Game #8 of 82 - Devils at New York Rangers

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers, Oct 22, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

TV: MSG Plus 2 for our guys, MSG (HD) for the other side.

Radio: WFAN 660 AM for us, Hell if we know what station the Rangers are on.  1050 sees itself more fit to air a Yankees game that's airing on another station already than air the Rangers.

Preview: Here's Fischer.  Here's Blueshirt Banter's.

Join Fischer in the comments.  I'll be joining in a little late tonight.  keep the comments clean, you keep them on-topic (tangents OK, talking about the Devils/Rangers is OK, but I don't want to turn this into a 80s thrash revival thread Bruce Springsteen lovefest gripefest about why The Hold Steady isn't much, much more popular a Weezer was soooooo much better in the 90's thread), and support the New Jersey Devils.  Meet you on the other side of home.

And the fans actually come alive...

…for a Sean Avery-Mike Mottau fight. Yes, I said Mottau.

So far, the game has been even. Devils with the puck more, but Rangers, I think, have an actual shot on net.

The fourth line drawn a call and then went on to have a pretty good offensive shift with the delayed penalty – no really, the fourth line had possession and shots and such.

Could this be the Devils night? A power play goal would help support this hope!

First Period is Over

I could go in depth or I can go right to the point. I choose the latter.

Best First Period and Best Period performance all season. Defense snuffed the Rangers’ attack, Marty stopped what little he faced, the Devils owned the faceoff dot, and the Devils got two goals! The only miscues was the ineffective power play and Langenbrunner’s giveaway in his own zone.

It’s all Devils hockey now. Can the Devils keep it up?

Devils had the best chance of the period, but Lundqvist denied the long shot by Zubrus; but Kotalik was far up ice, got the puck, went in all alone and got the goal.

It’s like the first period never happened.

To elaborate, the Rangers have really have gotten going early thanks to the early PP goal and their aggressiveness is being rewarded. The Devils have yet to respond with significant offensive pressure outside of some chances on the rush.

Now, momentum is clearly in the Rangers’ favor. Let’s see how the Devils respond further.

Second period

A quick PPG by Gaborik energized the Rangers, they went from strength to strength, the Devils were pinned back more often than they’d like, and Kotalik got the equalizer right after a counter attack.

The solace we can take is that after the equalizer, the Devils looked a bit better in terms of possession on offense. The Devils need to re-focus with their passing (especially IN THEIR OWN ZONE) and pick up the pace in the game.

This is not over.

That whole shift was NUTS A big scrum in front, the Rangers can’t convert, Rolston and Parise on a 2-on-1. The pass from Rolston to Parise was fine, the return, not so much, but somehow the puck got on net and Lundqvist had it (sort of, his teammates on the return poked the puck from behind him).

Devils really need to be careful, this game is FAR from over and they are on the edge of a knife in a sense.

Quick thoughts - recap to come after some victory pie

Rangers outshot NJ 31-25; Rolston led in shots on net for the Devils with 6 (4 of which Lundqvist had to come up huge on, IMO)

Devils win on faceoffs 27-26. Rob Niedermayer led the Devils by going 11/17.

Game winner: Dainius Zubrus
Overall Best Player on the Ice: Zach Parise
Pleasant Surprise: Bergfors’ goal, Johnny Oduya’s FIVE blocked shots

So...

I guess that was Parise’s best game thus far…but from what I heard..one of the TEAM’s best games? Of course minus the fourth line which we keep locked in the basement when company comes over.

yeah, what was with that?

My guess is they just weren’t playing well enough. It was largely defensive with bursts of back and forth both ways, but whenever the Rags got sustained pressure, it seemed like it was against the fourth line.

Can’t be, the fourth line didn’t get even 5 minutes of ice time and some of their shifts were in the Rangers’ zone. They actually did well in the first period, putting up a shot on net after drawing the only Devils power play of the night.

I think Lemaire may have punished them for that awful backpass in the second period that the Devils nearly paid for.

I also would like to know what happened with Mottau. He left sometime during the third period, which is a shame because I felt he honestly played with guts out there.

Yes. He played 18 games with them in 2000-01 and 1 in 2001-02

Game over.. Rags go down.

First I would like to say I was wrong about Marty playing he got it done and finally beat Henrik. Nothing can be more satisfying than a win at the garden.. I think the Devils are playing awesome road hockey eventually the wins will come at home also. Go Devils…
