2009 NHL Free Agency: Open Thread for Devils & NHL
This is a (mighty) open thread where you can discuss all the non-Devils related trades and signings, as well as your thoughts about what's going on! Offer your feelings about what the Devils should do. Or just laugh at whatever team makes a stupid overpayment for a player. As always, the rules apply.
Put all your breaking news here - just make sure you link to a source that says this. TSN.ca is a source, the team's site is a source, a major news site is a source, etc. HockeyBuzz or a message board post isn't a source.
I'll be live on Twitter at well - jkfischer, follow me for immediate and off-the-cuff light commentry about, well, anything. But I highly recommend following the following actual NHL insiders and reporters like: Darren Dreger, Craig Custance, and Pierre LeBrun.
For real-time links to articles, Tibbs put up two lists on his site for that. I tried to get them to work here, but no dice. So go here for real-time Devils articles and go here for real-time NHL articles. He did a good job getting these together on short notice, so check it out and hopefully it'll work well. If it doesn't, hey, we'll get the important stuff through somehow.

Sedins have agreed to 5 year extension and will stay with the Canucks. log on to www.tsn.ca
Well, there goes the best center from the market! I suppose this will keep the Sedins in Vancouver and it’s not a bad move – they’ve done quite well for the team up top. And it’s for less money than I’d think.
Fun related question: Who will be the top center for the Rangers?

I’m surprised. I thought for sure Brian Burke was going to poach his Swedish babies from the Canucks during free agency. But apparently Vancouver was willing to not only shell out the big bucks for the twins, but stick that critical no-move clause into their contracts, which is something they were adamant about having. And just as an aside, could you imagine how weird it would be, in any other profession, for a grown man in his mid-to-late twenties to turn down a multi-million dollar job offer unless his twin brother was offered one as well? I mean, it’s still weird that it is happening in hockey, but I couldn’t imagine a similar scenario occuring in any other professional sport. The Sedins creep me out a little bit. They’re like the red-haired Swedish hockey player version of the Olsen twins. They also give new meaning to the phrase ‘time to cut the cord.’
But tell us how you really feel.
I think it’s pretty clear that the Sedins want to stay in Vancouver and the two have, well, innate chemistry with each other on the ice, which is to the Canucks’ benefit. It isn’t a common occurrence, you’re right; but you can’t deny how effective they have been.
Also, the Sedin’s actually eat and are in shape.

No doubt about it. In the Western Conference semifinals the Sedins seemed to be the only two players on the Canucks that seemed to understand that they couldn’t win without scoring into the other team’s net. And their on-ice chemistry is, as you said, simply astounding at times. Both seem to instinctively know where the other one is at all times without having to look – perhaps lending some credence to that crazy theory twins are somehow mentally linked (though as a twin myself, I have some doubt about that).
Hey, TSN has a free agent tracker
It’s useful and sortable, the default is by date and time. Good to see who signed when.
Also, craziness is imminent.

I struggle to understand a lot of tradespeak… what does “future considerations” entail?
For instance, the Devils get Walter and future considerations from the New York Islanders in exchange for the rights to center Tony Romano.
I’d have to look it up, but usually it isn’t something significant.

Apparently NHL Live reported he signed with Tampa Bay. Will follow up with confirmation later.

If Romano does good with the Islanders the Devils get a better pick. if Romano does bad the Devils get a later pick in the draft. I think that is how it works.

I think the Wings

TB at it again.
It’s apparent that they learned nothing from last season’s F-up. And people talk about teams like Phoenix and Nashville in a negative light. They should focus on the Lightning and how much of a decline they’re in.
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!
I know, right? When the owners of a franchise call in Gary Bettman to mediate their marriage counseling, you kind of get the feeling that these people have no idea what the hell they are doing. And while pissing away that much money on such a lengthy contract seems ridiculously short-sighted and is liable to blow up in Tampa Bay’s collective face sometime in the forseeable future, I think they may have brought in Ohlund to play the role of the older, veteran defenseman with experience playing on the top two defensive pairings to Viktor Hedman’s rookie superstar. They needed to find a mentor with those credentials for Hedman because they didn’t have one on their current roster, and perhaps in Ohlund they believe they’ve filled that need. Whether or not this workes out better than the Stamkos experiment remains to be seen.
Blackhawks will make it to SC Finals and lose!

