Game #29: New Jersey Devils vs. Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina Hurricanes at New Jersey Devils, Dec 9, 2009 7:00 PM EST

TV: MSG+ (which is available in HD - I didn't know 29 games in, this was confusing some people?)

Radio: WFAN 660 AM

Previews: Mine is below but if you don't want to scroll, here it is. For the opposition, Bob Harwoord has this short preview up at Canes Country.  In case you didn't know, Cam Ward is back.

Lineup Update:  Per Tom Gulitti, Rod Brind'Amour and Cam Ward will be in with Carolina, Sergei Samsonov is out; Martin Brodeur will start in net for New Jersey.

One Additional Note: Feel free to mention the word "shutout."  You will not jinx anyone via In Lou We Trust.  Also, don't whine about "jinxing."   (I may include this note for every game prior to #104 so please get used to seeing it.)

Song to Get You Pumped Up: You know, it's time for a song from a New Jersey-based band.  Here's Snake Pit off of "Ticket to Mayhem" by Whiplash.  If the Devils aren't careful, they'll fall into the hockey equivalent of one tonight.

Please join in discussing the game in the comments, I will give mobile commenting a shot again.  Remember the rules. Keep the comments clean and relevant to the game (GOOD: comments about the game, something you saw on the broadcast, Devils-Canes related talk; BAD: Excessive bringing up of Game 7, complaining about thrash metal).  And above all, support the New Jersey Devils.

Now that wasn’t very fortunate! Good on Elias either Ward opened up his legs too much or a Cane knocked it past him or both.

I really like what the Devils are doing on defense, constant stickchecks have been effective in winning pucks and stopping Carolina. Don’t let the shot totals fool you, the Devils have control.

I’d like to see the offense hit more of their passes, as they are setting up some real good scoring chances. But the pointmen are doing well in support, best exemplified by Greene’s goal.

Ward looks rusty and his defense needs to stop getting in his way; though they are cleaning up the rebounds.

Most of all, I like the Devils attitude. They aren’t looking past Carolina. Seeing Rolston forecheck deep to close out the period is proof enough to me that the Devils aren’t done yet. Keep it UP!

So what went wrong? I think the Devils have let up on D. They took some dumb calls that gave the Canes momentum early, and a goal later. Where’s the stickchecking? Where’s the neutral zone play? Devils need to refocus and swing momentum away from Carolina.

Crowd isn’t large but they are vocal. After the first period, this kinda sucked to say the least.

Game Over..

Looked almost like a replay of game 7 last year the difference was we held on and scored a empty netter to win..Nieds was great on faceoffs tonight and andy greene deserved the number one star. Carolina played tough and they look like they are about to start turning their season around..

Donald Vasquez

by don_vas on Dec 9, 2009 9:43 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know what it is about that Carolina team, but it seems when they score their first goal of the game, regardless of the circumstances, the Devils are so utterly shocked that they forget how to play for a while.

by elesias on Dec 9, 2009 9:47 PM EST reply actions

they keep the Devils pinned in..

They seem to keep a lot of pressure on the Devils and we have a hard time getting it out of our end..

Donald Vasquez

by don_vas on Dec 9, 2009 9:50 PM EST reply actions

Here’s hoping they get this shutout record out of the way sooner rather than later. The longer it takes, the more pressure there will be to get it, and the greater the relief they’ll feel when they do finally get it… which I blame in large part for their poor play down the stretch last year. It’s like, “milestone reached, we can relax now.”

by elesias on Dec 9, 2009 10:38 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely agreed, elesias. Better to get this record out of the way sooner than later. Its a little different than the win record last year because that was more of a reflection of how the entire team played. If the team couldn’t pull the win off, it wasn’t necessarily Brodeur’s fault. Shutouts are much more focused on the goalie and the truth is they can be random. But I do agree: its always better to relieve the entire team of unnecessary pressure.

Just my thoughts concerning the game. The Devils played great for the first half of the game and then they backed into their shells for the second half of the game. They played aggressive hockey, scored the first three goals, then attempted to protect the lead while neglecting to remain on the attack. They can’t play like this again and expect teams not to tie things up. A win is a win, but consistency is just as important as winning. Brodeur came up incredibly clutch.
