Game #28 - Devils at Buffalo Sabres

New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres, Dec 7, 2009 7:00 PM EST

Are we allowed to play on the road in December?  Guess so.  Devils-Sabres is usually an interesting, tight battle.

TV: VERSUS

Announcers (Since we are on VERSUS): Doc's with Islanders analyst Billy Jaffe and reporter Bob Harwood tonight.  The studio is the normal guys, plus Eddie Olczyk.  No "Special Guest Analysts" for us.

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Fischer below, and Die By the Blade (one of the best blog titles ever) has the Sabres coverage.

Lineup Update: This is John here, Rich Chere reported that Mike Mottau is a bit sick and is a gametime decision.  If he's not playing, then Matthew Corrente will jump into the lineup on defense.  Update on the Update: Steve here, Gulitti states Mottau is "ill" and out, Corrente in.

Song to Get You Pumped Up But Also Make You Think Deeply About Tonight's Game: Considering what an anomaly a road game is here at this time in the schedule, let's go with "Anna-Molly" by Incubus, off of 2006's Light Grenades.

Join us in the comments, I assume Fischer will give mobile commenting a shot again [John again, not quite, unless you count a laptop as mobile].  Remember the rules. Keep the comments clean and relevant to the game (GOOD: comments about the game, something you saw on the broadcast, Devils-Sabres related talk; BAD: Incubus arguments).  And above all, support the New Jersey Devils.  No peace, no rest.

Buffalo sounds like they are leading in possession, but so far nothing dangerous.

I think it’s gonna be an exciting game.

I see what Zach meant about Buffalo’s defense. Tons of players in the shooting lane, makes it difficult to set-up shots.

But sometimes it makes it easier to draw calls with all kinds of contact. Buffalo caught with a hook.

ZZ Bort Bort Bort does a ton of dogged work in the Buffalo zone. Sabres D seems to be matching them until a defender hooks a Devil.

Lydman got the hooking call.

Not such a great PP as time went on and now Zach Parise is going to go to the box for a slash.

I now see why Buffalo’s PK is so good. Devils offensive performance so far isn’t good, maybe a kill can get the team going?

Running forward on a 3-on-2 while killing a penalty (?!): Very nice.

Missing the net on the ensuing shot? Not so nice.

Devils withstanding Buffalo’s pressure, which is helped by shots on net. Devils not responding with shots of their own, which hurts momentum all the same.

A great rush by Zharkov, and he drops for Elias, who feeds it in front, and it bounces to Brian Rolston, who… looky-here all of a sudden, has 10 goals.

by Steve Lepore on Dec 7, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions

Wow! The Devils hit back on a rush in a surprising fashion! Zharkov took it in, Elias moves it into the slot (I think?), and Rolston slides it in far post.

Prior to the final few minutes, I wasn’t particularly happy with the team’s offense, but fairly pleased with the team’s defense. Of course, the Devils went up 2-0 and should – emphasis on should – have some momentum they’ll try to keep up.

I hope Lemaire reminds the team that what happened against Detroit should not happen. Put on some pressure and it shouldn’t. Go Devils.

OK, you’re up by three and have a power play to really put the nail in the coffin. A poor pass at the point is taken by the Sabres and thrown up and it’s a 2 on 2. What do you do?

If you’re Brian Rolston, you trip an open Sabre and it’s 4-on-4. sigh.

McAmmond should be one of the 3 stars of this game. Everyone had a great game, but he stood out.

I may be mistaken, but with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd period and a record setting shut out on the line, I’m pretty sure Lemaire had the fourth line and the kids out there on defense. That’s a strong statement.

From the radio it was just a very solid game

As noted, with the game on versus, some of us were “shutout” of watching this one (ok, groan), so I had to catch over the internet radio. Sounded like the Devils played solid througout, with exception of very early.

Now the last record is tied and ready to fall before too long. Marty was his typical self on the post game interviews, giving out alot of credit to teammates and the organization.

Devils are 7 points ahead of last year’s pace
