Game #26: New Jersey Devils vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils, Dec 4, 2009 7:00 PM EST
Steve's busy working a New Jersey Nets game. Poor Steve! In any case, the Tampa Bay Lightning come to the Rock for the first time this season. The New Jersey Devils have the chance to rebound from Wednesday's loss. Will they do it?
TV: MSG Plus (HD)
Radio: WFAN 660 AM
Previews: Scroll down or click here to check out my preview of the game. Raw Charge is your Tampa Bay Lightning source on SBN and has a preview here.
Important Lineup News?: Yes. Per Tom Gulitti's earlier report this morning, Jay Pandolfo and Johnny Oduya will not play, Rod Pelley is back in the lineup, Andrew Peters will be scratched, and apparently Martin Brodeur will start. So expect at least one roster move tomorrow if Pandolfo and Oduya are indeed just resting for tomorrow.
If You're Going to the Game and If You Can: Bring a toy! It's Toys for Tots night. Do some good in the community as you enjoy (hopefully) seeing World Class Hockey by Jersey's Team.
Song to Get You Pumped Up And Is Better Than Steve's Selections: You know what Florida is known for in terms of music? DEATH METAL. Yes, death metal flourished in Florida in the late 80s and through the early 90s. I'm not really a fan of the genre, but all metal fans need to pay respect to the genius of the late Chuck Schuldiner and his group, Death. Here's Flesh and the Power It Holds from 1998's The Sound of Perseverence.
Join me in the comments as I attempt (again) to comment remotely from the Rock. Remember the rules. Keep the comments clean and relevant to the game (GOOD: comments about the game, something you saw on the broadcast, Devils-Lightning related talk; BAD: long, long discussions about what is/isn't good death metal, Tie Domi). And above all, support the New Jersey Devils.

Pre-game skate is on at The Rock. A few Bolts fans are here. The crowd, as usual for The Rock, is still arriving, starting to get to their seats.

zharkov with a nice steal,
but Mccammond with a weak shot
that was going wide
until nittymaki decided that he wanted to stop the action

Lots of movement, few shots on net. NJ looks good otherwise. Zharkov did well just now on the forecheck, leading to a shot.

Devils are especially good looking on the forecheck. All 4 lines are battling when they can, and in due time, they’ll get more chances to shoot.

Just saying hi
If you haven’t noticed with the opponent, Tampa Bay is messing with their lines… Perpetually so far. Lecavalier started on the wing (he NEVER plays wing) of a 3rd line. Tocchet is just throwing lines out as they go.
To strive, to seek, to find, and to forever keep it Raw. Raw Charge.
You know who is really standing out? The Lowell players. They want to make their mark; and they are hustling to do just that.
Devils still yet to get much on offense. They are getting the puck more, but they are not setting up.

Lazy hooks by Langenbrunner. Caught and so the Pk goes to work.
Marty is doing OK of course.

end of first
we start the second on the pk for 28 seconds
First period is up and I’m pretty sure there are more missed shots than actual SOG. Devils should kill this penalty and make an effort to give Niittymaki work. I suggest to stop going far post, but that’s just my view.

I am happy they didn’t score an early goal like most games although I wish the Devils would have put one up. The period sounded good. How did it look?
by CaramelCoveredXMas on Dec 4, 2009 7:43 PM EST reply actions
I’d say it was fair; Devils appear to have more possession, more jump in their game. That said TB came closer to scoring; and neither coach should be happy with the lack of shots.
Still, NJ looks a lot better than they did on Wed.

Parise is called for tripping. Devils responded after the goal, but they are doing very little on offense. I’m beginning to get concerned.

Late hit on Elias by Malone = no call. Fraser takes exception.
I am not happy with the lack of shots. Devils have ONE this period. Unacceptable!

Second period is done and I’m not happy with NJ’s performance. Too many calls and too little shooting/offense. TB defense is holding the blueline well and the Devils cannot breakthrough.
This is still winnable: but the Devils need to up their intensity and effort to do it. Make Niittymaki WORK for a change.