As far as Elias-Zubust-Rolston, i’m not too sure of that line man. Talk about a hit-or-miss line combo. Zubust, as much crap as he gets for his rediculous contract, works harder on the boards than Rolston, Rolston definitely needs to be on our PP more next year, i know he had the injury but i think the drama between him and Sutter hindered him along with the ankle injury.
I’m telling you, Rolston is a perfect replacement for Gionta. One of Zubrus’ assets is that he draws a lot of attention down low, which can be quite beneficial for a guy like Rolston to hang back for a big shot.

what may not be the case? us being better than philly or us getting out of the first round? I think last year we had an unfortunate end. But the end result is still the same, Devils and Philly sat on their couches come Stanley Cup Finals time.

This is getting annoying….. Lou needs to get his head out of his butt and go out and buy a defenseman or a center. We need to get out of this thing getting out in the first round. Every other team has signed a free agent. Hell even the Islanders signed someone and they’re rebuilding. C’mon Lou wake up, just hire Lemaire already the gig is up, and sign a CENTER and a DEFENSEMAN!!!!!!!

What part of free agency does not end on July 1 don't you get?
Why should Lou rush into making a deal for the sake of making a deal? Just to make news? Just so you have something to talk about? I don’t think Lemaire would be a good coach here and I’m not the only Devils fan to think that, so why should Lou go ahead and do it just because?
I’m sorry that it annoys you, but this is the nature of the business. Deals don’t automatically happen.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
In Lou We Trust - The Devils SBN Blog
Its not that.
The fact of the matter is, so many things should have been done before this day came. I get the draft is important, especially to Lou, but no free agent signings? No new coach? What was he doing all that time? Its frustrating. Then he always makes it like he has some great plan that he can’t talk about, then does nothing. At all.
That's not true!
Lou made big signings last season, for starters.
Second, a lot of these deals require all kinds of negotiation and calls and such. And with UFAs, it requires waiting for the players and their agents to make a decision (or in the case of Dany Heatley, to allow a trade)
Just because you don’t see anything but an Andy Greene re-signing doesn’t mean Lou has been doing nothing
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
In Lou We Trust - The Devils SBN Blog
Ok
Then defend the coaching situation. How many coaches are out there? Tremblay, Carbonneau, Lemaire, Maclean even… and when I mean signing free agents, what about our free agents? Its been reported that Lou didn’t talk to anyone in that time and if he did there was no sit down talks, just casual. Look I have respect for the man, I mean he’s in the Hall for a reason but the fact that he has treated his entire fan base like children in not giving an inkling of what he has planned is just disrespectful to the people that asures him a paycheck.
I agree
Lou has to keep everything to himself… He had how many weeks to find or interview a head coach? What did he do in that time? All of our free agents weren’t talked too instead of Oduya. Hopefully that won’t haunt us. I would expect to accomplish something in that time. You feel bad for John Madden and Gio who were committed to this franchise for years and they don’t even get talked too. Why are we giving Greene 1.4 million when he played half the season last year? Then he trades for some prospect from NY. You really think that is waht Devils fans want to hear about? We need a head coach not a prospect that won’t play in the NHL.
They didn’t get talked to earlier because the salary cap ceiling wasn’t announced until just this past Friday. No GM had any idea how much they have to spend. Moreover, the top priorities this offseason were trying to keep Oduya, which Lou did, and qualifying Zajac, which Lou did.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
In Lou We Trust - The Devils SBN Blog
It’s been reported? By who?
Defend the coaching situation? Easy. Lou is looking for a coach who is going to actually help the Devils going forward and right now, that’s not an easy task given that the process is being done along with the draft and free agency. It’s not something you do in a week or two. Like I said earlier, it makes no sense at all to make a deal just to say, hey, you have a deal.
I’m willing to wait for a coach if it means a good coach comes to New Jersey. In the long run, it is superior to signing just Lemaire or someone like that in the short term

