Round 1 GameThread 5: Devils vs. Carolina

Carolina Hurricanes at New Jersey Devils, Apr 23, 2009 7:30 PM EDT

It's time to put the controversy and hope the Devils don't make this a close game.  Either way, the important goal is to get the win, take the 3-2 lead, and force Carolina to be desperate - who knows what that could yield, really.

As usual, I'll be at Section 1 at the Rock, bringing the noise.   If you're there and supporting the right team, please bring the noise as well.  If you're not and you're able to talk about the game online, please share your thoughts about the game as it goes on.  Please keep all comments relevant to the game and keep it clean.  Go Devils - it's time to retake the series!

From the loudest house in the NHL....

Here’s to a great game where both teams play with the utmost jump!
To the Devils faithful nation, if your boys drop the game tonight it will END IN RALEIGH aka. the LOUDEST HOUSE IN THE NHL!!
Sorry if that busts up your plans and also very sorry to read from an earlier post that some “Jackleg” of a Carolina Fan has publicly called Brodeur a B*tch.
MY APOLOGIES AS THAT"S UNCALLED FOR AND UNTRUE!! I’d have Brodeur on my club anyday!! His post game antics are for a reason and it’s part of playoff hockey!! This competition between our teams is great and it’s the best thing about the playoffs. Two very closely matched teams going blow for blow.
I have enjoyed this series and hope the Devil nation has too. It is my opinion that so far the Devils have been the more consistent throughout the series. On the other side of the coin, the Canes did show they can carry the play if they stay on the attack. I believe the Canes learned last game that they cannot sit on a lead with the Devils as the Devils will push back!! Man it’s been a great series!! May the best team win and win healthy!!

~ PLEASE ROCK WARD ~

the DEVILS need to keep the O- PRESSURE and the D- NEEDS to keep the crease CLEAR & BLOCK SOME SHOTS. fight’ em if need be. THE VETERNS NEED TO STEP UP!!! you know Marty will do the job! i don’t blame him for anything!! Marty has been SOLID!!! all the great goalies BLOWUP every now again. that’s what comes with wining 3 cups, loosing 1 cup and all the other playoff runs. the DEVILS NEED to take the hits, give the hits, to get that PUCK & BLAST the net looking for rebounds. ward gives up some rebounds.!!!! ; ) i hope the Devils can recreate game 1. it has been a tough series like i know it would!! this game should yield some intense hockey! it could or will go 7 games, but i would LOVE to see the DEVILS take it in 6 so the cane’s fans go home sad seeing there hopes washed. that would give the devils a rest that they will need!!
SO~ LETS GO DEVILS !! MAYBE ARE DEVILS FAN CAN SHOW SOME LOVE AND GET CRAZY! GO- DEVILS- GO DEVILS- GO!!!

Hey look a bs call.

Clarkie tries to get out of the way, tripped up by Pitkanen, called for Int. What a load.

John called that that was going to happen the other night

And it only took like three minutes for Ward to flop like he was shot.

Seriously. Dude went down like he took on sniper fire. I wonder if he thought these were the tryouts for the Red Bull soccer team across the river. Maddog was pushed into him by one of Carolina’s players, anyway.

our turn on the pp be nice to score one

by cjboyd on Apr 23, 2009 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

The Devils really miss Langs

The Zajac and Parise line just doesn’t look the same.

Wow, the Madden line has been the best line so far.

this is what

I’ve been looking for…fire and passion!!! They better score soon though…old men like this cant keep up this pace all night………

Elias needs to pick his game up

I’m wondering if he’s still hurt. We all know he can dominate. He just needs to do it.

This refereeing is a f@%^ing joke

LaRose CLEARLY went for Marty’s knees there. WTF!!!

Who's the better deflection artist:

Parise or Clarkie?

I've got to go with Parise on that one

Some of the deflections he’s made this year have been insane.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 23, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I particularly liked the one against the Penguins that he deflected between his legs and over Dany Sabourin’s shoulder into the net.

by kellyn on Apr 23, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Woo, Clarkie! I hope they interview him before intermission.

by kellyn on Apr 23, 2009 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

Yay! Awesome playoff beard, by the way. I think he’s the only player on the Devils 25 or younger who can actually grow a playoff beard (I’m looking at you, Travis and Zach).

by kellyn on Apr 23, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL

I’m not sure MARTY could grow a playoff beard. Never mind these young bucks.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 23, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve noticed that there are two types of French Canadian players: the kind that look like crazed French lumberjacks once the playoffs roll around (see, Pascal Dupuis, Maxime Talbot) or the kind that only ever really seem to produce stubble or a goatee, like Brodeur and Marc-Andre Fleury.

by kellyn on Apr 23, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Those two should be lucky to grow pubes at their ages.

