Game 76 GameThread: Devils @ Rangers
New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers, Mar 30, 2009 7:00 PM EDT
It's time for the rivalry game. It'll be the last one for the regular season, and the Devils want to break this streak. From Gulitti's report at today's morning skate, it doesn't appear the Devils will make any lineup changes for tonight's game.
As expected, much hay is being made about Sean Avery. Brent Sutter both told Gulitti and Chere (who happens to mention Avery in about every one his posts today) the following:
"This is about the New Jersey Devils trying to do what we need to do to get our game back to where we want to get it to and push forward. And it's about the New York Rangers wanting to play well and do the same thing. That's what this game is about. All this stuff about Marty and Avery makes a great story line, but it's totally irrelevant about what's going on."
That's exactly right. Dittos, kudos, and what-have-you to Mr. Sutter. I completely agree. (Aside: Thank you Rich Chere for at least stating what happened in Avery's last game against the Devils.)
In any case, Blueshirt Banter (outside of whining about Avery) says it's a must win for the Rangers. It's a must-win for the Devils unless they want to go into April in a slump and tell Philadelphia, "Hey, let's make these last two weeks interesting." And so it is your game thread tonight. Your expected starting goaltenders:
VS.
You can go to Blueshirt Banter for the other side of tonight's game. For those of us who hate the Rangers and/or love the Devils, keep it here. Feel free to leave any comments about the game; just keep it clean (PG) and keep it relevant to the game. Go Devils.

First penalty is against Zajac of NJ
Hook on Marc Staal’s elbows, Marc Staal feels his knees going out so he fell down. Conspiracy!!!!
Devils on the PK.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Actually he hooked his stick
And just lifted it. This is one of the major issues I have with the new NHL. It encourages players to do nothing but dive even on a legitimate play. If the ref had seen that more clearly, he should’ve called a dive on Staal.

Fair enough, but Zajac knows better that you can’t really do that move from behind

Lift a player's stick?
That’s about the only legal move you can make from behind. It’s one of the best, smartest pure hockey plays you can make. The ref blew it.

Devils look tentative so far
They’re having a hard time getting the puck out of their zone as they have the last several games.
by Tyler Bleszinski on Mar 30, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions
And the Devils force Lundqvist to freeze it.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
The way this game is going early on,
the Devils are going to give up 40 plus shots again.

so far, they all have been right at Brodeur; so that doesn’t concern me. The Rangers have yet to have a truly strong shot on net.

Many of the goals that have beaten Marty
lately have been point shots with traffic in front. I don’t think that has escaped the Rangers’ coaches.

Really? The two goals against by Carolina came off rebounds…

The defense needs to step up a little less...
The defense got up too quickly and conceded another 3-on-2. Fortunately, the Rangers aren’t making much of anything with them.

Another giveaway by Martin
Damn it, Paul, wake up.

OK. THAT was a dangerous chance
Brodeur robbed the Rangers off that rebound!
Devils offense is looking to pass to the slot just a bit too much
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Rangers not so strong in their own zone as well
The Devils have got to do better when they cough it up on their end. That last one was a wasted shot by Mottau.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
The Devils have also shot it directly into
the Rangers several times. Make better decisions with the puck, boys.

Congrats Marc Staal
You jacked up Parise and the Devils STILL had the puck in the zone. Good job for that useless hit!

First Intermission
Devils conceeded quite a bit in terms of shot, but really only major one on Brodeur – which he stopped. Devils do look shaky in their own zone.
Devils looking for space and came close on a couple passes; but couldn’t get a big one on Lundqvist. Still, the Rangers have been coughing it up too much for their liking, I’m sure.

Second Period's starting
Will we see a better Devils’ performance this period? Let’s hope so!

Gionta's up for this game
I’ve noticed Gionta’s hustling more so than usual. I’d wonder he’ll get something tonight?
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Well, THAT was a chance a minute ago.
Rolston and…Madden was it? Both had two good chances, but Lundqvist was up for it.

1-0 rangers
Gomez off the rebound. Hey, that’s how Carolina scored. Devils didn’t clean that one up, Marty hung out to dry, and so it goes.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Well, the Devils aren't falling down!
Some good shifts after the goal – that’s what you want to see. Havelid got unlucky on a rebound, Devils nearly cram one in later, I think New Jersey still has a chance in this one.

What? His team is winning? I…don’t understand this call?
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
I think because of the icing
That line had been out for a really long time. He didn’t want the Devils to get a goal because of that.
Still it’s a strange call.

The Devils are going to allow almost 35 shots through
two periods. That is just abysmal.
by Tyler Bleszinski on Mar 30, 2009 8:34 PM EDT reply actions
Clearly.
it’d be one thing if the Rangers only got one goal or so off said 35 shots. But the defense has looked slow out there so far.

Second Intermission
Awful, awful, awful period. The Rangers have smelt blood and have drew it. The Devils have paid the price for poor defensive work.
It’s going to take one brilliant third period to have something come from this game.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Can I curse on this thread?
Because I’m about to break most of the stuff in my house. This is one of the most frustrating periods I’ve seen, and I was at the Hurricanes game on Saturday. It seems like everyone forgets what to do when they get anywhere close to the net, they can throw it in close from the point, but it looks like a monkey humping a football once they get 10 within the net.
The D looks like they are trying to skate on grass. Its embarrassing. Please don’t let me go to work tomorrow…

2 minutes for roughing and it’s fair – he was roughing up Staal who was a good distance away from the play. What was Mike Rupp thinking?

I’ve always known they’ve been good at the shootout/overtime, i guess i just missed that stat.
And the rangers have them off their game, they have them angry and frustrated, they aren’t focused like those wearing blue obviously are

If anything, the Devils in retrospect really shot themselves in the foot by not simplifying their game and letting the Rangers dictate the game from the first period on. Since then, it’s been downhill.

You know, if the Devils were winning 3-0, the Ranger fans would whine about a conspiracy against Avery.
But since the Rangers are winning 3-0, they will claim Avery was a major factor when tonight…he really wasn’t.

Sometimes, you get what you deserve. The Devils didn’t do nearly enough to challenge Lundqvist or play competent defense for 30 minutes.

Game Over.
This game ended up exactly as I was dreading all weekend. Lundqwist outplays Brodeur the Devils are intimidated by Avery and once again they are letting the other team take it to them. This will be a big momentum builder for the Rangers if we play them in the first round. I will have a miserable night tonight thinking about this crushing loss. I still love you Devils…

I don't think Lundquist outplayed Marty
The Devils didn’t have nearly the attack the Rangers did.

True.
It was like the Devils were shooting at a shooter tutor.
I don’t think the Devils were intimidated by Avery. Sean was a non-factor given the run of play. I felt Avery’s linemates (I believe that’s Gomez and Antropov?) were far more dangerous as they burnt the Devils’ porous defense tonight.
