Game 38 GameThread: New Jersey Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils, Dec 30, 2009 7:00 PM EST

TV:  MSG+ (HD)

Radio: 1130 AM WBBR

WJC Thread:  Not here.  But there's a whole FanPost about it if you want to talk/complain about Patrice Cormier.

Previews: My preview is up and below this post; it is also available directly here via link. For the opposition, Frank D has this preview up at Pensburgh and suggests that Brent Johnson could get the start tonight for the Penguins.  Hmm.

Song to Get You Pumped Up for Tonight: It's Pittsburgh so it's another song by the geniuses of Don Caballero.  This is Mmmmm Acting, I Love Me Some Good Acting off of the Damon Che-led reboot of Don Cab's 2006 album World Class Listening Problem.

I'll be attempting to comment via mobile at the Rock from Section 1, Row 16, Seat 5.   As usual, all comments must be clean and relevant to the game.  Tangents are acceptable and talking about the Penguins or Devils in general is OK.  But please do not use this for other purposes and to constantly deride Sidney Crosby and "Cindy" or some variation thereof because, well, those comments suck.  Go Devils!

Nice start to the game. The Devils seem to be skating well so far. Also it’s good to see Zharkov back in the line-up, so far he has impressed me.

And Johnson got fooled by a man who is starting to become a nightmare for Pittsburgh: Niclas Bergfors.

Devils look good early, put some more on net though. A few early misses.

Maybe it’s just my bias of being a Devils fan but I think I would take Parise over Crosby. He is better defensively and whines a lot less.

Crosby might get more points but the +/- for Elias and Parise are better and to me that makes a huge difference

by fearloathing13 on Dec 30, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

The points per game for Crosby are 1.35. Parise gets 0.81 and Elias has 0.86. So Crosby wins in points but when you look at +/- Parise has +59 and Crosby has +44 and they have been in the league the same amount of time.

by fearloathing13 on Dec 30, 2009 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

On a side note Malkin has done more for his team than Crosby.

Devils continue to buzz and everything is just going wrong for the Penguins. Staal missed an easy put back

The Penguins improved and some great chances that Brodeur said no to. At the same time, they had some shockingly bad plays and if it wasn’t for Johnson, the Devils would have increased their lead.

Keep up the offense, Devils. Don’t force Marty to have a shutout tonight

Man there’s no question. NJ has Pittsburgh’s number this season. Wish I could say it was a good game. Actually I would be able to say that even in the wake of a loss, but that one really put me to sleep.

Some people just need the flash to get into a game. Maybe the Pens need to take some lessons from the Devils on good team defence

by fearloathing13 on Dec 30, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

you honestly can’t say the pens played bad on defense that game. Johnson’s goal was flukey but it was still a strong outing by both him and the Pens defense.

Not bad just not as good as NJ. I’ll agree on the strange goal but how can you call it boring?

by fearloathing13 on Dec 30, 2009 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno. I’ve seen really good one-goal games this season and been pretty enthralled. This one just didn’t do it for me though. Although I will admit I’m beyond exhausted right now too, so that could’ve easily played a factor as well.

by fearloathing13 on Dec 30, 2009 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

haha well played for Devils fans but I don’t think many Pittsburgh fans are happy with the performance right now. Like I said, NJ has Pittsburgh on lockdown this season

You guys had some good chances and Johnson stood on his head for a good part of the game but when Marty and the defense are on we are a tough team. Good luck on the rest of the season, unless it’s against the Devils of course.

by fearloathing13 on Dec 30, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I’ve seen more than a couple of Devils games. You’re right about that.

Obviously the same to you, but if there is any team the Pens need luck against right now it’s the Devils.

I’ve noticed a trend among opposing fans. When their team beats the devils, its the best game ever. Yet a shutout is boring. hmm. I’ll agree the 1st period and a half wasn’t great fun, but after that 4 v 4 it was a great game.

by skly27 on Dec 30, 2009 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Waiting for the train and all Devils fans are smiling. Crosby and Malkin played poorly, Brodeur played quite well and the Devils were battling for nearly every puck – and won. Johnson played great and I’d almost feel bad that Bergfors’ tight angled shot went in. Almost.

Intense win, no goals for Pittsburgh in at least 120 min. I only regret sharing a train with some very unhappy Rangers fans

What’s with Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe doing at consecutive Devils home games? Has he been going to most of them throughout the season? Espo was at the Atlanta game too. I guess they know what games to go to and what team to see. haha.

Game over Devils win again..

What can I say another shutout for Marty against the Pens. Close hard fought playoff style hockey. I hope Clarkson is o.k. and not seriously hurt. Makes you wonder if the Devils got past the first round last year what might have happened.
