Round 1 GameThread 4: Devils @ Carolina
New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes, Apr 21, 2009 7:30 PM EDT
The New Jersey Devils have a real chance to take control of the lead. The Carolina Hurricanes have a real chance to make it a series again. It's going to be one hardfought hockey game.
According to the latest at Canes Country, the news is that Dennis Seidenberg will be back in the lineup. It's not quite clear as to who on the defense will sit - or if Paul Maurice goes with 7 defensemen and sits a forward. Either way, according to Chere earlier today, the Hurricanes are treating Game 4 as a do-or-die situation. I guess Carolina knows all about the Devils' 9-0 record when they are up 3-1 in a series.
The starting goaltenders will be the same and you should treat this game as a chance to have your say here at In Lou We Trust. Please share your comments and thoughts about the game as it goes on. I'll definitely be commenting on what's going on and I'd love to hear what you think. Please keep it clean and relevant, and of course, Go Devils!

Ruutu DOWN! Zubrus to the box
Zubrus threw an obvious elbow. DUMB.
But Ruutu is back up on the bench and Carolina will enjoy a PP

6+ minutes to the first Devils shot
At least the Devils have had better possession after their penalty kill. Something to build on.

A great glove save on Ward
And so Chico goes on about Ward’s little league career.
It was a sharp looking glove save.

1-0 Carolina
Seidenberg with a strong deflection, but Staal hits the bouncing puck on the rebound for the goal.
Rough start! First time Devils are behind in regulation all series!

2-0 Carolina
The Hurricanes are surging now. Brodeur couldn’t cover up a puck due to a crashing of the net by Walker. Bayda buries a one timer from Walker!
Devils need a response and quick. it’s not even 10 minutes into the game and the Devils are looking up!

Brian Gionta and Chad LaRose in the box
A bizarre scrum by the benches give them minors.

So far...this is like Game 1
Except reverse the teams. Carolina is dominating in pressure, possession, the play, and, of course, the score.
Devils would be very fortunate to get 1 before the end of the period. then they need to re-tool and re-charge for Period #2.

Devils get a late PP
The Devils have a chance at getting some scoring chances! Notice how I didn’t type “goal” or “score” or anything like that.
Chad LaRose will feel shame for 2 minutes.

One shot
Down 2-0 And all the Devils had was one shot on net on that PP. AWFUL.

First Intermission
Everything just went all wrong for the Devils. The Canes got hot quickly thanks to a dumb Zubrus elbow, the Devils killed that, but then the Canes hit them with a quickfire double – one off a rebound and one off a one-timer. Carolina effectively took the game away from the boards and are playing their style of hockey. They don’t have to worry about Parise or any Devils’ forward because the Canes keep pinning the Devils back to play defense! The best Carolina has done this series, the worst New Jersey has done.
Devils need something big to make something out of this game

That was certainly an ugly period, no attack or forecheck and on the whole played extremely passive. No doubt the worst period by the Devils in the playoffs so far. Maybe mix up the lines a little to get something going, Im curious to see what Gionta (who has played extremely well this series and for the last month or so) and/or Shanahan can do with Zajac and Parise…
Hey, it's a shot on net!
Thanks Parise’s backhand.
That’s what I’m resorting to – the little things. But seriously, even if the Devils win the period 1-0, it’s be a big step forward

Clarkson sits for a elbow
I agree with Chico – this is what the Devils do not need. He talks about balanced scoring; but I think he really means the penalty here.

Well, here's a break!
Jay Pandolfo driving forward to take that puck deep and draws a hook from Matt Cullen! Penalty killed!

Very good work by Jay. good work on the first minute of the 4-on-4 – Devils owned the zone there!
Bad job on that shot, Gionta.

ouch
just when they were starting to get on track
3-0 Carolina
Why is Carolina’s fourth line so quick and able to get to these pucks. Chad Larose buries a rebound! WHY WAS HE ABLE TO GET TO A REBOUND, SALVADOR? WOULD YOU KNOW?
Sutter is understandably not happy; the Panthers fan in the first row is wiping the nacho cheese off his hands; and we’re not happy.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Niclas Havelid caughy holding
given how poorly the Devils defense has been; that Salvador-Havelid looks the worst says a lot.
Go Devils, please. Don’t concede
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Devils kill it but Carolina should have had 4 by now
Also: Carolina leads in shots 28-13.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Bryce Salvador is down
Big scrum in front of the net and Salvador is writhing in pain grabbing his knee. He’s clearly injured – a ton of pain.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
By the way, Brian Rolston is serving Salvador's cross-checking penalty
Insult to injury? No. Salvador took it too far.
Devils look like a give-away machine here. Like Carolina in Game 1!