Still

Don’t bother trolling. Just enjoy yourself over here amongst friends!

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 23, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Hell yes! Thank you, Carolina. You have become another statistic in the career of Marty Brodeur. With this shutout he has tied Patrick Roy for the most career playoff shutouts with 23. Suck on that.

by kellyn on Apr 23, 2009 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

Andy Greene was awesome tonight. And I’ve got to say that I was really impressed with Havelid. That might have been his best game as a Devil.

Still, Marty stole the show tonight. He was brilliant with anticipation and I don’t know if it was my imagination, but it looked like he was trying to stay closer to the blue paint tonight. But to do that with having an ankle cut by a skate just adds to his legend.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 23, 2009 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

I am so proud of Marty. He could have let what happened at the end of Game 4 get inside his head like he did last year against the Rangers but he didn’t. He was pissed off, but I think he really chanelled that into stoning the Hurricanes. You could tell he wanted to protect that one goal lead, but he also didn’t want to let the ’Canes get anything on him. It was definitely personal.

by kellyn on Apr 23, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Looks like this guy is the one stoning the Canes

Doesn’t he just look hungry?

I am too

The thing about world class athletes is that you don’t want to EVER give them extra motivation. I think that’s what happened with Brodeur. Course the Devils were AWESOME in blocking shots and getting in passing lanes to prevent the quick east-west shots.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 23, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Game over.

A outstanding battle between 2 great goaltenders. I am glad we came out on top. Andy Greene played great he has a really good shot from the point. I hope we can carry this victory over to Carolina and finish it off Sunday…

DEVILS WIN DEVILS WIN

In addition to what Blez said, I would echo the same about Gionta. From the takedown behind the net to the great work on the boards, he was on his game.

Gio

Has been fantastic this series. I’ve been kind of disappointed in Elias so far though. Zubrus has been a physical force though so at least they have two guys playing really hard on that line. I do wonder how hurt Elias is right now though. He just looks…off.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 23, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

The best line in the game was Madden-Shanahan-Pandolfo too

They’ve been absolutely fantastic this series. I’m happy for Pando because so many Devils fans, including myself, wrote him off.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 23, 2009 11:11 PM EDT reply actions

I guess, but it seems like Shan has been dogging it whenever there's not a clear scoring chance.

I may not be seeing things correctly, but it seems every time he gets the puck in neutral ice he dumps it.

I don’t think anyone can truly appreciate what players like John Madden and Jay Pandolfo bring to a team until they are the guys on the ice protecting a one goal lead in a playoff game with only seconds left on the clock and the other team has pulled their goalie for an extra man. They are the kinds of gritty role players that help a team win championships.

by kellyn on Apr 23, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I think the rest of the country is missing what is probably the best, most competitive series as none of these games have been televised nationally.

Greatest Goalie duel I've seen yet

Congrats to the Devil Nation as Marty was simply unreal tonight. Only one goal scored on a tip!! Say what you want but Cam and Marty were the stars of this game. Even though the Canes lost this was a great game. I enjoyed watching these two masters of the crease put on a clinic. Wonder if I’ll live long enough to see this type of goalie skill in a single game again? Here we go folks-Back to Raleigh-still the LOUDEST HOUSE IN THE NHL!! Here’s to game 7!!

I agree that it was one of the best

games I’ve seen. This was as nail biting as you can get. Playoffs to the extreme and just absolutely entertaining.

It’s going to be tough for the Devils to close out the Canes in Carolina. It’s going to probably take the best game the Devils have played all season. We shall see.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 24, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Thank you all for the comments!

Recap is now up. Thank you all for contributing. It was a great game and Carolina fans need to be thanking their respective deities for Cam Ward being on his A game all series long. I felt with a little more luck, the Devils have 2 or 3 goals (how did Madden misplay Elias’ pass when the net is right there for the taking! That could have iced the game!); but we’ll take this just fine! I do hope the Devils’ defenders don’t allow 40+ again at Marty.

But back to the man of the night, Brodeur is simply a legend. If you have not gone to see Brodeur or seen him play, DO IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN. There will not be anyone like Marty again. Ever.

It was a fantastic game to be at and the crowd was electric.

Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
