Devils at the 2009 NHL Draft: Rounds 2-7 Open Thread
Just like yesterday, this is an open thread for Rounds 2-7 of the NHL Draft. You can talk about anything related to the NHL Draft.
- Talk about the Devils' pick, Jacob Josefson. I put my thoughts and a quick overview of that player here. I really, really like the selection. More importantly, so does Lou!
- Talk about all the trading of picks so far by teams. Seriously, just look at the Islanders. And how about that 26th overall pick that seemingly kept changing hands before ending up with Anahem?
- Talk about the other selections that happened, like Louis Leblanc being hailed by the fans when selected to Montreal or the Rangers making a reach with Chris Kreider or how Magnus Paajvari-Svensson dropped and so forth.
- Talk about who you'd like to see in the second round - no, I don't think Landon Ferraro will be available for NJ at 54th overall. And if he is, well, dang, what went wrong?
- Talk about this picture Jim Schmeideberg sent me, before the Draft. Thanks, Jim! Caption it, if you'd like:
My guess: Lou's telling Pierre McGuire that Big Body Presence™ is not a replacement for having a big heart.
Time: 10 AM EST
TV: NHL Network. UPDATE: INTERNET COVERAGE: NHL.com's Livewire will be doing Rounds 2-7. Using the internet for streaming video/audio? AMAZING! Seriously, that's the best plan B if you don't have the network.
If you don't have a TV, go to NHL.com and follow the draft tracker. I will do my best to find info on the Devils' selections as they happen and put up a new post when I have more than just a little something. This post will be on the front page; but the picks will go ahead of it. So feel free to "rec" this to keep it at the top of the FanPost section.
Please keep all comments clean, please don't post anything disrespectful or illegal, and please keep it all related to the NHL Draft. Best comments will be posted elsewhere at a later date. Enjoy yourselves and enjoy the second and final day of the 2009 NHL Draft!

TRADE #1
Florida gets: Jordan Leopold & 67th overall pick (Calgary’s third?)
Calgary gets: Jay Bouwemeester
Well, the Flames are looking to sign Jay-Bo. Isles are up to pick 31st overall now.

Can the Flames afford to have J-Bo and Phaneuf on the same roster? Or does this just further speculation that Phaneuf is being shopped
Perhaps. The trade just gives Calgary a crack at him?

No, wait,
he’s NOT Martin’s kid. HE’s the son of Mark Gelinas, a baseball player

I don’t really know to much about Gelinas but he was projected in a few mock drafts as a 1st rounder. quick read on his profile and he sounds promising, needs to build out his frame.
Post up on Gelinas
It’s on the front page. Yeah, he’s a project – needs to play more physical, just needs to keep working, but there’s a lot of promise in the player. Coach in Lewiston is high on him.

OK Islanders selected two 6'5" goalies in successive rounds
Seriously.
By the way, Chicago’s SBN Mock draft pick just went to Montreal, 65th overall.

Devils select in third round...
Alexander Urbom, defenseman for Djurgarden!

OK Eliteprospects is down
So far this is all I have on Urbow, from Hockey’s Future’s profile:
A big and strong player. Urbom is more of a stay-at-home defenseman that likes to play physical and usually has good timing in his hits. Positioning is good. Leads the team with his solid play in the defensive zone. Contributed offensively to some extent in the Swedish juniors, but is likely to become more of a shut-down guy. Offensive smarts and technical skills are fairly average.

OK, no separate posts for 3rd round on
UNLESS I can find more than one thing about the player. I’ll have a round up on Monday for this.
HERE is a profile page at Eliteprospects which has Urbow’s stats and a scouting profile that is word-for-word from Hockey’s Future. Who ripped off who? Or was it the same writer at both sites? I’m not interested in finding out, but hey, shut-down defenseman is a good prospect to have. Got to like his size and physical play.

Devils select in the sixth round...
Another forward, but he’s tall at 6’4", weighing 197 pounds, from Shawinigan, it’s left winger Ashton Bernard

Upon quick reflection, let me sum up this pick.
The Devils just drafted another Pierre-Luc Leblond-Latourneau. I’m…confused? I mean, if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out; but then I thought PLLL wouldn’t make it and, well, uh, he’s here.

115th ranked NA skater by CSS
Well, he was ranked – unlike Rodwell and Bernard, I believe.
He’s very young, he’ll turn 18 on Sept. 14, right before this year’s cutoff date if I recall correctly. Put up 4 goals and 12 assists in rookie year.
Uh…that’s all I can find right now?
Mr. Irrelevant is Petteri Simila
