NJ Devils Trade Anssi Salmela to Atlanta for Niclas Havelid

Just as I was writing about game atmosphere and Cameron, something big happened! The New Jersey Devils just made a trade!  Thank Tibbs for putting it up right away!

Per TSN, it's a straight-up trade with Atlanta: the Thrashers get Anssi Salmela and the Devils get Nicklas Havelid. By the numbers, here are the stat-lines:

GP G A P +/- PIM PPG SHG GWG GTG SOG PCT
2008 - Anssi Salmela 17 0 3 3 1 6 0 0 0 0 33 0.0

GP G A P +/- PIM PPG SHG GWG GTG SOG PCT
2008 - Niclas Havelid 63 2 13 15 4 42 0 1 0 0 41 4.9

It was only a few days ago, where I first heard the rumors for Havelid among three names Gulitti mentioned.  I offered my thoughts and felt that Havelid was the best of a not-so-impressive bunch.  Based on what the Falconer had, I still stand by this:

OK, he's better offensively than Witt (but then, so is Mike Mottau) and he's managing a plus rating on Atlanta, a team that gives up over three goals a game on average.   Falconer at Bird Watchers Anonymous lists Havelid as a defenseman most likely to be traded.  He does a great job explaining his game and how valuable he could be to a contending team.

On one hand, you can never have too many defensive defensemen who don't take dumb calls.  On the other, it doesn't fill a need for New Jersey.  Still, it's not a totally unreasonable or unattractive deal.  (P.S. No to Oystrick; the Devils could just call up Anssi Salmela as a rookie offensive defensman).

Lo and behold, Lou throws everyone for a loop and a rumor involving him comes true!  I would have liked an offensive defenseman, to be honest.  Havelid's 14 points in Atlanta is more than every other defenseman on New Jersey except for Paul Martin and Johnny Oduya!  Still, he's a defender who is sound in his own end.

The Cost

As far as the cost to the Devils, to be fair, I liked Anssi Salmela.  That he started the year in New Jersey was an encouraging sign and I felt he had some real potential.  He is a young offensive defenseman who likes to put up the shot.  Even when he was called up for a few games when Paul Martin was out, Salmela got some power play time - both a compliment to his abilities and a statement about the lack of pointmen on New Jersey.

Honestly, Atlanta is looking to re-build and Salmela isn't a bad defenseman.  I think as he gets experience, he will become a pretty good defenseman in the NHL. Maybe a #4 defenseman at best, it really depends how much better he can get at positioning and his awareness in his own zone.  That what was keeping him from sticking with New Jersey, and why Jay Leach is still at least with the team as a scratch.  If he can develop some accuracy for that shot, he could stand to make a pretty long career on the point. Will losing Salmela come back to haunt the Devils?  Given the fates of Brad Bombardir, Willie Mitchell, &c., I doubt all that much.

Overall Thoughts

Despite Havelid not being an offensive defenseman, I think that this trade overall is a pretty good one for New Jersey.   The Devils get a capable player without costing the Devils all that much; just their 8th defenseman on the depth chart.  Everyone on the active roster remains a Devil, as it is Salmela heading south.  Chemistry has not been immediately disrupted from the trade, which is important.  With the Devils being as successful as they are, there isn't a need to tamper with the overall feeling in the locker room.

I think it also means that Jay Leach will be heading down to Lowell.  Havelid is a regular NHL defensive defenseman and I don't see the Devils carrying 8 defenders.  In the near future, Havelid will likely be rotated into the line up.  He can spell Greene or Mottau if they aren't doing so well, and he can be put in for games where the Devils could some extra defending in their own end.  He's a smart player and he can provide additional stability in his own end, which is always valuable - especially for the playoffs.  Lastly, the worst case scenario would that he remains a scratch and the Devils roll the 6 defensemen they have been using for much of the season.

For the Atlanta view of this trade, check out Bird Watchers Anonymous where he's got a good idea of Salmela's potential.  For additional NHL Trade Deadline Coverage, check out the SBN Trade Deadline Hub.

Rats

Here it was yesterday at my site. I was hoping the Habs would grab Havelid.

Before the deal, and even before Brodeur’s return to form, I thought the Devils were a strong bet for the Cup. Looks like I may now be spending much time at your site John, come June!

Nic does not bring much in the way of offense—other than a making a good pass. But he is very reliable consistent guy. Frankly I’ll miss watching him.

He was great for the Atlanta locker room and was voted the “Player’s Player” Award by his team mates recently.

I figured he wasn’t all that offense, but it’s good to know that he’s likable and consistent. Lou loves those kinds of players.

