Aftonbladet: Johnny Oduya Re-Signed by NJ Devils? UPDATE: Lou Says "Nothing Done Yet"

While reading up at Gulitti's Fire and Ice, a commenter, elia, posted this news story by Tomas Ras of Aftonbladet, one of Sweden's biggest news papers.   Gulitti is looking to confirm this, who knows if he'll have anything today - but he says it does roughly translate to about $3 million/year.  I normally don't do something like this. However, it's not like this is some random, no-name, no-credibility site breaking this - it's Aftonbladet, one of Sweden's biggest sources for news.

Here's the article in it's original language.  The following is a translation from Google.

Oduya extends with Devils
- And receive multi-million lift

MONTREAL. Johnny Oduya stops in New Jersey Devils.

A contract extension will be published shortly.

Oduya highlights salary from 4.7 million to about 24 million.

27-year-old Johnny Oduya was a late Bloomer and it was not until last winter that he got his breakthrough in the NHL. But now he is ranked as one of the hottest slopes in the upcoming free agent market. But it will not Oduya to reach. He has negotiated with New Jersey Devils over the last two weeks, and soon becomes a new contract done.

It is worth just over 24 million per year and provides Oduya a hefty wage.

Last season he earned 4.7 million, but was then sharply during paid given that he sometimes played over 20 minutes per match in the New Jersey Devils.
Tomas Ros

Clumsy translation aside, the important matter is that Oduya is about to be re-signed, becoming official on July 1, of course.

As far as the amount of this reported extension, 24 million kronor works out to $3,067,308.25 according to a conversion at XE.com; so I can see it ending up at $3 or $3.1 million/year.  Back in May, writing about his free agent status and why the Devils should keep him, I was concerned someone would throw $4 million/year or more at him; and I even suggested that $3.5 million/year would be necessary for Oduya to stay.   While Ros does not mention how long the deal will be; his reporting of a $3 million/year contract is definitely worth it for Oduya and it's definitely good news for the Devils going into the free agency portion of this offseason.

I will update this when I see confirmation elsewhere (e.g. Gulitti, Chere, other news sites, etc.). If this does not turn out to be true, I will also update it accordingly.

UNFORTUNATE UPDATE: Gulitti got in touch with Lou today and, well, Lou put it very succinctly:

Well, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said he was aware of the reports too and did not confirm either.

"No, there is nothing ofificial," he said.

When I asked if "nothing official" meant that the sides had agreed to deal, but it just had not been signed and registered yet or anything like that, he said, "No. There is nothing that has been done."

That said, it is clear that there have been talks between the Devils and Oduya. Lamoriello would not speculate, however, when I asked him whether Oduya would be re-signed before he can become an unrestricted free agent at noon on Wednesday.

Truth be told, I don't think Aftonbladet would report anything based on nothing.  And Lou is notorious for revealing as little as possible.  Then again, Lou would know better than anyone else whether there is a deal in place; and he just told Gulitti straight up that nothing has been done. Either Lou is denying this and initial reports are true, or nothing really has been done.  We will find out later, unfortunately.  I apologize for getting your hopes up (truth be told, I was hoping it'd be confirmed too.)

oduya

“Sometimes we have to make the decision to move on. We would love to keep Brian Gionta, but we have to be very careful [with the cap]. Johnny Oduya would be a priority because of his age; he’s a 27-year-old defenseman who’s getting better and better. Brian [Gionta] is by no means out of the picture. He’s been a Devil his whole career, that’s the toughest part of it. Same as John Madden. But these have to be organizational decisions.”

Lamoriello also indicated he has interested in bringing back Shanahan, if possible. “We’re going to talk to Brendan,” he said.

the above was on the fire and ice blog yesterday and i can’t imagine lou saying such things, particularly about oduya unless it were already agreed to, lou wouldn’t want to look foolish and he would if the deal were not already in place…i also take this to mean that gionta and probably madden are gone, so i would assume that rolston would move up to the second line…hopefully they’ll get a playmaking center for that line…i wouldn’t expect lou to make any other significant moves, he’ll want to save the cap space for a (1) a trade deadline move, (2) the cap will go down next year and (3) paul martin will be a UFA after next season?…any comments?

You mean Rolston will be put on the first line. Gionta was on the first line with Elias and Zubrus hopefully we get a better center this offseason.

well, i guess if you put it that way, yes, it is just that i had thought of parise, zajac and langenbrunner as the first line cause i thought they were the best line we had all season

Your right because Zach Travis and Jamie were the best line but Sutter didn’t put them on the first line because of the defensive pairings the other team matched up against.

