Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

Jay Leach has been claimed by Montreal through re-entry waivers. The Devils' salary cap will still include half of his salary; according to CapGeek, that is $243,750.

This hurts the Devils overall depth on defense as it's one less defender to call up in case of injury. The rest of the blueliners outside of Rob Davidson aren't experienced all that much with the NHL. Is it a major loss? Not really. The cap hit is minimal and as the injuries have shown, he was ultimately 9th on the team's depth chart for defenseman.

Kind of a bummer. I liked Leach.

I know it’s perfectly along the rules to pick up someone on re-entry and happens on occasion, but I thought it was a bit of a courtesy that teams didn’t because it can be interpreted as an EFF YOU to the team losing the player.

I don’t think it’s that big of a courtesy? Usually, the players being re-called are fringe players.

I’m honestly not sure why Montreal felt they needed Leach?

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Montreal must REALLY like the Devils… at this rate half their team will be recent Devils.

Additional news

Maybe I’ll put this in a separate fanshot?

Gulitti: Devils sign Dean McAmmond to a NHL two-way contract, he’ll join the team on Saturday.

Rob Niedermayer and Johnny Oduya were placed on IR. Oduya can be activated at any time; but Niedermayer won’t be eligible to be activated until next Saturday’s game against the Capitals due to the IR’s 7-day limit.

Update: Lou says McAmmond is battling a cold and won’t join the team for either game this weekend.
