Game #19 - Devils at Philadelphia Flyers

New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers, Nov 16, 2009 7:00 PM EST

TV: VERSUS (HD), with Doc, Eddie Olczyk and Bob Harwood.  Look out for special guest Peter Laviolette on Hockey Central.

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Scroll for Fischer's, and check out the Flyers coverage at Broad Street Hockey, which features some great stuff on Dave Schultz, who's being honored by Philly tonight.

Song to Get You Pumped Up But Also Make You Think Deeply About Tonight's Game: Jack's Mannequin, "Spinning".  Fantastic piano-rock band that not enough people know the inspiring story of.  Sound familiar?

Join us in the comments.  As always:  Keep the comments clean, you keep them on-topic (tangents OK, talking about the Devils/Flyers is OK, but I don't want to turn this into a piano-rock thread), and support the New Jersey Devils.  Be patient, we're getting to the point.

I would recommend going somewhere to see it – it’s more fun that way. Me? I’m going audio tonight. This should make the recap…interesting.

Just back from Toronto....

Was there on vacation…and present for the entire Hall of Fame weekend activities. What a great city…if you guys haven’t had the chance get up there for a game and take in the Hockey Hall of Fame. It really is a must see for any true hockey lover…the Hall is set up really well and the admission is very reasonable.

The devils

somehow need to get that “swagger” back they had for so many years when they faced the flyers. They always had so much confidence going into these games…which seems lacking so far in these 1.5 meetings.

by HELLAWAITS on Nov 16, 2009 7:58 PM EST reply actions

It seems

like they’re struggling with how physical the Flyers are. They are yet to respond to it.

by Mandmeisterx on Nov 16, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe? What obscures this is the fact that A) the Devils did get some decent chances on Emery and B) the Devils have constantly started off these games from behind on this winning streak.

In a way, I want to agree; yet based on recent performance, the best is yet to come.

Salvador had the clear and Marty tries to do too much. Hands it right to van Riemsdyk.

by elesias on Nov 16, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Really tough as Marty has been the solitary reason it wasn’t a Flyers blowout in the game up until then.

Agreed

But he’s also had a hand in all the Flyers goals.

by elesias on Nov 16, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. Marty has been over playing alot tonight. but his saves are the only thing preventing a blow out

by pepe22 on Nov 16, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

that was martys fault

by pepe22 on Nov 16, 2009 9:21 PM EST reply actions

That hurts to see

Van Riemsdyk in the orange and black as he is from New Jersey…but he really is quite the talent nonetheless.

by HELLAWAITS on Nov 16, 2009 9:23 PM EST reply actions

Have the Devils had a shot on goal yet?

Based on the above comment – not at this rate.

Devils on the PP?

Can the Devils salvage something? They’ll need to do it soon.

PP to NJ for… something. Versus doesn’t feel we should know.

by elesias on Nov 16, 2009 9:27 PM EST reply actions

They seem to be a little off tonight

by fearloathing13 on Nov 16, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

Short of a quick miracle, you may be right. Poor passing, poor shooting, poor defending, and an inability to adjust isn’t going to lead to victory.

Maybe a bad game from NJ was “due.” Wish it came against, say, Nashville instead of a rival.

It’s the Versus curse.

Give the Flyers credit. Emery played well and they blocked a ton of shots. They’ve kept ZZ Question Mark quiet and took advantage of the Devils having a poor showing.

by elesias on Nov 16, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Story of the game

Devil gets tripped, no call; fight for possession; Flyers block a shot; Devils fight for possession again; brilliant conception of a pass into the slot to an open man and he whiffs.

by elesias on Nov 16, 2009 9:30 PM EST reply actions

I guess we cant complain. they have had a great run

by pepe22 on Nov 16, 2009 9:30 PM EST reply actions

This isn’t my Buffalo Bills. I won’t quit until the final horn. They have been known to pull one out in the nick of time.

by fearloathing13 on Nov 16, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

True but again, at this rate and with a little more than 3 minutes, it’s really, REALLY hard to see this happening.

Indeed...

and I really like what Lemaire had to say before the game about not getting caught up in the hype of the road win record and how no one will remember such facts once the playoffs start or end.

Turn overs galore tonight

by pepe22 on Nov 16, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions

Here’s a fun number: 26

That’s how many Devils’ shots were blocked tonight – and the game ain’t over yet.

Suprising number: 0

The number of fights in a Devils/Flyers game.

by elesias on Nov 16, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Here's a number

3

The number of enforcers the Devils have that don’t fight.

by Mandmeisterx on Nov 16, 2009 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think fighting would have solved the Devils’ problems tonight.

Can't hurt to try and spark them.

If they don’t fight, what’s the point of having 3 of them on your roster?

by Mandmeisterx on Nov 16, 2009 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Fair point. Though 2 of them weren’t playing.

Someone, don’t remember who, tried to get something going with Carcillo when they were down 2-0, but the Flyers smartly wouldn’t go.

I don’t know that a fight would have changed anything either, I just found it surprising that there were no fights as these two teams getting together is almost always good for at least one… and with them indicting inducting Schultz, one would think the stage would have been set.

Maybe next game

they will start Brian Boucher for old times sake.

And we’re done. It was nice to win 9 in a row on the road, but the record not meant to be. See you in Nashville, and hope for a better effort. I get a sense they will.

Time to attempt a recap. Thanks all for joining in and commenting. Now that the Devils lost, the next game will be a good test to see how they’ll respond. I think they’ll do well, but that’s just me.

Philly has

the depth and confidence that they have lacked in years. Will be tough to overcome them head to head or for the overall Atlantic title this season.

by HELLAWAITS on Nov 16, 2009 9:44 PM EST reply actions

Maybe. But you can argue that was the case last season and they got bounced out of the first round too.

Let’s see how well this team is playing by February. After all, they’re still tied with the Islanders as of tonight. They deserved to win tonight, but let’s not crown them yet.
