Round 1 Game 7: Devils vs. Carolina

Carolina Hurricanes at New Jersey Devils, Apr 28, 2009 7:30 PM EDT

It all comes down to tonight's game.  Scroll down for previews and such.  Go to Gulitti and Chere for the latest news.  Opposition link is in the box.  And this thread is for you to follow along with the game.

I will be in my usual seat in Section 1, bringing the noise that the Devils may need to win Game 7 tonight.  But then, I'm usually pretty loud regularly, so maybe they won't need it.  Still.  Support your Devils tonight!  The Devils should play like there will be no tomorrow, so why should we cheer like there is?

Feel free to leave any and all comments about the game, the series, and the teams involved.  PLEASE KEEP ALL COMMENTS CLEAN.  Do be gracious, don't "Flyers/Rangers" it up.

Above all: GO DEVILS

Wow

Not good. Weak first goal. And the first goal seems essential.

Good puck control

by the Devils and the Zubrus line.

WTF is Havelid thinking?

You’re the defenseman, dude. You don’t go backwards with it!

i know what you mean. I get tense during shootouts in the regular season. I’m just glad i can rest till the second round

Marty looks a little jacked up tonight

He appears to be overreacting to plays around him so far. I’m hoping that he settles down.

I'm here too

I’m superstitious and listening on my ipod’s radio because they won last time I did that and lost both times I watched on tv.

But I’m reading here and fire and ice (lots of people there) b/c the blogs are updating faster than the Fan through my ipod.

(Also long time reader, first time poster, go Devils, I hate being stuck in Boston during playoff time).

by alslammerz on Apr 28, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

Please post more often

We need some fellow Devs fans here!

And I’m superstitious as all hell. Everything I did today correlated to a Devils’ player’s number.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 28, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll do my best to post more often.

And it’s not too bad up here, the Internet means I can get MSG from a family cable box at home, but the I watched some of Game 4 until they were down 2-0 and I left (and they came back for the most part) and then I turned off Game 6 after 3-0. I just miss going to games, and even if I get to later in the playoffs, it won’t be like at home where I have my 1995 Stanley Cup championship era pom pom and my 1995 We Want the Cup Towel and my hat of 50 pins with the ’94 Rangers cup upside down since the day it was given to me. That stuff means too much to me for it to have beer spilled all over it.

But they won Game 5 when I was listening on my Ipod, so I charged it up and put the fan on. The problem is that it’s 30 secs. too slow, so before the Devils score I’ve gotten texted about it and saw it on both blogs.

in NCAA’s, even the puck going off your foot can result in a call back (found that out the hard way- not that I’m playing, just a fan). Which is rather annoying, I’ll live with the direct kicking motion thing, even if it means a goal here.

That was a HORRIBLE call

You can’t lift an opponent’s stick any more!!! WHAT THE MCF%#K!

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 28, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

phew

that could have been ugly.

now how about the refs stop giving two penalties for the Devils for everyone one penalty the Canes get scored on.

by alslammerz on Apr 28, 2009 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

make that 3 penalties to the Devils for every one PP goal

the canes don’t need a PP goal to even things out.

Sherri Ross is not happy.

the pk looks good lets hope we don’t see any more of it

by cjboyd on Apr 28, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

another kill, unless there's been a penalty in the time delay

good job by the pk, let’s hope they don’t have to prove it again.

and maybe we can get a PP now?

Patch him up and get him back out there.

Let’s get Greenie, Rolston, and Clarkie all out there for a PP goal.

Sherri Ross says it should be a 5 for intent, and Matt claims it was revenge for the Parise rough.

that’s why I said I was glad to have him back

by alslammerz on Apr 28, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

good, hopefully we get another one

it’s times like this I miss the trap and the Old NHL where we’d just sit back and ice the puck for 20 min.

it won’t work now, but back in the day, I had so much more confidence in it and in a 1 goal lead in general.

by alslammerz on Apr 28, 2009 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

this is gonna be a tense 20 min for sure we gotta keep the pressure on and get another goal

by cjboyd on Apr 28, 2009 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

the canes

played the trap in game 6…it worked for them

by been there, hoisted that!! on Apr 28, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

true

but it wasn’t the kind where the team would just ice it or fire into the stands like the old Devils.

