Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

I guess the Rangers are going to push for Heatley or Gaborik or some other big-name, big-dollar UFA now. The NY Rangers have essentially traded away Scott Gomez for Montreal's Chris Higgins and some prospects (Ryan MacDonagh?). Full details at the link.

In my quick opinion, the Rangers are clearly making space for a future move - and naturally they trade the one $7 million dollar player who wasn't totally awful. On the Montreal aside, I guess Saku Koivu just became available and any thought to Vincent Lecavalier becoming a Hab just died for at least another season. Amazingly no picks are involved and this could turn out bad for either side.

gomez

i’ll bet he’ll be truly unhappy in montreal, where his every game, every period, every shift will be placed under a microscope and dissected…every game he doesn’t show up and give a major league effort the fans will be all over him

Habs fans are hoping...

Peep this, so they give up a native NYer to NY in return for a guy who doesn’t deserve the money he gets. They also gave away (IMHO) 2 prospects (though one is KHL bound Valentenko) for nothing.

My lightbulb is that the Lightening don;t want to pay out Vinny money for a centre, but they wanted more in return if they were going to trade him away. With MTL now having Gomez – past proven point getter, and less money than Vinny…. there could be still hope that LeCavallier is wearing the Bleu, Blanc et rouge come next week.

Crazy thoughts?

I doubt that Lecavalier will end up in Montreal unless A) Tampa Bay wants Gomez for…some reason (it’d be a downgrade for the Bolts at center) and B) Montreal wants a bigger hit on their cap ($10 million)

I would laugh if the Rangers don’t get Heatley or Gaborik. Gave away Gomez for nothing.
We’ll see as it turns out.

Nothing!?? His contract was a huge albatross around their necks and he clicked with no one on the team. Even if the Rangers don’t get Heatly or Gaborik… two risky players for the money ,Sather managed to do what everyone thought was unthinkable in getting rid of Gomez’ ridiculous contract forget who they got back, that’s totally inconsequential here.

Yes, in terms of dumping salary, this trade did the trick.

Problem is that out of Redden, Drury, and Gomez, Gomez was the one who performed the best. And now the Rangers have to snag a #1 center who can actually be an offensive threat. The Rangers were poor on offense last season and they almost have to go after a big signing to address that.
