The Missing Piece
While reading the Phaneuf post, I started pondering the possibility of having a player, who was a huge part of the Devils defense in the past, back in the lineup: Scott Niedermayer. Looking back a few years and seeing one of the most well-rounded players in the league go “coast to coast” and put it in the back of the net was a sight any hockey fan would enjoy. Then, thinking Niedermayer seems too old (he looks like my great-uncle due to the 06-07 playoff beard) and probably engaged in a long-term contract, I stopped daydreaming. Just for fun, I checked out his age and how long he is on contract for and found something interesting: Niedermayer is 36 and is signed to a 1 year 6 million $ deal and does not have a no-trade clause included.
At the beginning of the summer, Lou contacted Niedermayer before he signed again with Anaheim. Although there wasn’t really an offer, the fact that Lou was interested at the beginning of the year suggests that there may be moves made before March 4th. Lou isn’t the type of GM to make big trades, but he might consider a move on this one, especially seeing as the Ducks are tied for dead last in the West. Anaheim might feel bringing new faces or racking up picks would do them some good. Signing Niedermayer at the end of the year would be a safe and conservative way of doing things, but he may be traded before then. Personally, I would be tempted to play it safe and wait for his contract to expire, although he might slip away
The possibility of Niedermayer rejoining the organization is very interesting. I don’t think he would play with Martin (they’re both left handed), but having two pairs of defensemen; one with Martin and the other with Niedermayer would be incredible. Checking Niedermayer’s stats (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8458517), he is no Paul Coffey, but his value would be how he makes plays happen. His amazing skating creating openings and his proper defensive plays setting up counterattacks would boost other players’ performances leading to more goals for and less goals against. Niedermayer is an excellent leader having been the captain of both franchises he has ever played for (New Jersey and Anaheim). The devils are in good defensive shape already, but Niedermayer may be the last piece of the puzzle depicting a Stanley Cup.
With his wealth of playoff experience, the prospect of Niedermayer playing for New Jersey during the post-season would be daunting for other teams. Do you think Niedermayer would be a good addition to the club? Would you wait to sign (if so, for how much) or trade (for whom)? Let me know what you think about the post and the “Niedermayer Affaire”.

I’d say Lou pulls this off at the halfway point or at the Trade Deadline. As a side note, do bonuses get moved with a player getting traded? Niedermayer’s cap hit is $6.75 million, and that $750 000 are bonuses for Niedermayer

I would say if it happens at all, it will be at the trade deadline. Meanwhile, the way things are going for us we don’t have to do anything, the kids are playing better than expected and Brian Rolston might actually be showing some signs of life.
My main concern with doing this deal is what we have to give up in order to get Scotty back. Personally, if it means giving up some of these young players that are performing so well, I’m not prepared to sacrifice a really bright future for it. Now, if they were crazy enough to do it for Zubrus and Mottau, I’d have that deal done yesterday.

This is a feeling that is more common than you may think. I’d talk with other fans at games and they’d tell me that they want Scott Niedermayer back and think he’s coming at the trade deadline. In fact, Rich Chere had a post asking whether Scott Niedermayer will be back in November.
If Anaheim is truly out of the playoffs by then – and currently, they’re starting to go to the outside looking in – then I can see them trading Niedermayer. He’s an expiring contract and moving him to a contender will make him happy while giving the Ducks plenty of cap space.
In the case that of a poor Anaheim team and a Niedermayer who may want to be traded by the deadline, then Anaheim will have plenty of suitors and little leverage. So he may be gained for not as much as you may think; but Anaheim is going to want prospects and picks to replace him to justify the trade. Dainius Zubrus, Brian Rolston, etc. isn’t going to give Anaheim much of a reason to trade him to New Jersey.
That all said, as much as I love the current depth of the Devils and the development of their prospects, if Lou honestly believes Scott Niedermayer will put the Devils over the top en route to a Cup, then the deal has to be made even if it means seeing Zharkov, Halischuk, etc. on another team. Anytime you got a chance to really beef up for a championship run, then you have to make the difficult deals to make that happen.
Do the Devils need to make this deal? I’d like to see what this team does when Paul Martin comes back first.

I think getting Nieder back would be a great move on the part from the Devils. With that said, the price going the other way better be equal in terms what Nieder will bring to the Devils and for how long.
Nieder has been the past few years been thinking about leaving the sport, and after some time comes back under one year contracts. Is this his last year on the ice? So do we trade our future for another 1/2 year player.
There been times I thought Lou was wrong for trading some players for short term answers and those traded never make it on other teams – Vadim Sharifijanov was one -
I think Lou will make the right move for the organization.
For me – I would not trade the farm for an older Nieder -—- 3rd round pick either Pelley or Halischuk and a defense man like Taormina or Magnan

At first
i didnt like the idea of an old Niedermayer on the team just because of how our young talent has been preforming and really stepping into they’re own. i havent been following nieds n the ducks but if hes still preforming at a high level and still the same i’d love to see him back on the devils. i absolutely hate White he just seems like he never knows what hes doin n hes huge but never makes those big hits, so seeing him leave would be amazing but i also think the devils have a great crop of young talent n if Lou really wants to make a run for the cup and thinks nieds is needed then i think we can afford to lose a few of our prospects
Unfortunately White has a no-movement clause. But even more unfortunately, with his eye injury no one would take him, and also Lou’s loyalty is a tough thing to break.