I think everyone knows it doesnt end on July 1st. Lou needs to do 2 things tops to make this team a contender again. We will be 7 years removed from out last cup, last couple years we’re a 1 and done team. Coming into LAST free agency it could be argued that all we needed was a center and a defenseman. Coming into THIS free agency…again same argument. I like Lou all the same, but i’m not much of a homer and stray from kool-aid. Acutally a LOT of Dev’s fans dont want Lemaire back because they fear a return to a trap style game. “Boring” Devils hockey. I think fans, like myself, are frustrated because the needs aren’t tremendous, yet it seems we either don’t make a move, or have no money to make a move. It would be nice to take part in this crazyness that is free agency for one, instead of sitting back, signing a Rolston, or a Havelid at the deadline and ending up out in round 1 again. It’s not like this team has 8 holes to fill to get back to the Finals again. We have 2 tops, yet again…one and done? It remains to be seen. Personally, i would like to see the Devils make a splash, not an ill-advised splash as you keep cautioning us against, but a splash set on completeing this team and restoring hope that we might sneak one more Cup in before Marty rides off into the sunset as the greatest goaltender of all time. We don’t even have coach. That alone should have been done 1st, who wants to play for a team with no coach? All these things take time yes, but as we’ve seen today, time IS limited. We know it’s not all done on July 1st, but truth is, most of the good one’s are gone. And i just wish for once we’d be in on the party.
Most of the good ones are gone?

Oh yes forgot about Malholtra…. Isn’t he they guy every team wants? He is no different from Zubrus…. Can we please have a star on this team and get some media attention?? Yeah yeah yeah Parise and Brodeur but Parise had a career year last year. Oh great another goaltender gone. Which the devils desperatley need. Don’t listen to Marty any more. He kills us in the playoffs. I am sick of him playing every game of the season.

But seriously
I get that you’re not happy that the Devils aren’t getting noticed or attention. Consider this: Montreal’s getting a ton of attention for trading Gomez and signing Spacek. It’s not a good thing!
And the Devils need a backup goalie. These guys are all starters and #1a guys so far.

I know that but what kind of players do you think won’t be signed by tommorow? Will be signing Pahhlson and Skoula if we keep this up. I don’t want Lemaire as a head coach but I think Lou does. He is ruining this team’s chances by not hiring a head coach. What NHL player wants to come to an organization without a head coach? This team has never got into the second since Rafalski and Gomez left. Playmaking Center and an Offensive Defenseman. We got to the second round with them. They leave we friggin bring in Zubrus and Vishnevski to fill those roles. We need to sign a center and an offensive defenseman TODAY. I don’t want to see Zubrus on the first line next year. He doesn’t put up points. I’m sick of this team worrying about money…. For once can I hear the Devils are interested in the Sedin’s?? I have to hear the Devils acquire Havelid. Who wants to hear that kind of news? What is bringing in Bobby Holik the best we can do? C’mon Lou wake up already!!!!
I love this little angry rants because the Devils haven’t done anything now.
Centers and defensemen can be signed tomorrow. And they don’t need to be big names.

I wouldnt consider mine an angry rant, I’m just pointing out that you keep criticising our requests for some top talent, so who do YOU want to see wearing a Devils jersey? Straight up, no name droppping, just who do you want? 1-2 centers and 1-2 d-men you would consider a “good” investment. Williams not a center, dont need him; Malhotra? He’s 29 and never scored more than 35 pts. Bergeron, 29, best year: 06-07 with the Islanders, 46 pts, -4, 10 PP goals, not too shabby. Seidenberg, we already know where i stand on that. Komisarek will probably want 4.5-5 million/yr. I don’t think we can afford that unless Gionta does walk. We’re allowed to dream of blockbuster signings aren’t we, but i think we all know it doesnt happen with the Devils. I can understand “letsgodevils” frustration, but realistically, I just want us to fill the holes we have. All 2 of them.
Those would be good investments, save for Komisarek. My thoughts on those players are as follows and I still feel that way:
Williams & Malhotra (IF Madden isn’t going to return)
And if Lou is really sure he could play center again and is really sure his back is OK: Steve Sullivan.
Devils in my heart! Devils in my mind! Devils in my eyes! Devils until I die!
In Lou We Trust - The Devils SBN Blog
I agree on Koivu, I can see Williams if he produces, i’d rather let Zubrus play on the 3rd line since he’s banking right now instead of Malhotra, we won’t have the cap space to sign more than 2 free agents, so we need to make it worth it. Seidenberg i think is going to be the best value and Bergeron is nice, but i’m not sold simply because i dont think Minny used him properly under Lemaire and if we did sign Lemaire as couch, Bergeron wouldnt work here either. Of course, we would know that ahead of time if we had a coach. ;)

