The New Jersey Devils Beat Boston Bruins 2-1 in a Tight Game, Lose Johnny Oduya to Injury

The New Jersey Devils maintained their perfect record on the road as they defeated the Boston Bruins 2-1 tonight.  While it was a win for the team, the Devils lost Johnny Oduya in the second period to a "lower body injury" shortly after Boston's goal.   For the Boston perspective, please check out Stanley Cup of Chowder.  NHL.com has their recap up and available with links to the boxscore and other stats.

It was the first start for backup goaltender Yann Danis this season and he was sensational.  His positioning was solid, his lateral movement was smooth, and he looked calm and confident in making 31 saves on 32 shots.  And the one that beat him, he had no chance on.  A Zdeno Chara shot was blocked by Oduya, his stick broke, Marco Sturm got the loose puck, fired a blind pass in front, and Patrice Bergeron put it home all alone.  Bad luck all around and that wasn't Danis' fault at all.   You can't ask for much better from any goalie, really.  Great job tonight by Danis.  Were I to name a player of the game, it'd have to be Danis.

In a way, this game is a bit confusing to discuss.  From what I saw, Boston dominated puck possession and had many more shifts where they set themselves up on offense and pinned back the Devils' defense for extended shifts.  Yet, the game itself was sloppy - especially by Boston's attack.  Passes missing their target.  Shots missing the net or firing directly into a skater.  This was "helped" by some poor clearances by the Devils in some cases.  Moreover, the Devils offense was largely based around counter-attacks and they didn't get many offensive shifts in Boston's end until the third period.   So Boston was able to benefit from the same blocks and misses.

Yet, the game ended with 31 shots on net by New Jersey and 32 by Boston.   A quick look at the Event Summary from NHL.com better shows what I'm talking about, as Boston missed the net 17 times and were blocked 10 times. To me, those were just wasted chances for the B's.   It was close, tight game and the Devils came out winners thanks to two Devils crashing the net to put home shots that went through Tim Thomas but not into the net.  Read on further for tonight's recap of the game as I saw it:

Star-divide

Interestingly, the majority of these shots came in the first two periods, Claude Julien and the Bruins didn't fully capitalize on a depleted Devils' defense.  The loss of Oduya - no details on his injury just yet - meant the Devils had to go to 5 defensemen.  Among those 5, only Mark Fraser didn't play more than 20 minutes, just 12:52 of ice time.   Jacques Lemaire went with experience and so Mike Mottau (26:30), Colin White (23:36), Bryce Salvador (24:42), and Andy Greene (22:01) had to play out of their minds.

I'd love to say that was why the Bruins looked so strong in getting the puck in the Devils' zone and keeping it there.  I'd love to say that the defense.  But because it was happening from the start of the game, I really can't.  The Devils were pinned back more often that any fan would have liked to have seen, leading to some very long shifts from the aforementioned four defenders. Thankfully, Danis (and a crossbar in the dying seconds of the game) were more than up to the task.

The Devils' offense looked better in the third period, but until then, they struggled to set-up in Boston's zone.  Lemaire mixed up the lines for tonight's game but actually didn't shift them around too much during the game. The Devils had Dainius Zubrus center Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner and Travis Zajac center Brian Rolston and (wait for it) Ilkka Pikkarainen, who actually looked pretty decent on the line.  I think Lemaire wanted to see if he could handle a larger role. Given that he stayed there all game long, I think Lemaire liked what he saw from Pikkarainen. The only in-game change I noticed was Zajac and Zubrus switching for a few shifts.  It didn't have a significant positive effect for New Jersey, so Lemaire switched them back.

The Devils' fourth line of Andrew Peters, Rod Pelley, and Matt Halischuk actually had a good game of their own with limited minutes.  Not as impressive as, say, Boston's fourth line - which worked real hard tonight - but better than what we've seen recently.  Maybe they are improving?   David Clarkson and Nicklas Bergfors had better nights, and while he went pointless tonight, Travis Zajac led the team with 5 shots.

