I plan on putting together a quick overview of all of these guys on Monday.  It's been a fairly beautiful Saturday in New Jersey and it may or may not be that away tomorrow, so I think such a thing could be useful.  Just something where you learn what you need to know about each selection and why you may like the pick.

Gulitti has this quote from Lou about how he feels about the Devils' results at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft today:

"We were fortunate that they [the defensemen],[were] available and they have size and strength, but also mobility," Lamoriello said. "We feel pretty good about today. It was a very, very productive day. We added depth at the blue line and also the three forwards that we got they all bring different dimensions."

Combined with what he said yesterday about Josefson, I think it's fair to say that Lou's pleased with who the Devils selected at the NHL Draft. (Aside: Chere has the rationale as to why no goalies were taken by New Jersey. Because I know someone will ask, here's your answer in advance!)

But right now I want to know is how you feel about the Devils' job at the 2009 NHL Draft? It's time for you to have your say!  Yes, you can't properly judge a draft class until years later.  But I want to know your gut reaction on how the Devils did at the 2009 NHL Draft - regardless of how much or how little you know about the selections.  If you want to give a reason on why you feel what you feel, please leave a comment.  All the same, please vote in this poll.

Poll
How do you think the Devils did at the 2009 NHL Draft?
Excellent. I'm really looking forward to how everyone will develop.
51 votes
Good. I'm not sold on every pick, but for the most part, I think the Devils did a good job.
97 votes
Average. I think the Devils could have made smarter selections later on in the draft.
12 votes
Poor. The Devils did well taking Josefson, but I can't say I like the other selections.
4 votes
Awful. Just a bad draft all around! I don't like any of these selections!

Loved all the picks

Really wanted Stefan Elliot, and wished we moved up in the 2nd to get him, but besides that after reading the summarys on all the players we picked I think they did a good job of stacking their blue line for the future. I think in the new NHL it’s important to not have to rely on free agent’s for defense.

True. Salary cap space is not as prevelant as you think. You may not want to hear it, but Mike Mottau and up until this season Johnny Oduya provided play well above their meager salaries (we can quibble about how much above Mottau was, but my point’s the same).

In regards to Goalies

If Lou said that the one goalie they really wanted was no longer available, does this really mean that the goalie well in this year’s draft was dryer than the Sahara?

2009 was not a strong year for goalies. Most draft years there’s at least one goalie who’s touted as worthy of a first round pick; but not this year, apparently.

There was a brief run on goalies in the middle of the third round. Historically, based on what daoust had at PPP, drafting goalies is like shooting in the dark apparently, so I’m not too worried that the Devils come out of this without a netminder.

Thanks for that.

And just out of curiousity, who was the one goalie that the Devs had their eyes on?

I really don’t know, I’m passing on what Chere had…maybe he knows?

I mean, Kosikinen could have been it because A) he’s not a 18 year old prospect, you’d have a better idea of what he can do, what he can’t do, and what he could become. But given the run on goalies in the third round; it could be any of them.

If it's Kosikinen, then damn the Isles to hell!

I mean, first de Haan, and now him. What gives?

Cheer up

They took two straight goalies in this draft and gave up a ton of picks to get de Haan.

Besides, when you suck as bad as they do, the prospects drafted look a lot better – at first.