FINALLY! FINALLY! FINALLY! Devils score! 3-1!
After a penalty kill featuring a lot of Carolina possession and after Elias nearly coughed it up to the forecheck; they hit Gionta with a long pass and he’s through! One on one with Ward and when you get a one on one, you gotta win! GIONTA WON. GOAL
A little life for the Devils!
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Second intermission
Gionta’s goal is a silver lining of a very dark cloud. Defense continues to be a shambles and is now shorthanded due to Salvador’s injury. Devils still taking avoidable penalties, and the Hurricanes continue to smell blood.
The biggest edge Carolina has isn’t their physical play, it’s their passing and puck possession. They have confidence and energy at new highs in this series and now they are even winning the puck on the forecheck and along the boards. No wonder they are winning and looking so good.
But the Devils have a shot. Albeit a long shot, but a shot thanks to Gionta (though outside of him, the Devils have only given Ward a little work. Brodeur on the other hand is trying to salvage this but the defense isn’t cleaning up those rebounds!)
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
37-17
That’s the shot totals, heavily favoring Carolina. Considering NJ’s defense, 50+ is definitely possible for the Canes.

Weak call on for boarding
You know, had I have faith in the PP…this could be big. Ah well

OH MY GOODNESS A POWER PLAY GOAL!!!
Brendan Shanahan on a rebound of Gionta’s shot! Clarkson’s screen confused him and allowed Shanny to put that home!
3-2! IT’S NOT OVER!
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
OK, so it technically wasn't a PP goal
Still. Big goal.
Devils have a real chance for an equalizer, they are buzzing!

Seriously, the Devils look a lot better now!
What does it say about New Jersey that they aren’t far from an equalizer after 2 awful periods of hockey?
What does it say about Carolina if they do concede that equalizer?!

CLARKSON ON THE REBOUND!
Wow! Wow! WOW! WOW! WOW!
David Clarkson got sprung in the slot thanks to 2 defensemen NOT covering him and ignoring him, Clarkson got to the rebound, Ward was stretched, and Clarkson had the final move for the easy one!
Carolina takes a timeout and the need it!

This is playoff hockey
Your heart pumping, seeing the unlikely actually happen, hoping your team buries the chances while hoping the other team gets stopped, and you’re on the edge of your seat.
It’s equally nerve-racking and exciting due to the importance of it all. If the Devils can pull off the win here, I don’t know what i’d do really!

What i don’t love? GIVEAWAYS
What i like? Devils pushing ahead on offense, Madden got stopped by Ward’s toe…

NOOOOOOOOOOO
The Canes are celebrating, but we will need a review! Did it cross the line in time?!

It's a series again
No interference call on Jokinen. Ref isn’t having any of this, but damn it, Marty has every right to be angry!

This means we get to "bump" Ward the second he gets out of the blue for the rest of the series, right?
Right?
Oh, you mean that would have been called against us? Oh, yeah, I forgot that we play under different freaking rules.
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
Game over
That goal was a killer hope it doesnt turn the series Carolinas way. We made a tremendous comeback and I felt if it went into overtime the game was ours. Oh well I just hope we can overcome this…

Recap is up
Rule 69.1 was violated. Commentators talk up that the Devils should have done better at the end, and fine, but it doesn’t excuse this.
Now watch Cam Ward dive for every call in Game 5!
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
Almost
Brodeur was certainly interfered with, but I guess the reason there was no call was because he was clearly outside his crease when the contact occurred. Don’t know the ruling on that but in the past if the goalie strayed his crease he was open game. Separate of that, I just wish when the opposition is in desperation mode N.J. would just relax a little and make more of an attempt to skate the puck out and better position themselves for an outlet pass to clear their zone than just to clear the puck hastily to the other teams point men to tee off on us-every time this happens no matter the team it bites us in the tail big time.
I agree that the Devils need to be calmer when they get pressed, it showed tonight early on.
Rule 69.4 clearly states that there is no “free reign” on goalies outside of the crease.
