Five New Jersey Devils who have Impressed Early in 2009-10
The New Jersey Devils started the 2009-10 regular season in an awful manner: losing miserably 5-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers and then not able to pull out a win against the Rangers two days later, losing 3-2. Both at home, both riddled with errors, and both leaving a bad taste in the mouths of Devils fans.
Yet, the Devils went on the road and did the unexpected - they earned 3 wins on the road in 3 games. They got a miracle equalizer against Tampa Bay and then won in the shootout; after which, they got a late power play goal to go up 3-2 on Florida in regulation; and then they came from behind in Washington to tie the Capitals, leading to an eventual shootout victory. Brodeur, for all intents and purposes is back; and the Devils displayed great heart all the way to the end of each game to earn all the points.
While the team can certainly improve in a variety of manners, a number of Devils have certainly impressed in the first 5 games of the season so far. In fact, I went ahead and made a "impressive so far" team. With a little break before the next home game, I think it's fair to give them credit for giving a good effort through the lows and highs of the young 2009-10 season.
My Early Impressive (So Far) Devils Unit
Rob Niedermayer-Travis Zajac-David Clarkson
Paul Martin-Andy Greene
Travis Zajac was finally held pointless after a three game point streak in last night against Washington, but that shouldn't diminish what he's done so far. He's won faceoffs, leading the team by winning 53.9% of his draws. He's taken plenty of shots, 18, and is the team's second most-prolific shooter behind Zach Parise's 26 shots on goal. He scored a last-second goal against Tampa Bay that could be seen as an early turning point of the season. He currently leads the Devils in goals (3), power play goals (2), and tied in points (5). While Zach Parise is bombing away with shots - and he'll get his points, oh yes, he will - Zajac has been the star of the first line and the first power play unit, making few mistakes so far this season. He's enjoying his hockey and I hope it continues.
Whereas Zajac's slot in the lineup has been secured, David Clarkson has been more in flux. He started on the second line as a winger, got shifted down to the third line and even the fourth in the Florida game, only to return to the second line. Why? It's not because Lemaire thinks Clarkson is playing poorly - he's not. It's because Clarkson has been productive on the ice and he wants to see who he meshes best with. One thing is for sure, he's great in front of the crease; having scored both of his goals from short-range. Moreover, he's been setting players up as well with 3 assists. All of this from a guy who has only averaged 14:02 a game so far? Wow. If he keeps this up, Clarkson will prove all of the previews calling him a "breakout player" absolutely right.
Among all the new signings the Devils made this summer, no one has impressed like Rob Niedermayer. Andrew Peters and Ilkka Pikkarainen have yet to do much of anything of note on the fourth line; Cory Murphy has looked too tentative to start the season; and Yann Danis hasn't even played a game. Niedermayer came into the Devils late, he didn't go through training camp, and yet he hasn't looked out of shape at all. His late addition hasn't caused any issues within the Devils; in fact, Brian Rolston has said he's been a "calming influence in the dressing room and on the ice." This defensive center has looked decent enough on a checking unit with rotating wingers and Jay Pandolfo, he hasn't been terrible (but not great) at faceoffs (48%), and he's made some big plays to have contributed 2 goals and 2 assists already. He's fitting in well and he has certainly done more than what I expected so far this season.
Defense in general hasn't been a strong point for the Devils, but I feel two defenders deserve some notice. Paul Martin went from poor to a force in the past few games - almost as good of an example of the Devils' fortunes. Yes, he's a -4. I say, so what? He's defused so many offensive rushes against, he's moving the puck with more confidence with each game, and he's returning to his form on defense. In even strength situations, the shots against per 60 minutes are at an amazing 21.2 according to Behind the Net. That is a 4 shot drop from the 25.2 shots/60 when he's not on the ice, proof of his strength on the ice. Once Johnny Oduya gets his issues sorted out and stops making mistakes at the wrong time, that minus will become a plus in due time.
Andy Greene has been the other impressive Devil defenseman in my opinion. After Cory Murphy was unimpressive in the first two games, Greene got his shot in the Tampa Bay game - and he made his mark. He was smart in his own end, assisted on Zajac's last-second equalizer, and his movement with the puck was great. Greene played so well, Lemaire gave him 21:18 of ice time and paired him with Martin by the end of the game. OK, Greene hasn't been a big stopper; as the shots against per 60 minutes has risen to 30.3 to when he's on the ice per Behind the Net. Only Murphy has been worse in that regard. On the flipside, when he's on the ice, the shots for per 60 minutes in even strength situations are also the highest on the team at 31.3. Icing on the cake, for Greene may have solidified his spot on the roster with the last three games.
Of course, it's early in the season. There's plenty of games left and who has impressed so far may play poorly later on. At the same time, this could be the start of a great season for any (or all, hopefully) of these players. Still, after 5 games, going from a low point to a relatively higher point in terms of team performance and results, these five have stuck out from what I've seen so far. And so, they deserve some credit for that.

