Dion Phaneuf Trade Rumors

Does anybody think there is any validity to the recent Dion Phaneuf trade rumors? According to ESPN.com and hockeybuzz.com, the Devils and Islanders are both in hot pursuit of Phaneuf. The source claims that the asking price would be a current NHL defenseman, a prospect, and two first round picks. It's an expensive fee to pay, but Phaneuf is only 24 years old, we haven't seen anybody with the type of hitting ability that Phaneuf possesses since #4 retired, and who knows, this guy could be the second coming. Anybody else here excited at the possibility of this coming to fruition? Our offense has been pretty strong, regardless of who's in the lineup, and we lack that intimidation factor we had when Stevens was patrolling the D line. Besides, Phaneuf has a passionate hate for Sean Avery, one thing he shares with every Devils player and fan, and there is nothing more I would love to see than Dion Phaneuf knocking avery clean on his ass. Let me know what you think...

I wouldnt put much stock in it, ESPNs hockey coverage is fairly weak. Id prefer Niedermayer, Phaneuf isn’t really that good defensively and Ive gotten the sense from reading Matchsticks and Gasoline (the Flames blog) that his play has stagnated and he’s 3rd or 4th on the Flames depth chart.

I’m going with Niedermayer as well, but in reality I’d prefer none of the above, at least for now. I think we’d have to give up too much to get any of them, and that would upset team chemistry, but if it was inevitable we’d get one of them, at least you know Niedermayer is also a good team guy and a former Devil.

Completely agree, either of them or Kovalchuk (who we really dont need) would cost way too much.

Take anything from Eklund with a HUGE grain of salt. Or an aspirin. There’s a site out there that shows his rumors are actually less reliable than picking names out of a hat.

As to Phaneuf, I’ve never been impressed. He hits big, but doesn’t seem to do much else. He’s one of those guys who gains fame (notoriety?) for his hits and so is considered a “big name” defenseman, but I’d much rather have the “no name” ones we have who get the job done.

Besides, Calgary is probably feeling pretty good about themselves. I don’t particularly follow them so I can’t say for sure, but I can’t imagine they feel they need to trade right now.

I voted for Kovalchuk because I’d love to see him in a Devils sweater, but that’s purely in the spirit of the question… I have no delusions that it would ever happen, nor do I think it’d be worth giving up what the team would have to to get him.

Avery

I’m a Devils fan and i don’t hate Avery. Avery has been one of the most interesting things to happen to the NHL this past decade… i’d be sad if he was gone.

Can't stand Avery

Punk is a third line player who makes a name for himself from his antics not his play. I only wish he was playing on the Rangers when Stevens was here.

On the topic, If the Devils can land Phaneuf the need to go get this guy. It would be a good match for both, Lemaire would be great for his game and he would give us that physical presence (sorry Whitey) we have been missing for years.

I'd like him

2 years ago. Now, he doesn’t look like half of that player, and surely isn’t worth that price.

Not really interested

With the way this team is playing and coming together, why make a d move? They are already tops in the league in goals against. There is not one veteran on the team I would want to see go. Maybe they could be interested in dealing Martin if they don’t think they can sign him, but I sure hope not

I can see a trade for a centerman, but a D guy? Not really interested.

No. First off, if the source of a rumor comes from Hockeybuzz, then most likely it’s either nonsensical or simply not going to happen

Second, the only way I can see the defense being an upgrade is to add a “true stud #1” like a Scott Niedermayer. While Andy Greene has been playing very well and has been fairly productive, the Devils don’t really have an offensive threat from the point. Phaneuf looked like he was going to be that guy a few years back, but now? No chance.

While Lou will make a deal when he sees fit, I doubt he’ll make one so close to the holiday roster freeze given the Devils record.

niedermayer is more likely

i think the current coaching of the devils could turn phaneuf into the player he was hyped to be when he was a rookie, just likewhat was done with stevens.i have thought the flames would trade him for a while, but i thought they would be looking for a forward.

kolvachuk is a noway for the devils im certain of that.