How can you count Parise as a second liner? Didn’t Parise play with Langenbrunner and Zajac to form the top line? Wasn’t Elias on the second line with Gionta and Zubrus? Even if Cammalleri did play on the second line with Elias and Zubrus/Rolston that would make one helluva one two punch. I don’t think you would get many complaints for the Devils signing him. My eye's are on all night.
I’m really hoping Lou will sign a new forward. We may not be able to keep Gionta or Madden. Lou please don’t choke on this! We need a good solid filler. Who could it be ??
I hear that but with Lou, you don’t hear anything till after it happens. LoL
by thatguy011071 on Jul 1, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the frustration with letting Gionta walk is now we don’t just need a center for the second line, now we need another winger for depth. Who in Lowell is going to come up to fill Gio’s roster spot. PL3 will fill Rupp’s, not that i agree with it, but i can see that. Good thing about Komi signing is it should lower Beauchamin (sp?) and Bergeron’s asking price. By losing Gio, we need to hope one of our AHL guys can contribute his 20-25 goals per year (which realistically you would expect anyway).Let’s talk line combos if anyone is still there:
Parise-Zajac-Langs
Elias- ?? -Rolston
PL3-Zubrus-Clarkson
Bergfors-Pelley-Pandolfo
Martin-Oduya
White-Greene
Salvador-Mottau
Only problem with letting Gio go, which is fine if he’s asking for a raise because he sure didnt earn one, is now we went from a small fix to have 2 solid lines and a possibly decent 3rd line, to now we need a fix to get 2 solid lines, and the 3rd and 4th we’ll have to cross our fingers. Let’s face it, we don’t have true scoring depth. Gio leaving means we’re now short on 20G, 60 PTS. I would hope Rolston could fill the spot, not to mention he should produce on the PP more next year when he’s healthy. But now we’re losing Rolston’s possible scoring presence on the 3rd line and replacing it with…? I understand we don’t need to get everyone, i know that, but by losing Gionta i feel we now have one more hole to fill as far as depth does. We need someone who can grind it out and score on the 3rd line as well, and Zubrus wont get it done, as we’ve seen he’s a great grinder typer player along the boards, good power forward but since he’s come here he hasn’t been the scoring presence we’d hoped. Maybe it’s just his line combos? I think we’ve couldve been able to do more if we hadn’t shackled ourselves with the contracts of Salvador and Zubrus. Zubrus is making more than Parise and Langs, and you have to know situations like that will only drive up the asking price of Parise in the future.
This is all true but there is a RW for depth:
Nicklas Bergfors will be given every chance to be that depth at right wing.
Rolston should replace Gionta’s goals, the third line production by Rolston could be replaced by Bergfors.

I hope he does, and i hope he succeeds, i like Bergfors. Kinds sucks letting Vrana go too. Word is he will back to the Czech Republic. I think that leg injury really screwed him, but he definitely could’ve helped. I would’ve liked to see more of him as well, he showed good chemistry with Elias. Any word if we extended Vrana an offer? Or did he truly high tail it to Europe?

We need someone to play with Patty on the 1st line and I think a big guy like Antropov who could score would really help. or Sykora who has already played wth Patty. Gio took most of the face offs, he was just as much the center as Zubrus was. I understand he is a winger, but if you look at all of his goals, most were in front of the net, where Zubrius should be playing. Very serious about Sykora, why not.
by Marty'sBetter on Jul 1, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions
No. Gionta did not take most of the faceoffs. This is pure fact that easily looked up at NHL.com’s stats page.
Last season, Gionta took 132 faceoffs. Zubrus took 923 Gionta played right wing, Zubrus largely played center.
Yes, Gionta’s goals came from in front of net – wingers can do that.
Sykora is way past his prime and wouldn’t be effective anymore.

