russia in the other semifinal tonight. Winners will play for the gold on Monday night; losers will play for the bronze on Monday afternoon.

No way,
Czech U-20s are so good, they’re playing for 5th and into the medal round
Just kidding. Good catch there; I made the correction.

Cormier
Before the start of the third period in the Canada game, the commentators talked briefly about Cormier. They talked about what a good character he is and what an asset to team Canada he is. They noted his physical play.
Sweet. I heard that he was there to throw some pain-bombs and, well, has done just that. He even got a goal. It’s a shame that 2 of the 3 Devils at this tournament are in roles you can’t see on the boxscore; and, well, that’s my only access to what’s going on. His first of the tourney, I believe.

Canada/Russia
What a finish to the 3rd period. Canada ties it up with 5 seconds left. Incredible finish to an overall amazing game. Cormier seems to bring a real physical presence, yet still has some hands with the puck on his stick. Also, Tedenby had a solid game for Sweden in their victory over Slovakia (2 assists). Should be a great game on Monday night.
