Devils @ WJC 2009: Semifinal Update
The stage has been set for the Gold Medal Game to determine the champion of the 2009 World Junior Championships. Sweden defeated the Slovakia with a strong third period effort to win 5-3. Canada got a big scare, but they were calm enough in the shootout to beat the Czech Republic 6-5.
1. Mattias Tedenby - Tedenby picked up 2 assists and a shot in Sweden's win. Tedenby primarily set up two goals in that 4 goal third period from Sweden, including the eventual game winner. He will have to continue to produce for the Tre Kronor to have a chance against Canada.
2. Patrice Cormier - Cormier's role has been physical, but he finally got his first goal of the tournament in last night's game in the first period. It was shortly equalized by Dmitri Klopov of Russia 16 seconds later; but what can you do? Canada goes on to the chance to win yet another gold medal in front of their home crowd.
Mike Hoeffel and the American U-20 team will take on Russia tonight for fifth place. Canada and Sweden will face off on Monday night.
