"Right now I’m the best (candidate)," Sutter said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

"All the best coaches in the league are under contract. I think there are three guys (in that group) who are excellent. I won’t tell you who they are. And I’m fourth."

As reported by the NHL, GM Darryl Sutter makes a statement at a news conference regarding the coaching situation in Calgary. The statement: Hey, why not me?

Why not Darryl? It's more feasible than Brent at this point!

my first thought after hearing this is that he’s going to take control for a year and then if it doesn’t work out brent will be out of contract (i believe at least) and take over the coaching role there.

Interesting and possible

Would Darryl last as a GM if it doesn’t work out? I would have to imagine he’s on thin ice for the on-ice results. Though, if it works well, wouldn’t Darryl end up remaining as coach? It’s a risky move but it’s possible.