I stand corrected then. I thought Gio took more, at least it seemed like he did becausde he is better at it than Zubie. I understand Sykora is past his prime, since his prime was when he was previously with the Devils. You can make a case that most of the guys still available that scored goals last year are past their prime. Im hearing the salary cap will be going down next year, so i think alot of these teams signing these players to these huge contracts will have issues. I think Lou has a plan, although we are getting impatient. Still want Sykora, now that Antropov is off the board. Or maybe Tanguay or Satan if we could get them cheap.
I disagree. I don’t want Satan or Sykora and I’m not big on Tanguay. For starters, none of them are centers and for another, all of them are on the downside of their careers – and it’s hitting them hard.

The thing is, as Sather has done in the past, he will throw a bunch of money at him. So much so that it will take everyone else out of the running. It amazes me that he still has a job.

koivu
i like him as a player…skilled and pretty tough + good leadershipe qualities…but he has never really won anything so i wonder if he’s what’s missing to get us going deep in the playoffs again? saw on another post somewhere lamenting vrana’s departure…at least they kept his rights but it would have been good having him compete again in camp, cause maybe seeing the light at the end of the tunnel might have gotten him over the hump? so bummer…
Bad timing on Vranas part.
Koivu never really won anything because he was in Montreal, where management (GM, coaching, etc.) has changed so much that Koivu was one of the few constants and he alone can’t will a team through a post season. It ain’t Saku’s bad that the legendary Canadiens organization has turned into just another organization. I recommend this article on Saku Koivu from Habs Eyes on the Prize and you’ll see that to the Canadiens faithful, he won their hearts.

Not exactly the pick of the litter…
But really now, Lou looks like he’s in no rush to even get a coach, let alone another center…with people like Mike Comrie & Petr Sykora sitting out there wasting away, can we grab someone to throw in the lineup already? I could at least wear my Sykora jersey again! Moreover, doesn’t Mike Comrie date Hilary Duff? Wouldn’t that sell tickets? Hey, in this economy, ya gotta be ready to try anything!
Frustrating isn’t it? I know how you feel. To bad Lou does not share our feelings on the subject. The team is definitely not better then last year.

Mike Comrie?
A player looking for over $4 million who has never topped 60 points, and last touched that amount in 2005-06? A player who’s coming off a massive 27 points in 66 games? Why not save money and get Jason Williams?
And Petr Sykora isn’t remotely a good option – as he’s not a center and he’s really declined.

Koivu, Kotalik and Afinigenov
Devs are supposedly interested in all 3. Check it out.
Doesn't count.
Just some sh—-y rumor-influenced article from a fan site. Not exactly legit.
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!
Nittiimaki to the KHL per James Mirtle.
My thoughts:
Damn, I was hoping Devils would get Nitty as a back-up. I like Weekes, but as mostly a locker room presence because the majority of his on-ice play leaves a good amount to be desired.

Backup Goalie signed
Yann Denis, exIslander, pretty decenet, actually…this is why I don’t question Lou very often. Nice little pickup, there.
I like it.
Me too
He will probably get the backup spot. Whats the point in having Weekes? Why waste a million or two? I like this kid. He is young and stood on his head with the islanders defense. Were good for the future too.
Morrison to Capitals
Wow, Yan Danis is our only signing and Pittkarainen? We did sign Oduya most importantly. I would like to get TJAc wrapped up too , id feel more comfortable then. But we do need to sign a center and a defenseman. Afinigenov, Bertuzzi, Sykora, Tanguay, Satan (wings but ill take em), Derek Morris, Dennis Seidenberg, Christian Backman.
Another player that does not want to come to Jersey. But seriously, who really knows how serious we were in the first place in trying to get him.

A career back up goal tender who played for Montreal and the Islanders.