Bergfors has looked good and if he had another point or two, he’d make the list. Neidermayer kind of had low expectations but seems, at least for now, appears to be an upgrade on what Madden was for us last year (I am sure the glass that is high and wide of the net do not miss Madden). Travis has been a bit more selfish with the puck which is great for him, may be bad for Zach’s goal total though) and Clarkson has been so good in front of the other teams net. He certainly looks like he can break that 20 goal mark for the first time in his young career.
Well, Zach’s got 26 shots on net…I don’t think he’s short on chances.
I do agree that if Bergfors has done more, he’d be here. But Niedermayer, a defensive player who has never gotten more than 20 goals except in 1995-96 with Florida, getting 2 early certainly sticks out a little more despite not going through training camp or preseason.

you know, no one really impresses me game after game like Parise, just by sheer effort alone, I mean he is just seemingly everywhere at once. I’ve also been impressed by Martys overall improvement in these last few games. I would like a chance to see what Danis could do on a team that doesn’t suck.
And that is why the points will eventually come for Parise. Again, he’s got 26 shots already (yeah, he’s averaging a little more than 5 shots on goal per game), they’re eventually going to go in.
Danis….hmmm…a part of me wants to say he’ll be playing very soon, but I don’t know, really.

Agree with the five listed
But shout-outs to Bergfors, Zubrus and even Pandolfo.
I didn’t expect much from any of them, but all three have, at times, impressed me with their hustle, effort and heart.
What makes me happy the most of this win is beating a quality team, rightfully or wrongfully I judge a teams true quality by who they beat during the season as opposed to just winning games or what players are playing well at that moment or not.
Fair enough. It’s a great sign to see your favorite team knock off one of the most popular or top teams in the league. That said, there aren’t any real pushovers in the NHL and all the wins are worth 2 points anyway.
Still, despite their losing streak going into Monday’s game, knocking off the Caps from behind is something to be proud about. The Devils certainly must be, at least.

i think
any team can beat whatever team at any given game so it doesnt matter if its a good team, we got the wins and points all that, and i really think how marty shut down Ovie in the shootout has got to do wonders on his confidence, bein a goalie is all about confidence, so i wouldnt be suprised to see him play really well goin into the next few games.
Looking at the lines last game, Pandolfo-Nediemayer-Rolston, I would say we have one of the best 3rd lines in the game. With the defense that ZZ Pops and the line of Clarkson-Zubris-Bergfors are playing we will be less concerned with match ups. This will pose a ton of problems for our opponents. Then just think, Elias will be back soon too.
Have to agree there. Rolston’s two-way game fits in perfectly with Niedermayer and Pandolfo’s defensive game. Having the benefit of a 3rd line that can generate some offense and shut down top lines is a big plus, especially once ZZ Pops finds their stride.

Bergfors has been looking better and better with each game. I think the NHL-Shock is wearing off and he’s getting the feel for the level of effort required. By this time in November, he’s going to be getting a lot of notice. Especially if Clarkson and Zubris keep it up and the line is busted with the return of Patty. Then again, Patty only makes the team better, so who knows.
I’ve also been pleasently suprised by Rolston. I didn’t really expect much other than nice black marks on the glass, but he seems to be hitting the net a bit more than he has in previous years. I was actually really sceptical that having him around was a good thing. I was wrong.
Shot still looks as hard as always, but a bit more accurate. I’d like to see him get over whatever grudge he has against the glass and get pissed at the net s’more. There have been plenty of “WTF was he shooting at” moments so far, but there have also been those, “woah, he hit the net and that was a great save” moments too. I’d bet that he’s got at least as many shots on glass as he has on goal.
Been a fun ride so far. Plenty of drama. Close games. Rust is shaking off. I just hate it when the guys lose to the frickin rangers. Meh, there’s plenty of more chances to spank them. Go Devs.
I would like to point out that while the shots against rose when Greene is on the ice, he doesn’t screen Marty like some of our other d-men. He knows when to stand clear and let Marty make the stop. This is different from when he first got into the lineup 2 years ago and kept deflecting pucks into our net by accident.
Greene seems to have two gears, offensive, and defensive. If he can somehow merge the two together he’s going to become one heck of a defenseman.
Your top 5 have definitely been impressive. Like most others Id compliment Bergfors, Zubrus, Pandolfo, and Rolston. I get the sense Bergfors is about to start putting the puck in the net and become a secondary scoring threat. He gets better and better each game, buzzes around in the offensive zone and is starting to shoot more from all over the ice. I think the Devils have done a nice job with him. They’ve brought him along slowly and instead of burying him on the fourth line, gave him a regular spot on the team when he was ready too play 14-15 minutes a night. Rolston, quietly, has put up almost a point a game and just seems to be playing with a lot more confidence.
In the last few games I’ve really liked how aggressive the defensemen have gotten in the offensive zone. Under Sutter the Devils defense starting pinching more and keeping the puck in the offensive zone. Its been quite a long time however, since Ive seen a Devils defense pinch as much as they did the last two games (those last ten minutes vs. Washington in particular). Play in the defensive zone and on the breakout still needs work but I like the increased offensive focus.
