Championship Plaza & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Pictures
Yesterday wasn't just the opening of the 2009-10 regular season for the New Jersey Devils. It was also the official opening of Championship Plaza. When the Prudential Center opened two years ago, there was a big empty space just outside of the PNC Tower. The Devils and the City of Newark - specifically the Newark Downtown Core Redevelopment Team - have since been working together to get the surrounding area developed such that it's not just an arena surrounded by old buildings. Since then, there are some new places to go around the arena (e.g. Brick City Bar & Gril; Brick City Coffee) and the Devils have redeveloped that big empty space to something they called Championship Plaza.
So at 2 PM, a press conference was held prior to the official Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the plaza. It was raining prior, but almost on cue, the rain stopped, and the sky cleared up later on. Among those who spoke included the Devils owners, Jeff Vanderbeek and Mike Gilfillan; as well as Bill Crowley, statue artist Jon Krawczyk, and Newark mayor (showing up fashionably late) Cory Booker.

There wasn't a whole lot that was notable said outside of statements thanking those who made it happen, how this is a continued sign of progress, and so forth. Gilfillan did share an amusing anecdote about how the sculpted rock that now sits in front of the plaza literally came at midnight that morning and how it was fully installed at 4:30 AM. And a fan popped a balloon accidentally while Booker was speaking (and right in front of me!), leading to a quick quip from the mayor about how she could be banned from Newark International Airport like a certain talk show host. It was a bit clever, honestly.
As far as the Plaza itself goes, it's still a largely empty space. But instead of painted blacktop, it looks like, well, a plaza. The ground is now made of bricks, including a giant Devils logo in the center with the fan-purchased bricks sitting below with their phrases (including a marriage proposal).

There are three other landmarks at the plaza. First, the giant Championship Plaza banner. I have no idea if was up for just yesterday. But it definitely made it clear what the place was called.

Second, the giant hockey player metallic statue sculpted by Devils fan and artist Jon Krawczyk, seen here in front of the statue. During the press conference he claims that the stick is facing in the direction of "some other team's arena across the river." I wonder who that could be and whether the Devils will play them on Monday?

Here's a fuller version of the statue with the Gateway Center in the background. I personally think this is a fantastic landmark for people to meet up.

Incidentally, Cory Booker noted that the statue has no nickname for it yet. Booker suggested the "Iceman Cometh" or somesuch. I would personally suggest Scotty Steel-vens. Feel free to come up with a much better suggestion in the comments.
Finally, the third landmark is the scuplted rock itself. The rock outside The Rock has a plaque both on the rock and the platform itself.

It's a nice and fitting touch, and not a bad advertisement of the arena's connection with Prudential. An executive from Prudential also spoke, but the name unfortunately escapes me. Another fitting touch are that all of the Devils' accomplishments as a franchise were carved into special stones in the ground. This includes all of their division and conference championships as well as their three Stanley Cup wins. Hence, it is truly Championship Plaza. Here's the 2003 Stanley Cup commemorative stone.

Of course, we'd love to see the fourth Stanley Cup come to the new plaza as soon as possible. Last night's results notwithstanding.
Truth be told, the renovations to make Championship Plaza really makes the area outside of the PNC Tower look much better. OK, it doesn't seem like much, but there really wasn't anything there before hand. Now there's landmarks to hang out at, there's ample space for "FanFests" when the Devils want to hold them (as they did yesterday afternoon), and aesthetically I think it just looks so much better than a dreary, blacktop area. Fitting for the Brick City. Now the Devils and the Newark Downtown Core Redevelopment team can work on the future projects to bring in more retail and to further develop the area.

if the statue was to be called ‘scotty steel-vens’, there would have to be a body outline on the ground. or another ‘iceman’ getting caught with his head down.
i love that idea. we could have Iron Lindros re-creating the famous “i’m unconscious” pose

If I was smart, I should have asked a Flyers fan to do that…assuming anyone would agree to that.

