Game #4 of 82 Game Thread - Devils at Florida Panthers

New Jersey Devils at Florida Panthers, Oct 10, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

TV:MSG, The Regular One (HD, pre-game 6:30)

Radio: WFAN 660AM

Preview: Scroll down for ours.  For a Panthers take on things, head over to our comrades at Litter Box Cats.

Springsteen Saturdays: While typically, our game threads will feature a song to pump you up and make you think about the game tonight, Saturdays we will devote to our beloved Boss.  Because we're all Devils fans here, how can we be more Jersey?

So what tune fits tonight?  "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" will do the job:

Tear drops on the city
Bad Scooter searching for his groove
Seem like the whole world walking pretty
And you can't find the room to move
Well everybody better move over, that's all
I'm running on the bad side
And I got my back to the wall

Join me in the comments.  As Fischer is wan to remind you, keep the comments clean, you keep them on-topic (tangents OK, talking about the Devils/Panthers is OK, but I don't want to turn this into a 80s thrash revival thread Bruce Springsteen lovefest), and support the New Jersey Devils.  Lets find that groove.

Devils need to survive the initial push. This is a team that played (and got spanked) in a game last night. Plus it’s their home opener. The 1st period needs to be held steady. At least a tie out of this period.

Langenbrunner just misses on a fade away from the slot on a great pass from Zajac.

Another penalty. The Nieds-Pando-Rollie line draws it (NPR?). 2nd Power Play Devils.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 10, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

The 1st PP Unit (Parise-Zajac-Clarkson-Martin-Langenbrunner) looks better this time. More cohesive and some plays being attempted.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 10, 2009 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

2nd unit is Halischuk-Zubrus-Bergfors-Rolston-Greene. Not much going on for these guys.

Bergfors creates a good chance for Zubrus, but is stopped by Vokoun. Then Vokoun makes another save on a diving across Zubrus. This line’s starting to generate some good stuff.

Vokoun recovered real well to stop that and Zubrus was being checked down by a defender.

I’m back from the game and saw the last few minutes of the first. I like the shot disparity; but are the Devils looking as good as the shot totals suggest?

No Devil team can ever look as good as shot totals suggest. The Cats came out really well in the first 5 minutes, but were dead for the last 15. Devils failed to take advantage of 2 Power Plays, the 2nd much better than the 1st. All in all, this next period’s a large one.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 10, 2009 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

Ah, of course. Let’s see if the Devils will perform much better in this second period.

Andy Greene a great play to create a chance in front that missed, and then another that Vokoun has to hold the line on. What happened to Andy Greene?

I remember that after Anssi Salmela started last season, Greene came in and played GREAT. I think he has extra motivation in a similar way given that he’s got a job to earn.
