Game #34: New Jersey Devils @ Atlanta Thrashers

New Jersey Devils at Atlanta Thrashers, Dec 19, 2009 7:00 PM EST

The Time: 7:00 PM EST

The TV: MSG

The Radio: 660 AM WFAN

The Preview: Mine's up and here.  Check out Bird Watchers Anonymous later for a GameThread of sorts.

Gulitti is in Atlanta: Check out Fire & Ice a bit later for any roster updates. Anything I see there, I'll update here prior to the game.  Update: Per Gulitti, Brodeur is starting in net. Thanks to JoeyV for mentioning this in the comments too.

Song to Get You Pumped Up and That's Really It, Just Pumping, Really: My mind is drawing a blank on Atlanta-area metal bands. So in that vein and with a SNOWPOCALYPSE happening in New Jersey, let's heat things up with some hard hitting funk from the 70s.  Back when Atlanta had a team called the Flames, appropriately enough.  This is Two Sisters of Mystery by Mandrill.

Please join in the comments to talk about tonight's game. Remember to keep all comments clean and relevant to the game. Tangents are OK. Talking about the Devils in general or the Thrashers in general is OK.  Other games are OK.  But let's not derail the thread to some other team or the values of hard hitting 70s funk.  Go Devils!

Off topic, but Mastodon’s from the Atlanta area (if you’ve heard of them). But back on Topic, Gulitti said yesterday Marty’s okay, which is good news. A win today will definitley keep us ahead of the Penguins LETS GO DEVILS!

Good thing for the Devils that the game is in Atlanta. I can’t remember the last time we had such a vicious snow storm so early in the season. Go Devils!

by JoeyV on Dec 19, 2009 7:20 PM EST reply actions

Looks like Atlanta follows the Washington school of thought for team-building: all offense that either wins in a shooting gallery or else relies on the goal tender to carry them.

Pretty ugly goal. Pretty for Hainsey, but ugly on several levels for NJ.

man that was a stinkeroo on whitey…chipshot clear caught him totally flat-footed.

Pikka has more use than Peters does.

According to the radio broadcast Atlanta put a bunch of their big tough fighters in so we countered by putting Peters back in the line up…

Too bad.

I would’ve just kept Corrente around as well in that occasion.

And Chico is just lecturing the Thrashers on their terrible defending so far. Wow. I know, he’s biased, but he’s just killing the Atlanta defensive effort. Not that he’s without justification.

I was starting to think it would take an ugly bounce or a deflection to beat Pavelec.

Pavelec robs Rolston, who took a good shot off a loose puck. I estimate that’s the 15th one the Atlanta defense completely missed.

You'd think that Robby Nied's goal would make ATL get stingy on D.

Right now, it’s not the case, thankfully. 21 shots us, them 3. If that’s not lopsided, I don’t know what is.

Antropov breaks free and scores

So the Devils have all of these shots but Atlanta has the highest of quality shots. That’s a goal, he splits White-Mottau and finds the top corner.

by fearloathing13 on Dec 19, 2009 7:44 PM EST reply actions

When a team is down they tend to open it up offensively and take chances, but what the hell do you do when a team lets you shoot as much as you want and you just can’t score?

by elesias on Dec 19, 2009 7:45 PM EST reply actions

The first is over and this is terrible.

The Devils had all of these shots – and some really, really great chances. So many mistakes and lazy play by Atlanta in their own end. But when the Devils made a mistake, Atlanta took FULL advantage.

Atlanta should be kissing Pavelec’s feet and look to tighten things up. Sadly, the Devils almost NEED Atlanta to continue being so passive in their coverage to try and make a come back here.

I’m worried at what the next 40 minutes could bring.

I never really

like Brodeur being pulled…i feel even if his play is down or the team is faltering he is the ultimate equalizer. BUT….i like this move. It was between periods so what had to be said was no doubt done so by Lemaire. This team knows it will have to play that much harder and tighter in front of Denis.

by HELLAWAITS on Dec 19, 2009 8:22 PM EST reply actions

He usually uses it as motivation in the next game, which bodes well since that’s against the Penguins.

by elesias on Dec 19, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I haven’t seen White and Mottau together too much this period; I think Lemaire grilling the defense in addition to the goaltending change have certainly helped.

Again, I thought Danis would start; but I would be the first to admit that Danis gives up those same 3 goals were he in Brodeur’s skates for that first period. Still, the team looks far better in their own end.