NICE

I really hope the Oduya report is true, he is justifiably priority #1 this offseason, and as long as we get him extended I can live with whatever happens to Gionta and Madden.

Bad news everyone.

Gulitti asked Lou and Lou basically says “no.” Post is updated accordingly.

Uhhhhh there goes a good day… We better get him signed quick other teams are interested. I like the 3 million a year contract. Thought it would be around 4 million. Also, it is offtopic but since Shanahan wants to play another season I think we should sign him. He brings leadership, powerplay points, and has a great shot. Sign Oduya and Shanny!!!!!!

by LetsGoDevils on Jun 28, 2009 7:45 PM EDT reply actions

I’d like to keep madden as a 3rd choice behind these 2. If unfortunately that doesnt happen I think the Devils should bring a player up from lowell.

Oduya, Shanny, Rupp & Gionta

Well that stinks that there’s nothing official regarding Oduya, he should be a priority for sure. Shanahan should be a keeper as well as he does offer leadership and can still put the puck in the net. Rupp is underestimated as a player and we should keep him for his size and toughness. He knows he’s not the most talented player on the Devils but he plays his roles well and is a professional. If Gionta goes and we do re-sign Oduya, we should definitely be looking at other options as far as another scoring forward/center. Even if the salary cap goes down next year, bring in someone on a 1-year contract who will get us anywhere between 20-25 goals. In other words, I hope that with the re-signing of Shanny, Oduya and Rupp, we should at least consider 1 “significant” move, whether it be on the forward side of the puck or on D. There’s plenty to pick from in this upcoming free agency and we shouldn’t let the opportunity pass us by. By the way, what about a backup netminder? Plenty to pick from soon.

Rupp

why would we sign Rupp when we just signed Leblond to be our tough guy. Plus, Rupp is getting older and slowing down. I think Leblond is Rupp’s replacement. Although I think we should sign Shanahan and Oduya. Leave some money on the table for other free agents.

by LetsGoDevils on Jun 29, 2009 9:22 AM EDT reply actions

Rupp compared to leblond

First off its not like rupp is going to ask for a lot of money. He has more hockey skill than leblond has and can still do the dirty work by fighting and checking. I would like to see him resign and develop into a power forward type role. Leblond is like cam Jansen in my opinion, no hockey skill what so ever and is just here to check and get 5 minute majors, i dont see any use for him when we can resign rupp who can stick up for his players and put some goals in the net when used right(not how sutter used him). I hope lou resigns rupp.

by NJD4life on Jun 29, 2009 10:35 AM EDT reply actions

Power Forward????

How can you expect Rupp to be a power forward???? He is a fighter and an instigator. Why woud you give him 1 or 2 million when you have a just signed Leblond to a contract. There is no need for we to keep Rupp. We have Clarkson and Leblond. It was like signing Holik last season giving him 2.5 million. Rupp is just going to retire next season. Lou get RID of him. It would be stupid to keep him.

by LetsGoDevils on Jun 29, 2009 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

My point exactly

NJD4life just echoed my thoughts precisely. Is Longname Leblond going to be an Oliwa-type player, or a Randy McKay type of player? We have some serious holes that need to be filled and this is just one example. Now that Pronger’s on the Flyers, we’re going to need some more toughness than we had last year and some players who are big and not afraid to get in front of Emery.

by i4ni on Jun 29, 2009 12:23 PM EDT reply actions

Lundqvist too

What about Lundqvist too???? It seems we never bump into him like every Ranger player does to Marty. I’m sick of it and hopefully we do get in front of him all the time.

Goalie interference isn't a wise tactic

Unless the goal is to take stupid and avoidable minor penalties.

Back to the larger subject, one of Sutter’s tendencies was to have a “floating” screen. Players wouldn’t be set up in front like, say, Tomas Holmstrom does for Detroit. They’d go across the slot, looking for space, and when the puck does move to the back do they get in front. I don’t think it was very effective though; though I think the Devils could benefit of a mix of both – keep the opposition guessing that way.

Sutter

Well i think if rupp was put in front of the net to set a screen and get deflections he would be effective. He doesn’t have the best set of hands to score any other way expect a once in a lifetime shot like the one he had against the penguins. Sutters system failed rupp and he deserves another chance.