Making a case for Alex Semin

Their haven’t been any rumors about Semin coming to the Devils, but I believe it would an amazing move. I don’t think it would take too much to get him, seeing as their is no way the Caps are keeping him come years end, and if we moved Elias to center the Rolston-Elias-Semin line combo would be the best second line in the league with a bullet. I love Semin’s play, and at only 24 his potential is unlimited. He has gone somewhat under the radar thanks to Ovechkin being a line-mate, but when Ovechkin sits out, it seems as if he’s their team MVP. It doesn’t seem like many of you agree, seeing as there is only one vote for Semin.

Semin suffers from playwhenhewantsitis.

Classic case of immense talent thrown away by a poor work ethic.

Besides, he always strikes me as a bit soft.

russian players might leave if the nhl stops allowing players in the olyimpics im sure the devils wont gamble on russians right now.

I'm also a bit puzzled as to why

you only included one centerman on here, when I think it’s the popular opinion on this blog that if defense isn’t the need, center surely is.

This rumor is definitely not true, but Phaneuf would compliment Paul Martin very well with his physical play and offensive skill. The few problems I have is that 1) The Devils will have to dump a ton of salary for Phaneuf, and Rolston’s not going to waive his NTC to play for Sutter in Calgary 2) If the Devils make a trade for Phaneuf, alot of assets would have to be given up and 3) Phaneuf’s salary would end up hurting the Devils in the long run, as the Devils won’t have enough cap space to re-sign Paul Martin and 4) If a Devils game is broadcasted on TSN (or Versus), we will all have to listen to Pierre Mcguire go on about Phaneuf for hours on end.

Phaneuf

I dont think this is going to happen for the devils. If the rumor is true, he would probably go to the isles before the devils, they need talent on D and are probably more inclined to trading big for him. Phaneuf and Streit would be good together.
As for the devils, were doin fine as it is.

Semin is the best prospect

I don’t want Phaneuf on the Devils. He is way overrated. Yes, he took a ton of shots last year (maybe the most by a D-man), but he didn’t score often. He doesn’t come through in the clutch. He doesn’t lead his team. He is all potential and not much on character.

As for a passionate hatred for Avery, who doesn’t have that? It’s neither relevant nor important. Avery is a 3rd liner and so far from being a game-changer that the best strategy is to ignore him to point that he gives up trying to draw penalties and starts committing them. So, did Phaneuf have a passionate hatred for Kyle Okposo that extended into pre-season when he suckered him with a cheap hit in a game that counted for nothing, or is he essentially a cheap shot artist? What a bunch of losers the Isles are for not swarming over big bad Dion and reducing him to a stain on the ice.

Semin has the most talent and heart of the group of candidates you list. He may be difficult to coach, but he scores goals, which is something that other players can’t be coached to do. And if the Devils can’t make him follow their system, then he’s uncoachable.

by Timmonnj on Dec 15, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

And now you'll see another example

Alexander Semin has a beating heart, just like you and me.

(I can be silly too, right?)

But yeah, Semin has oodles of talent but he hasn’t put it together with the work ethic, decision making, and (for lack of a better word) heart that could make him a star in this league.

The Devils have tried this experiment with Viktor Kozlov years ago and to, well, not much of a result. Maybe with Semin, who is still relatively young, he can still be taught? I wouldn’t want to see the Devils give up much for him unless they seriously think they can make him smarter, faster, stronger, and play harder.

Semin

Cant understand how anyone who sees Semin play in just a few games can confuse him with someone with ‘heart.’ Immense talent, and I love watching him play when his confidence is going. But too often, I see Semin ‘disappear’ during the game while giving the opposition offensive opportunities because of his lack of work ethic. More than anyone else on that team (maybe even including Ovechkin), as a Devils fan, Id like to see Nicklas Backstrom in a Devils uniform.
Either way, I doubt Lou will do anything on that scale, no need to. Niedermayer would be nice, and it could happen around deadline time before he retires.

I know this is a long dead thread, but looking on a Flames blog they seem to think Phaneuf is amazing. Their CHEAPEST proposal was this,

To NJ: Phaneuf
To Cal: Parise OR Zajac OR Bergfors, Martin OR Oduya, and 2 1st rounders

Words fail me.