Still, I would have liked to have seen more consistent pressure on offense.  It would have made the game seem so less, one-sided with the run of play.  Nevertheless, the Devils made a point of it to shoot when they did get the chance and to shoot as hard as they could on Tim Thomas.  And I can't complain too loudly about putting 31 on Thomas.

Thomas, by the way, played well, but he was beaten the same way for both goals and that has to be frustrating.  In the first period, Nicklas Bergfors picked up on an errant Devils pass from their own zone, charged up Thomas' right and fired one at Thomas' 5-hole.  The puck squirted through and David Clarkson put it home with a one-handed effort.   As that was the Devils' opening goal, the game winning goal was scored in a similar way.  Late in the third period, Parise, Zubrus, and Langenbrunner worked real hard to get a cycle going and the following happened:

Zubrus out of nowhere!  And uncovered!  And what a dive over the crease!  A great reward for him and his line for their hard work on that shift. Poor, poor Boston!  After all that possession, all those wasted chances, and the Devils go through the backdoor to pick up the go-ahead goal and eventually the win.

While I would like to see the defense to a much better job in preventing shots and the offense to put on more pressure instead of relying mainly on rushes off turnovers and blocks, I am happy with the win.  It was a tight game, on the road, against a good team who looked like the better team based on the run of play.   Winning those kinds of games is a sign of a team's strength.  It's the first win for Danis, the first win without Paul Martin and Jay Pandolfo, and now the best October record within the last 5 seasons.  Hopefully the Devils can get a little rest, especially the blueliners, in advance of Saturday's game.

As far as Oduya is concerned, Tom Gulitti does have this postgame report where it is stated that his status is unknown.  It does highlight why Oduya left and when the injury actually happened, but nothing on the injury itself or how long he'll be out.   As more information comes out, we'll pass it along.

Thanks to Steve and to all who commented in the GameThread.  Please leave further thoughts, observations, questions, complaints, and compliments about tonight's game in the comments.

I just watched the first two periods.

I couldnt watch till the third. How anyone could find that boring is just unbelivable to me.That was a perfect ice hockey game.Last year i thought the Devils would match up with the B’s well but now with Lemarie im nearly certain this would be a good team to face in a playoff matchup.Defence first will be a tough tough way to beat the Devils.

Sloppy, choppy, but a W's a W.

4th Line showed a lot of jump. Pikka looked good too. Becoming a fan of Andy Greene. Looked confident with the puck and made good quick decisions. Ralston sucks, he can’t do anything well at this point.

If Oduya is out for any time

The Devils could be in huge trouble. Martin and Oduya out? Granted Oduya hasn’t been great this year, but that’s essentially their two best defensemen and key puck movers. The Devs don’t really have anyone else who can move the puck. They would definitely need to make a deal to survive if Oduya’s injury is serious.

A great game to be at.

I had so much fun at the game tonight. I only get to see the Devils when they’re in Boston, and tonight’s game was great. And I snuck into the seats behind the Devils bench, which made the game even better.

Not *that* bad

Definitely was a sloppy game. Lots of passes missed on both sides, and there some extended periods of time that Devs looked like they were just standing around rather than skating. But I guess saking 5 Ds can do that to you.

Reactions:
1. A lucky win is better than a L. The Bruins seemed to work harder last night, but the difference was Danis and TT’s loose pads.
2. Danis looked amazing. Better than Brodie has looked in more than one effort so far this year. Granted, it wasn’t the most offensively talented team in the league, but he looked very, very good. I know one game is kinda early to make the call, but I’d like to see Brodie get a little more rest this year, and I feel good with that now.
3. Bergfors is a machine. He’s getting more and more confident, and playing like his ass is on fire. This kid’s my new fav.
4. Pika was all over the ice last night. I know he hasn’t done much statistically, but last night was the first time I really noticed when he was on the ice. It was refreshing. I’d been starting to think that the Fin was rapidly becoming a bust. I’ll hit the snooze button on that one for now and see what happens.
5. Definitely noticed the D getting tired as the periods rolled along. I’m worried about Johnny’s injury. The guys were huge down the stretch, but by the end of the game, they were playing on empty.

