Bergfors Quietly Sneaking Into Calder Race?
Bergfors now has 12pts in 17 games which is good for 5th in rookie scoring. He started the season rather quietly with just 2pts in his first seven games, but he's been pretty instrumental as one of the better players on the ice during this winning streak.
Knowing the way most media sources tend to ignore what goes on over in Jersey (I still see a bunch of lazy reporters using "The Trap" to describe why NJ has the best defense in the league)... So how long before Bergfors officially enters the Calder equation for those who aren't Devils fans?
He keeps up and he's on pace for a 60pt season... anyone here think he can sustain it? Clarkson's been getting most of the attention as the team's breakout player, but I've really been impressed by Bergfors for weeks now (well Greene also)

I absolutely think he can sustain it.
Lemaire has no qualms about changing up lines and he seems to play well no matter which line he’s on. Regardless of whether or not he sticks up on the first line with Parise and Zajac, or gets moved down to the second line with Elias to give the top line some breathing room when teams key in on them, he’s dynamic, got some nifty moves in traffic and a nice shot, and is a bulldog on the puck along the boards.
Whether or not that is enough to get him noticed for the Calder is another story. I think they tend to look for the flashy, sexy candidates over the blue-collar workhorse. And though I think the Devils often get overlooked in the mainstream media, they do have two past Calder winners (and Barret Jackman did beat out Zetterberg not so long ago), so there is some hope.
i watched that on the fly thingy on nhl network
and they talked about him alot as calder canidate.every one will know him soon just like gomez in 99/00.

i love nhl on the fly
it’s basically an entire sportscenter devoted to hockey. too bad my cable provider got rid of nhl network 2 weeks into the season— just long enough for me to get hooked
I’m not so certain Bergfors can keep up his pace. I’d love it if he did, but you can tell he still has some work to do on his overall game and scoring on this team as a whole hasn’t been as consistent as I’d like.
Right now, though, I do agree that Bergfors should be in the conversation for best rookies so far this season.

60 points would be an amazing rookie season, admittedly, but I think he can do it due largely to benefiting from teams having to respect Parise and Zajac and Elias already and just not having enough guys to cover everyone.
And, ss noted over at Pensburgh, he’s got 5 points in two games vs. the Penguins… and he’s still got four more to go :P
No question he has work to do and he also makes some really stupid mental lapses. However what he does do really well that makes me think he can get 60pts is attack with tenacity. He sometimes just reallyw ant’s that goal or a score and it’s almost willed in.
Also I really feel if he keeps seeing time on either PP units and shuffles between the playing with Parise, Zajac and Elias as the season goes on he’s going to pick up points almost as an afterthought.
Even when he wasn’t producing points, he was on the second unit. With the way he’s playing as well as the Devils’, er, forwards available for the power play, I can definitely see Bergfors as a PP mainstay throughout the season, all things being equal.
I do disagree in part, however. I’ll make a point of it to avoid Bergfors’ production as an afterthought. His growth will be known.
