Game #12 of 82 - Devils at Tampa Bay Lightning

New Jersey Devils at Tampa Bay Lightning, Oct 31, 2009 3:00 PM EDT

Last Meeting Betwen These Two: Zajac scores magical goal to tie game with less than a second left, Devils save themselves from potential early season landslide with a shootout win.

TV: MSG Plus (HD)

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Scroll for Fischer, and for the Bolts, check out Raw Charge.

Springsteen Saturdays: While typically, our game threads will feature a song to pump you up and make you think about the game tonight, Saturdays we will devote to our beloved Boss.  Because we're all Devils fans here, how can we be more Jersey?

NOTE: If you'd like to submit a future Springsteen Saturday or Song to Get You Pumped Up, e-mail me at SMLepore@comcast.net.

For this matinee hockey matchup, what could be more appropriate than "Thunder Road"?

So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

Join me and Fischer in the comments.  As our constant reminder goes:  Keep the comments clean, you keep them on-topic (tangents OK, talking about the Devils/Lightning is OK, but I don't want to turn this into a "I can't believe he was cheesy enough to use a Boston song for this" thread), and support the New Jersey Devils.

Per Gulitti

Leblond is in for Halischuk. Zajac is back with Parise and Langenbrunner; Zubrus is centering Bergfors and Pikkarainen; Niedermayer between Rolston and Clarkson; Andy Greene is paired with Bryce Salvador; and so Cory Murphy is paired with Mark Fraser.

Oops, I got it wrong. Thanks.

Parise caught slashing on the forecheck. Dumb move, Zach; they always call the stick to the hands. Especially if you do it TWICE.

Former Devils coach Pat Burns, who still serves as a special assignment coach for the team and scouts most of the Lightning home games, is here today. Burns, who is battling lung cancer, didn’t want to saying anything about his health to the media, but when I told him that fans ask about him a lot, he said, "Tell them I’m doing fine."

Devils kill the penalty. Not a lot of clearances, but the Lightning couldn’t get a clear shot on net – maybe one at the most?

I guess I have only two questions:

1) Can the Devils’ defense continue to prevent Tampa Bay from getting clear shots on net?

2) Can the Devils beat Nittymaki? Surely, high and glove side is not an option.

From the limited ice time of Fraser the last 2 games, he’s shown he can throw some hits. He decked someone in front of the net last game. Drilled someone into the boards behind the net today. If only stevens can teach him the art of the open ice hit.

by Shakey on Oct 31, 2009 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

That’s his style – he’s a tough, defensive-minded defenseman. Learning from Stevens would definitely help. I wish Larry Robinson was also about to help him as well.

I’m not sure how much upside he has, but given that he’s still up with NJ even prior to the injuries, he’s doing well enough.

Just shows him as trying to do too much.

Zubrus a big slapper stopped by Nittymaki. Nittymaki may yet steal the Lightning a point today.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully the Devils will realize it’s Antero freaking Nittymakki in net, a goalie they’ve chased more than once when he played with the Flyers.

I got to get going. Steve – carry the action!

Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!

Bergfors a chance cut off at the side of the net.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

Rollie, please, do something. Anything.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

Why was the 4th line not good enough to play most of the game but now getting a regular shift in the final 15 minutes?

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

You get the sense, for the first time today, that the Lightning have a shot.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

Hey, did you guys hear?

America’s favorite weatherman is now on the Weather Channel.

Zajac a shot deflected wide, and then Parise just misses.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Malone-Stamkos-St. Louis get a few chances and Marty has to cover.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

BIG GLOVE SAVE Brodeur on Kurtis Foster.

Devils having trouble with the Lightning forecheck.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

They look tired. Probably why Lemaire was trying to fit some fourth liners out there.

by elesias on Oct 31, 2009 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

The Lightning have absolutely been better in this 3rd period. 3:15 to go.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

Big save Nittymaki on a point blank shot from Parise in the slot.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

Clarkon a long range wrister that gets stopped.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

Mottau a slapper from the point that Nittymaki gets a glove on.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

I think Chico is watching the wrong game.

by pepe22 on Oct 31, 2009 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

This is a disappointing result after how poorly the Lightning were in the 1st 2 periods. But a point on the road is a point on the road, let’s go get the 2nd in the OT/Shootout.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:36 PM EDT reply actions

At least a point, but this game should have been over. Nittymakki was good, but not so good that they shouldn’t be up by a goal or two.

by elesias on Oct 31, 2009 5:36 PM EDT reply actions

Is Chico talking about shootouts in 85?

by elesias on Oct 31, 2009 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

Parise-Zajac-Murphy-Mottau for the Devils vs. Stamkos-St. Louis

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

Hedman also out for the Lightning, Devils change for Langs and Nieds. Marty denies Stamkos on a ripper.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Lecavalier out for the Bolts, same forwards for NJ.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Langs sets up Nieds perfectly, but Nittymaki stops him.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Bergfors-Zubes for the Devs.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

Stamkos a shot that handcuffs Marty.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

Lecavalier a mild wrist shot that’s gloved high by Marty.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

Rolston a ripper off a Lightning stick that goes… guess what? Into the mesh.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

Zajac a shot wide, Parise nearly puts home rebound. Then Marty denies St. Louis on an outside shot…

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:44 PM EDT reply actions

OT was a little too conservative for my tastes.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:44 PM EDT reply actions

Meszaros will shoot first for TB. Lecavalier and St. Louis NOT in the Bolts first 3. Halpern and Stamkos for TB. Parise, Langs, Travis for NJ.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

Zach went to the backhand, but couldn’t get it past the glove.

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

Georgeous backhand by Clarkson blocker side of Nittymaki and the Devils have won 7 straight road games to start the year!

by Steve Lepore on Oct 31, 2009 5:52 PM EDT reply actions