All in all, it’s great to win on the road. Would be nice to win at home too. Worried about the next month and change while the D gets healthy and who’s going to help out back there. I’m excited to see Danis’ next game. If he can slap together another 30+ save night (and some really nice saves), I’d call him one hell of a value addition to the team.

Good times. Go Devs!

OH, and on Johnny...

From the emailed recap, it doesn’t look that serious if he’s talking about possibly playing Saturday.

“Already missing Paul Martin (forearm) and Jay Pandolfo (shoulder), the Devils also played most of Thursday’s game without Oduya. He suffered a lower body injury and did not have a shift after the opening five minutes of the second period.

Oduya wasn’t certain if he would miss any additional playing time, but said it’s a possibility that he’ll play Saturday when the Devils take on Tampa for a 3 p.m. start.

“I have no idea at this point,” he said. “Nothing’s been decided. We’re just going to see whatever the progress is here; what’s going on.” "

Winning without Martin in the lineup would have been a great confidence booster for the team. The fact that it’s a “lower body” injury is kinda bad, because it can be anything from a day-to-day injury or a long term injury. Hopefully Johnny’s alright, I really don’t wanna worry about Injuries especially without Elias and Martin in the lineup

Zubrus

Has really been proving his worth so far this season. He seems to be really hustling this year. He’s not always the most athletic player on the ice but he’s determined, which is a good teammate to players like Parise and Langenbrunner who can provide instant offense. He scored a huge goal tonight in the clutch because of his hard work.

The Devils have really stepped up on the road so far this year. They need to match this effort at home. The Eastern Conference as a whole this year is competitive but does not necessarily have a single team that the Devils couldn’t compete with or beat on a nightly basis.

Shades of Rafalski? Bergie thoughts. Clarkie the sleeping bear.

It might be too early to say, but just seeing Andy Greene flying up and down the ice and putting some good shots on net brings to mind a former Devil hero Rafalski. Have to admit, I didn’t like how he is another small D man, but if he keeps playing like this, then good things will happen for our team.

Bergfors is really impressing me. He’s kind of like a young Parise/Elias hybrid. Was only a few years ago that we got to see Parise develop before our eyes into a star and at least for now, we can enjoy watching a similar thing happen with Bergie.

Lastly, something happened between Tim Thomas and Clarkie last night that brought out Clarkie’s snarl in the 3rd. Shortly after a break away, Clarkie seemed to get in Tim Thomas’s head. Moments later Zubie scored the game winner. It’s these x-factors that teams won’t be able to prepare for (or even expect) and will make our team a force.

Go Devils!

Clarkson posts...

Well I was limited to the radio broadcast yesterday but here were a few of my last posts during the game thread…really love Clarkson’s balance so far this season of grit and skill.

Ha…

They had mentioned a few minutes ago Clarkson’s shot had hit Thomas in the mask..which he removed and said something to Clarkson. Now he just hit him again with chaos insuing? You have to love that David Clarkson…

Hard to tell by the radio…

but it really sounded like Clarkson’s play got the momentum going for the team in the last few minutes.

Well Said, Devil_Hard_Core

On a few different aspects. Greene has stepped up his game in a big way so far this year. I’m hesitant to compare him to Rafalski just yet, who was one of the fatest defensemen we had as well as a great setup man for this team. But I like where Greene’s going so far this year. He has plenty of potential.

Bergors is starting to definitely into a fine young talent as well. Truly a treat to watch this man develop into a capable player in this league. I would be just as interested seeing who he matches up with on an extended basis towards the later stages of the season.

Danis was GREAT!

I was lovin the way Yann danis was playing. He played great and im kinding hoping he starts against tampa hes hot rite now and tampa would be a good test for a more offensive attack. love bergfors too he works his ass of i agree with that elias/parise hybrid thing someone compared him to. Hes gonna be the next star of the devils if he stays with us in the next years. Sucks to lose Oduya but i think Murphy can cover his job if he plays great. I like the team this year once elias comes back and we get pando and martin and oduya will be set with a pretty deep team.
