AHL Player of the Week Tyler Eckford Called Up; Cory Murphy Sent Down

Eckford_headshot_medium

This is certainly an interesting move.  The injuries to the Devils have offered us a chance to see the organization to experiment with youth in a big way for the first time in a long time.  That continues with the Devils calling 24-year old defenseman Tyler Eckford up from Lowell (AHL).

Tom Gulitti has thoughts from GM Lou Lamoriello:

"He's playing extremely well, so we're going to take a look at him," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "He'll come in and practice with us today and then it will be a coach's decision (whether he plays Thursday)."

Eckford has 5 goals and 10 assists on the season, pretty solid numbers for a defenseman.  I always liked watching him in pre-season games and scrimmages I've checked out at The Rock.  This will be a chance for the 2nd round pick from 2004 to play his first NHL game, as Murphy's being sent down means that either he or Matt Corrente will play their first NHL game this Thursday in Nashville.

I would really love to see both of these guys get a chance. I was very surprised to see how much Eckford exploded offensively down on the farm. Maybe this is his time. Zharkov is doing really well too, if he isn’t ready yet, he will be soon.

Why Murphy was sent down

I think why Murphy was sent down is pretty clear in how little ice time he has received. Here’s his time on ice in the past 5 games:

10:45, 7:42, 12:39, 10:37, 8:26.

For a third-pairing defenseman, that’s incredibly limited ice time. From that standpoint, if the #6 defenseman is going to see such little ice time, why not call up a prospect like Eckford or Corrente and see how he does for a few games? Unless he’s abysmal, he’s not going to dramatically hurt the team in a game.

It’s clear to me that Lemaire and the coaching staff are not at comfortable with how Murphy has played with limited minutes. It’s unfortunate that Murphy hasn’t played better and made a case for more ice time. Yet, I can’t say that he got a raw deal in being sent down.

Just for a fun contrast, here is Mark Fraser’s ice time in the last 5 games:

15:12, 12:30, 14:08, 13:26, 12:00

Still lower than what I’d expect from a third pairing defender, but it’s considerably more time than Murphy – proof that the coaches are comfortable with his game. Given that he used to get as little time as Murphy did, his increased minutes is also a sign of improvement from Fraser and being rewarded for it. Maybe the Devils will have lightning strike again with another Lowell defender like Eckford or Corrente.

Playing time aside...

I haven’t liked Murphy since I watched him put himself out of position against Evander Kane in the Thrashers game giving him a 1-0 against Brodeur to score a goal. I’ve seen Murphy out of position a few other times as well.

Fraser meanwhile has looked like he’s got a lot of promise and has played pretty well so far. He keeps his head up and I don’t remember seeing him put himself out of position or let an opponent blow by him in the neutral zone.

I don't like what I've seen from Murphy either

Not that I’m any expert, but his modicum of offensive talent does not nearly make up for his defensive deficiencies. Plus, he’s tiny and gets pushed out of the way too easily down low. I say throw the kids out there and see what happens, we’ve been doing just fine with the kids in there so far, haven’t we?

new players

it is encouraging to see that so far this season, whether by design (bergfors) or necessity (halischuk, fraser and hopefully eckford/corrente) the young players have played without anyobvious dropoff in quality of play for the team
