I guess all of what you said about Red Deer and your family was a lie, huh? Et tu, Sutter?

What I don't get is where is Lou? Has he given permission to Calgary? If he hasn't, why should he?

Per this piece on ESPN.com

It seems that Lou gave permission to Sutter’s brother (the GM) to make this happen. Cannot say I understand any of this. Classy stuff by Lou to let the deserved vindictiveness not come into play. Man, I’d love to see the reaction of The Rock next time he (Brent) comes into town now.

Class and $4.00 will take you from Exit 10 to Exit 16W on the Turnpike.

So basically Sutter just set a wonderful precedent for a coach wanting to get out of a contract. Complain about something (missing family, missing junior team) despite knowing it to be an issue going into the contract, earn sympathy to resign, and then sign on with someone other team not even a month later.

Sutter, I think, will be persona non grata among New Jersey fans – and he deserves all the vitrol.

Why is Lou even giving him permission to see the Flames??? He lied to him and complaine about his family. He wasn’t homesick he just wanted to be with his brother. What a loser, quitter, trader, and a Liar. Man I can’t wait for the boo birds when Calgary comes to NJ next season.

The piece on ESPN cites TSN, which implies that Lamoriello would have had to have given permission. It does not say definitively that permission was granted.

I’m no conspiracy theorist, but I find it hard to believe that Lou just let him walk. If he did, he did, but I want to see how the story unfolds.

sutter

my guess is that lou has already gotten a 3rd or 4th round draft pick for permitting the flames to talk to sutter, all of which will be disclosed when sutter is announced as coach of that team

Wow what a trader. I thought Brent was a better person than that but he proved New Jersey wrong.

One word: HYPOCRITE! He’s gonna get an earful when he comes back to Newark, whether or not he makes a valid reason behind his decision.

I would like to suggest a banner/sign that reads: We don’t quit on the Devils like Sutter. Or a big picture of Sutter with a Pinocchio nose.

Basically, I’m fantasizing of fans ripping off soccer supporters groups to best display our justified displeasure of Brent Sutter.

You know what makes this feel worse? Brent could have just up and “resigned to be closer to his family and junior team” about a month ago, giving Lou more time to get a head coach.

Compensation

I don’t think Lou would have let Sutter talk and sign with Calgary unless they agreed upon some for of compensation beforehand with Darryl Sutter. And while this may not be the Blues this time around, I think Lou has a history of making sure he gets fairly compensated. Or at the very least hopefully all this mystery means that Lou has something up his sleeve. I just don’t see Lou allowing Sutter to set this sort of precedent without there being some sort of repercussions or something agreed upon beforehand. Forget how bad this makes Sutter look… If Lou just let’s Sutter go and gets nothing at all in return for the way it went down then it looks bad on the organization and honestly I think Louis too shrewd to allow something like that to happen.

So until there’s an official press conference and more details about this story come forwards I’m going to go about my business and delude myself that this “hold up” has something to do with there being some truth to Phaneuf being on the block, the Devils being interested and that magic word of “compensation”.

As I understand it...

Unfortunately, Devils won’t get any compensation since Sutter resigned on its own. If the Flames were to talk to Sutter and get him while he was actively the coach of the Devils, then there would be compensation due to them.

I would like to think Lou is making a deal of some sort to give his blessing to let Brent go to Calgary so he can be away from his family and junior team in a place geographically closer to both.

But you do have the right idea, let’s wait until there’s something official.

Compensation

John-I thought the way Gulitti had posted it I thought that compensation was available if it was negotiated before the Devs actually allowed Sutter to talk to the Flames:

According to NHL bylaws, once a team grants permission to another team to speak to a coach that is under contract, there is no compenstion involved. The coach is free of his contractual obligations. The team can try to entice the other team (the Devils) to grant them permission, however, by offering compensation.

In other words, if the Flames were to ask permission to speak with Sutter and Lamoriello granted it, Sutter would be free from his contractual obligations to the Devils (as far as the Flames are concerned) and the Flames would not have to give up compensation to hire him. If Sutter didn’t become the Flames’ coach after that, he would still be under contract with the Devils and any other team wishing to hire him would have to seek permission from them first.

So as long as Lou asked for a 3/4th rounder in advance, which I can’t see why he wouldn’t the Devils should get something back

What about Dion Phaneuf??? Maybe he can come here in a deal. I know its unlikely but I just want to think about that for a while….

by LetsGoDevils on Jun 21, 2009 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

Don’t think too long, it’ll never happen unless Darryl Sutter wants to lose his job as quick as possible.

In fact, why are you thinking about it? There’s no hint that it could or would happen.

Yeah thats what I thought.

by LetsGoDevils on Jun 21, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

What really annoys me the most about this is the timing. Brent resigned after taking his sweet time making up his mind, leaving the team with less time to find a new coach before free agency. Then less than a month later, he joins a different team. That doesn’t sit well with me. Coaches are under contract too; imagine if a player tried to do that.

One more useless post brought to you

by Saugus on Jun 21, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

I agree. I mean if you want to go to another team wait it out another year when your contract is up. He had to lie about missing his family which is wrong by the way so he can just go to Calgary. He should’ve coached another year and then told Lou that he wants to be with his brother. It’s the right thing to do instead of lying to people just to get to coach somewhere else. Now we don’t have enough time to get a head coach by the draft and it hurt big time if we don’t have one by July 1st. Who wants to come to a team who loses coaches like there’s no tomorrow?
Thanks goes to Brent Sutter on this one………….