I miss those rules.

wow great game so far

by cjboyd on Apr 28, 2009 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

by R_Adragna on Apr 28, 2009 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

extra incentive for me to root for the Devs

I’d rather my 2nd round tix here in Boston be B’s-Pens then B’s-Canes.

Both because I’d rather the matchup and because it means the Devs won.

by been there, hoisted that!! on Apr 28, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually I was kinda hoping it was B’s-Rags so I could see Thomas or Lucic kill Avery but I’ll take a battle of the black and gold.

I hate the Hurricanes, I’d rather not see them again. I’d rather be scouting the potential conference final opponents.

not liking the scrambling I am hearing

can we play this game down their end a bit?

nope, we’ll take a penalty.

I got what you meant

although it works the first time if that was in response to “can we play this game down their end a bit?”

we’ll just pretend the first was for the play down the other end, the second for the bad karma.

people step up and throw surprising hits.

by alslammerz on Apr 28, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

don't say that at Fire and Ice

there’s a large anti-Mottau contingent.

by alslammerz on Apr 28, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

oh he can

the people that hate him there ignore that and attack anyone supporting him.

I for one like Mottau.

by alslammerz on Apr 28, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t understand the anti-Mottau sentiment. I find him to be very useful. What’s the beef about?

I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!

by R_Adragna on Apr 28, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually don't know

but they wanted him hung from the rafters after the second goal. and it wasn’t for the mistake, the mistake, they said, was just another typical Mottau moment according to them.

I still remember the beauty play on Game 1 so I’m a big Mottau fan.

This has to be one of the most painful

Losses in my entire time as a Devils’ fan. They should have won this series. They really should have. The only game where they weren’t the better team was Game 6. Even tonight, the Devils were much better. But two bad goals by Marty cost the team this series.

And he’s running short on years at this point. I just want him to win one more Cup. But he can’t do that if he’s going to allow some horrid goals.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Apr 28, 2009 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

game over

I am speechless I was ready to pop the cork and then the biggest goalie choke in NHL history took place. A whole season gone in 2 minutes. Makes you kind of wish Clemmenson was in there…

Here is hoping that both Mike Mottau and Niclas Havelid are nowhere on the roster when the puck drops in next years opener.

I FEEL

bitter in my mouth, sick to my stomach, images of lossing the lead and the game keeps playing in my head over again and over again. I don’t know if i can get over this, or the team. mannn. i don’t know what to do?

by NYYEastcosterNJD on Apr 28, 2009 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

Disappointed....

But I’ll get over it. I’ve always had a rather quick rebound rate. If the Devils had played the last three minutes of tonight’s game the way the played the first fifty-seven, I think they could have won this game. The team seemed to feel as though they already had this one in the books. They let up at the precise moment they should have most weary and Carolina, who were just waiting for the Devils to let their game slide, took advantage of it with the equalising goal, which caught the Devils so off guard they gave up the eventual game winner less than one minute later. It’s a disappointing end to an otherwise amazing season and they have no one to blame for it but themselves. The Hurricanes deserve to move on to the second round if only because they followed the long standing hockey maxim of playing from the moment the first puck drops to the final buzzer. That said, Go Bruins and Go Pens.

Recap is up

Thanks for the comments. You rule.

Let me tell you that this was way worse to see live than it was on TV.

I blame the whole Devils team for losing focus; but we can agree to disagree. We certainly have the time to do so. (And judging from the comments, it doesn’t appear you’ll like who I may be thinking of for Devil of April 2009)

Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
