Game 64 GameThread: Devils @ Toronto
New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs, Mar 3, 2009 7:30 PM EST
Per Gulitti, your starting goaltenders for tonight.
Here is my preview of the game. For the other side, here is Pension Plan Puppets' preview of the game. I would like to point out this:
Of course, the Leafs have managed to beat the Devils twice this year with the kinds of efforts that could have seen the Leafs win game seven in 2001 as opposed to bowing out with six shots.
The Devils held Toronto to 6 shots on May 8, 2000 and it was in Game 6. Still, that 3-0 win eliminated Toronto from the playoffs as the Devils marched on to their second Stanley Cup. Sorry to be nit-picky, P-Triple, but I figured you'd want that clarification.
Anyway, feel free to leave any and all comments about the game here. Visit the Puppets if you want to jump in with a ton of Toronto fans. Just keep it clean and keep it relevant. Go Devils!

Early indications are that it will be a LONG night for toronto’s defense. The Parise line just kept it in Toronto’s end for seemingly a minute and a half. And then Elias kinda lobbed a one-timer that maybe he should have done better on.

BRING OUT YOUR VIDEO REVIEW!
Clarkson is driving to the net, misses the net, a Leaf crashes into Toskala, it goes over the line and the ref says it’s a goal!?
Really!

1-0 DEVILS!
They rule that the defense knocked the net off as the puck was going in and so…Clarkson with the goal!
Not pretty, but we’ll take it!

Clarkson doesn't score many pretty ones
But I’ll take it.

Ian White hits Madden right in the teeth with the stick.
But it was the flat part of the stick.
Devils on the PP, only 2 minutes – no blood.

Devils, why are there scoring chances against you on power play?

He keeps calling him Moto.

First Period
I really wish the Devils had taken advantage of all the turnovers the Maple Leafs keep having in their own zone!
Alas, the Devils got fortunate with a goal; Brodeur has looked fine; Paul Martin has been a rock in his own one; and Toronto’s not taking this game lying down.

Intermission - Gulitti
While Lou says that he’s looking for a fair deal for Clemmensen; Gulitti doesn’t think the Devils will make any more moves. No deal will be made just to make a deal. And he definitely doesn’t think that Clemmensen will stay in the East should he be traded at all.

Hey has anyone heard why Havelid isn't in there tonight?
Was it just too soon? His debut will be Sat I suppose?

Second Period
Well, the Devils are getting the better of the Leafs in some ways; but they are just not able to put a ton of quality shots on Toskala. The Devils are good offensively up until the actual shot, which has been blocked, missed, and been right to Toskala. If they can get a little more space and be a bit more lethal in shooting, they can really blow this game wide open.
P.S. Bobby Holik likes the Havelid deal, as he can do it all but “not on a Norris level” and “he won’t upset the chemistry apple cart.”

Second Intermission
Lou straight up says that Anssi Salmela was who Atlanta was interested in, the organization likes the defensemen they have in their system, and it wasn’t an issue where they saw something wrong with Salmela. The more you know.

Hey John
Have you heard how Corrente has been this year?
I missed the second period picking my daughter up from school. How was Brodeur?

1-1, Toronto scores
Mitchell on the doorstep and it was easy for him.
Time for the Devils to respond.

And Gionta nearly puts one in while diving shortly thereafter, but the post denied him!
I guess the Devils are unleashed again?

Toronto with heavy pressure on the PP, but nothing going.
Penalty was killed and then a Leaf just DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVED – Mottau called for tripping.

On a second look
It wasn’t much of a dive still Mottau wasn’t thinking.

2-2
Oh, hey, Mitchell scored and made the Devils pay for that trip.
Time to respond again.

This game is getting intense and given how the Leafs have done in overtime/shootouts as of late, I don’t think the Devils want to risk it against Toronto here.

Me neither, but...
Given that Washington lost tonight, and IF we go that route, then we could take the point. I’m knocking on wood with this one.
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!
Devils and Leafs both trading shifts of good chances.
The Leafs are just blocking and/or thwarting the Devils’ shots otherwise and it made a big difference.
Toronto looked shaky to start but they really warmed up to the task as the game went on. They battled real hard today.
Now, which team will have the extra juice left to get it done in the next 5 minutes?
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Both teams want to get this done before the shootout, that’s for sure! It’s very high paced hockey out there.

WHAT AN END! WHAT AN END! WHAT AN END!!!!!!
Devils’ first goal comes from crashing the net and the winner comes from the same thing! Brian Gionta with a GOOD shot. JOHNNY ODUYA FOLLOWED THAT ALL THE WAY HOME.

I don't know what Kubina was thinking
Maybe he thought there wasn’t enough time left for another rush.

Blame Stempniak
He just coughed it up into the corner, allowing Gionta the space and the puck to fly up ice. Oduya, late on the change, smartly flew up ice.

Kubina should not have been charging the net there though
Stepniak shouldn’t have coughed it up, but Toronto would’ve been fine had Kubina been in position.

I'm feeling a 300 spoof.
Toskala: This is Madness!
Johnny: Madness? THIS…IS…ODUYA!! (launches slap shot in net for winning goal)
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!
Either way, the Leafs are falling in a hole. And that’s good for the Rangers of Canada.

Thank God it ended the way it did!
I was preparing to cringe if the Leafs put Blake in for the shootout.