Moving to slow
Although most of us predominantly care about the on ice product, the success of our franchis depends on the success of the Rock, and the area surrounding our arena.
I love the new arena, and the Brick City Bar and Grille is great ( although it is much to small to handle the pregame load) After that though there isnt alot to be happy about. The new plaza looks nice, but if i was building a multimillion dollar arena I would have made sure that plaza was done before I opened my new palace and had fans walking about the broken beer bottles and debris.
This is a total off hockey topic, but here is the reason why people dont make the trip to our arena……ITS A DISASTER AROUND THE ARENA!!!!!
The Newark Police do an exceptional job, and i am not complaining about the safety in ANY way, but walk down Edison place to/or from The train station and count the rat traps and debris in the parking lots! Necessary yes, need to be exposed? NO.
I tend to walk up Edison Place after the game, cross McCarter, and use the street where the taxis park to get back to the station. WHAT IS WITH ALL THE HOMELESS PEOPLE SLEEPING ON CARDBOARD., This is not a commentary on the homeless, Newark should help them if they can and find them appropriate housing, but do I want to walk wth my three children past this? I THINK NOT.
Next topic- Edison Place. The Plaza is done, the Brick City is beautiful, GET SOMETHING DONE WITH THE REST OF IT. We are on year 3 of our new arena, and the surrounding area development had been much to slow. I get it that the economy has slowed, but the concerts and games at OUR arena require, NO DEMAND, that we have the amenities and cleanliness that we are proud to bring our friends and family to.
It’s not that totally off topic, it has to do with the venue. And I’m somewhat familiar with that part going back to Penn Station.
I’m honestly not sure what the next project is, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that area is next after they further develop the surrounding areas to the Rock itself (like the direct block over).

I just wish one of those Portuguese steak houses were closer to the Arena. Delicious. If one opens within 2 blocks of the Arena I would have no complaints…. There isn’t one in close proximity now, is there?

Not really. The Portuguese area is on the other side of Penn Station. You can find everything you’re looking for right on Ferry Street, which is only a few blocks away from The Rock. As for those who complained about the surrounding area…be patient. A lot has been done in the past 2 years, even with the recession. One step at a time. You can’t fix a half century’s worth of decay in 2 years but I think they’ve done an amazing job thus far. Just be patient. However, in the meantime, if you want to go to a nicer area for food and drinks just go to the Ironbound section right past Penn Station. There’s a great bar/lounge called Hell’s Kitchen on Lafayette and Bruen. And, as I stated above, Ferry Street has it all from top to bottom. They are renovating the sidewalks, streets, etc at the moment so you’re better off walking and don’t worry, it’s safe. Best area in the city.
Oh, about the Brick City Bar & Grill, they are expanding it from what I’ve been told. They are currently working on making a second floor so there will be more than enough room for pre/post game drinks/food. There’s also Arena Lounge a block away from The Rock, right on Mulberry. Very nice place. Plenty of options, I’d say.

What I'm talking about should be fixed now
I’m not talking about major renovations and big dollar projects. I’m talking about fundamental quality of life issues that help form peoples opinions when they visit our arena.
It doesnt take a lot of money to clean up the broken glass and garbage on the streets between the arena and the train station. The Rat traps dont look like they have had any attention in years, and really don’t need to be exposed as they are.
AND THERE IS NO EXCUSE for the six people sleeping on cardboard boxs along the train station wall. My experience is that alot of these homeless people dont want help, which is fine if thats what they choose, but they dont have to be sleeping on the ground a block away from our Billion dollar arena. There are plenty of social agencies to help them IF thats what they want, and if not they should be moved.
Fair point
I do agree with Newark Devil that a lot of this changes over time.
But pepe’s right in that some of this really falls on Sanitation (it would be Sanitation, would it?) to put additional effort in just cleaning up the area from Penn station to the Rock. And not just that, but it’s also the area between Penn Station and Gateway, Prudential, City Hall, etc. It’s usually the first area visitors via train see when they exit Penn.