By the way, your trade deadline primer on the Thrashers was excellent; thanks.

Thanks glad you liked it.

I’ll be rooting for Havelid to get a Cup with your team this spring.

Not a bad trade...

As I was thinking about the trade deadline tonight I was pretty sure Lou wouldn’t do a thing. All the talk about some big name defenseman was exciting yet I didn’t want to see it come at a steep price. You can always make your team better but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

This Devils team is pretty good as it is and chemistry is the most important thing in my opinion. Last year’s collapse right around the deadline proves that.

So I am happy with this trade. I am sure Salmela is capable of playing in the NHL given the proper time to develop but we get a reliable, and solid defenseman who has playoffs experience. He was on the Ducks in 03, so he knows what it takes to go deep. And he also won a gold at the Olympics 3 years ago. We get depth and I think that’s a safe move considering the team’s potential.

And what if it was turning into a move to send him back to Anaheim and get a puck moving defenseman in return… I think I just got hit with trade deadline fever….

doesn’t this trade eat up all available cap room as well?

by dsarch on Mar 2, 2009 7:11 PM EST reply actions

Nope. Havelid’s salary for this year is $2.7 million. So, you figure with about 20 games left, the Devils are only hit for about $658,536 and change based on my quick, dirty, and kinda fuzzy math.

NHLSCAP is constantly updating the team numbers and as of now, according to what he has, the Devils have 1,464,033 left in payroll. In fact, they figure the Devils could, at most, take 6,641,709 without giving any salary back. I imagine that’s pro-rated though.

Hey John...it's Jay, I finally joined!

I like the trade, classic LL type deal. Provides depth, size and experience on the blueline. He was a +4 on the Thrashers! That says a lot to me. Don’t think Lou will do too much more before Wed afternoon. He has to be careful not to tinker w/ the chemistry too much. If anything I can see a marginal addition at forward. As for the goalies, as we discussed on Saturday i would have to be blown away to give up Clemmer to a potential playoff opponent…or Weekes for that matter

Doesn't anyone else think that Lou

made this deal with the thought of having to move another defenseman in another deal? I just don’t see Havelid being that much of an upgrade over many of the Devils current crop of d-men. Maybe Mottau because he hasn’t had his best pro stretch by any means.

But I could see Lou flipping another defenseman as part of a package to land something bigger.

Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

i’m glad to be reading this part of it, i think the devils chemistry is pretty good and it wouldn’t be a good idea to bring in someone who wouldn’t fit it well so this part of it also sounds ok

by don in central jersey on Mar 2, 2009 8:33 PM EST reply actions

I like this trade, it doesnt mess with the current makeup (aka chemistry) and clearly strengthens the defense. Havelid has been solid for atlanta for a few seasons now, can log high minutes and can play on the powerplay or penalty kill (more likely). I think Greene sits initially, he does have more offensive talent than Mottau, but Sutter clearly likes Mottau and he has been pretty steady this year – nothing flashy but not too many glaring mistakes. Greene on the other hand is somewhat inconsistent, when he’s on he plays like a top 4 dman but when he’s off he’s terrible. The most salient example for me recently was recently in the San Jose game. Can’t remember which goal it was but you could tell from the stands once he didnt step up it was going to be trouble, and sure enough the play resulted in a goal. Not sure if Lou is done, but another move isn’t really necessary.

not a great trade in my opinion.

I cannot see giving up Annsi for another defensive defenseman. They need someone to run the power play. The defense is sound enough already. I think Havelid was picked up because they are planning to offload a defenseman in another deal…

I get that it’s not a sexy trade – it’s mostly for depth and possibly a rental given Havelid is a UFA after this season. (Oh, and the Devils got a minor league forward, Myles Sotesz, according to Gulitti. He will go to Trenton.)

I’m not sure where the idea of a second deal happening is coming from. Who on the D gets flipped? Mottau, Salvador, or Greene aren’t going to yield a lot of value; White and Martin are untouchable in the roster right now; and giving away Oduya would be nuts considering how well he’s done this season.

The power play is largely run by the forwards anyway, as Langenbrunner-Martin and Rolston-Greene have remained as the pointmen on each unit.

another trade

I cannot figure out who will be offloaded yet but I have had this feeling about Madden who has recieved less ice time this year and also possibly Rupp or Pandolfo. Brian Gionta is the big name possibility if they are going to bring in a big name player like a Pronger. I am hoping Lou stands pat from here and does not break up team chemistry. Also remember alot of teams would not mind having Clemmenson right now.
