Game #21 - Devils at Dallas Stars

New Jersey Devils at Dallas Stars, Nov 21, 2009 8:00 PM EST

TV: MSG Plus 2

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Scroll down for Fischer's, and check out the fantastic Brad at Defending Big D's for the Stars.

Springsteen Saturdays: While typically, our game threads will feature a song to pump you up and make you think about the game tonight, Saturdays we will devote to our beloved Boss.  Because we're all Devils fans here, how can we be more Jersey?

Couldn't think of anything else, so here's "A Night with The Jersey Devil".

Note from the Editor: I can think of something else that isn't Bruce Springsteen: "Re-Animator" by Dallas-based thrashers Rigor Mortis.  I thought about D.R.I., but they're from Houston, which has no NHL team.

Join us both in the comments.  As always:  Keep the comments clean, you keep them on-topic (tangents OK, talking about the Devils/Stars is OK, but I don't want to turn this into a Springsteen Lovefest), and support the New Jersey Devils

Ribiero scores on the rebound

Dallas converts on the PP 2-1.

Ribiero snuck in on the back door because he went around the net. Rebound went right to him.

How? Ribiero went from behind the net and showed up just after the save. He was on Danis’ flank. Short of miraculously throwing his body that way just after the save, that doesn’t get stopped by anyone.

It’s called a hard slap shot from the point. There’s only so much you can control on a shot like that (from Robidas, IIRC)

First period is over:

The opening was good; but the Stars hit back and the Devils struggled to recover. Special teams has been huge; it’s been working for the Stars and not so much for the Devils.

Honestly, I don’t blame Danis for the goals against; but the PK units were exposed on the two power play goals against. It also doesn’t help that the penalties that led to those goals were just stupid calls.

The Devils have come back from 2 down before, but they really need to simplify their breakouts and their passes and start winning shifts instead of letting it become a back-and-forth with Dallas. The Devils have done some of that late in the period and if it keeps up, then they could get more.

But the Devils really can’t afford one more against.

Second Period over…

PK and the goal post came up huge; but the big story was the Devils getting one back on the PP. Brian Rolston is having a great game and scored his second goal. Since the goal, the Devils are pressing further up and they’re getting closer to getting a big equalizer. From the way things are going, the Devils have some momentum and, more importantly, confidence they can complete this comeback.

That’s game.

The Devils did well to tie it up at 3, but they got shellshocked on the Wardell goal and Robidas nailed the coffin shut.

What is there to blame? The Devils giving up 3 in the first period? The Devils not responding well after the Stars’ fourth goal? It wasn’t as if the Devils played very poorly, but they needed to be excellent, they didn’t come close to being that until the second period and in the third, that was inconsistent. Especially on defense (seriously, no one to spy Robidas, Lemaire? He had 1 G, 2 A in the first period, you knew he was hot – ensure he doesn’t get it!)

Winless in 3 and now the Devils have 3 days to think about it. And to get some rest. Recap is upcoming.