The big difference in Atlanta’s end is that Pavelec isn’t stopping everything in sight and Atlanta still sucks on defense

Rod Pelley

by HELLAWAITS on Dec 19, 2009 8:41 PM EST reply actions

Second period over

Atlanta put out more offensive pressure, more “traditional” attacks, and put at least 12 shots on net. Makes sense for them because their defense is so porous, that their offense really is the best defense.

Ondrej Pavelec finally is cracked and while the Devils didn’t get so many shots (“only” 9), they scored 3 goals. Rolston off a breakaway, McAmmond off a rebound during a power play, and Rod Pelley opening his goal account with a rising shot from distance that just fooled Pavelec.

Danis came in net and has looked good. Colin White and Mike Mottau aren’t playing together, Mottau’s with Oduya and White’s with Fraser. Good move, both were having a bad, bad, bad game together. Defense looks tighter despite allowing 12+ shots.

it’s 4-3 NJ and this third period will be critical. The Devils absolutely cannot sit back on Atlanta, they must add to their lead because as we saw in the first, the Thrashers have the fire power to score many goals and quickly.

On that note, Zajac had a good chance but he fired it wide.

Rod Pelley and Andrew Peters were just on a two-on-two. Pelley did well to fire it but the rebound was swallowed by Pavelec.

I swear I’m not making that up.

Good thing Kozlov hustled back, as the Thrashers conceded ANOTHER Devils rush. To think, if they had been playing competent – not necessarily great, just acceptable – defense, then maybe they’d be winning this game.

This just in: Chico isn’t impressed by the Thrashers’ defense.

by elesias on Dec 19, 2009 9:05 PM EST reply actions

I agree; this was a useless signing to begin with.

Wish Corrente was still up here and Clarkson not injured. They can do everything. And I’d rather have Fraser than Peters.

Beer is good! And stuff!

by R_Adragna on Dec 19, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

Peters and Clarkson are in different leagues when it comes to fighting, and I think they (and we) would rather have Clarkson on the ice rather than in the box for 5 minutes at a time.

Not saying it was a good signing, but with Brashear and Pronger and Rupp in the division, I can kind of see the logic in the signing. Doesn’t explain why he’s playing tonight, though…

The talk of Peters trying to score

Reminds me of when Cam Janssen scored his first. That was very amusing.

Bing bong, about 6.5 minutes in and the Thrashers put a shot on Danis for the first time this period.

Or not

The official scoresheet still says no. Maybe Atlanta (Slater) deflected their own shot away from the net?? I swore Danis got a piece of that.

There. There is a shot on net by Atlanta. Bogosian from the point, Danis holds onto it. Took a little more than 7 minutes for that this period.

MCAMMOND SCORES! WHAT A PASS BY ELIAS AND WHAT A FINISH!!!

McAmmond with a brace and the Devils’ attacking ways in this period is rewarded!!!

Kovalchuk gives it up in the neutral zone – he has had a bad night, in my view – and McAmmond got it up, goes to the net, and bangs one home!

I know they’ve taken measures, including taking his opinions into account, to improve this team around him and Atlanta is currently in playoff position… but is Kovalchuk tanking to get traded or something?

surely in a game where the Devils scored 5 goals you would think Zach, Zajac, Elias, Jamie, or Bergfors would have at least 1 between them right? Nope. McAmmond 2, Pelley 1, and Nieds 1

FINAL 5-4 Devils win

AND THE COMEBACK IS COMPLETE

Atlanta’s offense shocked the Devils early, but the Devils didn’t relent on offense, they climbed back into it as Atlanta’s defense just let them do as they wished for much of the game. They put a lead together, the Thrashers struck late, but the Devils made sure they had no easy chance at an equalizer.

What a come from behind win. What a game. Give me some time, I’ll get a recap up.

Good to see Danis get some time.

I think he should’ve started to begin with. It wasn’t necessary to put Marty in again on back to back games, especially since last night was home and tonight was on the road.

Hard Fought Battle

Great to see the Devils pull out the win. We had a couple of random players score tonight which is really just a testament to the depth of this lineup. Excellent come back. I also thought it necessary to take Brodeur out seeing that he has barely had any time off lately. I also thought the Devils fought a little harder on the defensive end to give Danis a better chance to win this game.

by Tim G on Dec 19, 2009 9:50 PM EST reply actions

In terms of the defensive end, I’d agree that the Devils did well to avoid giving up any big chances for Atlanta. That Kovalchuk had a terrible game really helped.
