Devils All-Time Leading Scorer Patrik Elias Returns to Practice
Don't you love it when you wake up and hear good news? Yesterday, we assumed that Matt Halischuk's demotion to Lowell (By the way, don't you love how our hockey team values guys like Peters, Leblond and Pikkarainen over a kid like Halischuk, apparently?) meant that someting was up with regards to our club's former captain and all-time leading scorer. Today is the day that Elias has returned to the team's practices, after missing all of training camp and the first month of the season.
We usually quote Tom Gulliti on things like this, but it's high time Rich Chere got his turn, so here's some details about who Patty's skating wtih:
Elias underwent arthroscopic groin surgery Sept. 15 and missed all of training camp. He originally had hip and groin surgery June 12 in Colorado.
Coach Jacques Lemaire had Elias at left wing on the same line with center Travis Zajac and right winger David Clarkson.
So this is great news for the Devils. One would have to assume that the latest we'll see Patty play is Friday or Saturday, if he doesn't play Wednesday vs. the Capitals. All in all, today is a positive one for our team moving forward, after losing quite a few guys to injuries. Gaining one big one back helps.

Well at least we know...
he can pay his doctor bills with the money we are paying him. All kidding aside…the sooner he is back isn’t necessarily the better. With an injury (operation) like this it’s better for him to take longer than just push it and re-injure himself. Not to mention the Devils once again are finding ways to win (on the road) with the current anemic line up. I say anemic (injuries aside) because I still think the fourth line situation is a disaster. They have been somewhat better but I foresee them being outplayed by a majority of other teams fourth units.

I thinks its completely the opposite. They value Halischuk and his potential, he’ll get way more minutes playing on the top two lines in Lowell than on the 4th line in NJ. I think this is the reasoning behind the move. As an example of this look at Bergfors this year – he’s clearly ready for the NHL and for a lot of minutes and based on his cameos the last few seasons I don’t think that was the case before this season.
For Halischuk as far as the Devils are concerned, it’s mission accomplished. He got to cut his teeth a little more in the big league which will pay dividends but not until next year or until another injury. He will be back. I like this kid but he needs a little more time.
And about the return of Elias from injury, all I can say is, YESSS!

I think Elias should take as much time as needed to get back into form. It doesn’t make sense to give him limited minutes or stick him on a fourth line for a game or two; where other teams will, well, also throw out their fourth lines and battle Elias. I think next week may be more likely.
By the way, don’t you love how our hockey team values guys like Peters, Leblond and Pikkarainen over a kid like Halischuk, apparently?)
I really don’t think that’s a true statement for the reasons drhgzang brought up. Lemaire has shown that his fourth line is an “energy line” and Halischuk doesn’t suit that role well. He was bound to go down to Lowell when Elias returns because he won’t have to pass through waivers, whereas the other three do with their NHL contracts.
Moreover, per CapGeek, Halischuk’s NHL salary would have been $587,000 had he stay up the whole season. Which is more than the $500,000 NHL minimum salaries that Peters and Pikkarainen signed and the $525,000 salary Leblond’s getting. So…technically, the Devils do value Halischuk more – he just needs to make it in NJ first. :)
