2009 NHL Free Agency Day 1: New Jersey Devils Recap (Updated Twice Now)
Today was the first day NHL teams can sign unrestricted and restricted free agents. Normally, there's a lot of action on the first day and while it's Wednesday evening, there are still plenty of talented players available so action continues.
The New Jersey Devils were fairly quiet today, only announcing the re-signing of Andy Greene. As I mentioned as it happened, this - along with the re-signing of Oduya - means the Devils' top 6 from most of last season will return. There are no updates on Travis Zajac.
Two Three Four Devils will definitely not return for next season. As reported by Gulitti (with quotes from Rupp and Clemmensen), Mike Rupp has signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins for 2 year deal costing $825,000 to their cap; and Scott Clemmensen has signed a 3 year deal with the Florida Panthers, costing an average of $1.2 million. Both will be missed to some degree. Rupp did score one of the Devils' most important goals in franchise history, the game winner in Game 7 against Anaheim in 2003. Moreover, Rupp's physical play and energy were welcomed. Clemmensen stepped in when Brodeur was injured and emerged as the starting goaltender, playing well above expectations and just very well in general.
However, they are and will be replaceable. I felt Rupp wasn't going to return when the Devils signed Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond about a month ago. While he's not 6'5", 220 lbs., Leblond is 6'2", 220 and can do many of the same things Rupp can on the fourth line: skate, hit, and perhaps fight with energy. As far as Clemmensen goes, I'm glad to see him get a contract elsewhere. He proved that he can definitely be a goalie at the NHL level last season. While Gulitti's report on Clemmensen revealed that most offers were for backup roles, he should be able to see much more time backing up Tomas Vokoun than he would in New Jersey. The Devils can sign one of the many other free agent goaltenders available as a back-up.
I wish both of them well in their new endeavors with their new teams. Of course, not when they are playing against New Jersey.
UPDATE: As I just posted this story, Brian Gionta has signed with Montreal for $25 million over 5 years. Gionta was important in that he proved that smaller players can not only play in the NHL, but play huge. He had no fear of physical play, did his best work in front of the net, and zipped around offensive zone. His best year came in 2005-06 with Scott Gomez at center and Patrik Elias playing a lights-out second half of the season recovering from Hepatitis A, where he set a new Devils' single-season goal scoring record with 48 goals. Gionta blossommed into the Devils' top right winger, but his goal production dipped since that 2005-06 season. His assists grew and he still played the infectious style of hockey Devils fans liked to see - but the goals weren't there. Perhaps reuniting with Gomez in Montreal will re-ignite his goal scoring ways. Hopefully, not against New Jersey, of course. All the same, best of luck to Gionta in Montreal.
UPDATE #2: About an hour later, from Gulitti, John Madden has signed with Chicago for one year, $2.75 million. I and many will miss Madden's fire on the ice. He was a checking center par excellence, not only making stops, but adept at taking that puck and moving it in the opposite direction. A former high scoring player in college and in the AHL, he morphed into a defensive center who turned out to be nearly perfect for the transition game in New Jersey. Truth be told, he's not as good now as he was a few years ago; but he definitely has plenty left in the proverbial tank and should benefit the Blackhawks.
I can sympathize with some of the frustration at the Devils not announcing any other deals. This is the first day of free agency, you see other teams making headlines, and other teams signing "name" players. But I think caution makes sense. The Devils only really need an offensive/two-way defenseman to bolster the top 4 of the blueline, a back-up goalie, and an improvement at the second line center position. Should John Madden not return, then the Devils will also need a checking center (UPDATE: Well, now they do!) Even then, there are players available to fit all these needs.
This is much better than the four moves Montreal made: trading for Scott Gomez and his mammoth contract, signing Jaroslav Spacek for more money than Johnny Oduya (seriously) and Hal Gill over a number of other defenders, and signing Mike Cammalleri for a $30 million deal. Only the last one looks good; but if Cammalleri doesn't perform, these can all be big failures in short order. UPDATE: Make it 4 out of 5 not-so-good looking deals: Brian Gionta signed with Montreal for $25 million over 5 years - at least a $1 million/year too much, in my opinion.
Or as a better example: the Rangers taking that cap space saved from Gomez and spending it on Marian Gaborik. For five years. After extensive back and hip injuries.
Yes, all those moves made headlines - that doesn't make them a good idea. I'm telling you, waiting is looking good at this point. More as it happens.

free agency
‘amen’ to everything you said, except that, IMHO their only real need is a playmaking center and we’ll just have to wait & see that that plays out…if memory serves, last year they didn’t sign rolston until most of the other ‘name’ UFAs were already signed to their new contracts

the devils will be fine will be fine
my favorite thing about the nj devils is there ability to generate great players from drafting and there minor league programs.think back to all 3 cups and try and rember that alot of our heros from all three of those times were star players we didnt even really no we had.our new prospects this season will be a surprise for the league, not that we wont get some kindda free agent but thats not really the strength of the devils anyways. we only need too be slightly above average till the trade deadline and then try and improve for a real playoff run. the late season slumps killed us.

madden
Madden has now signed with the hawks. The devils are sitting on their ass and not making any moves, this is painful for all devils fans who are still in pain from the painful game 7 defeat to the canes.
Speak for yourself.
This isn’t painful. And you’ve had over 2 months. Get away from the edge of the building.
OK, Madden’s gone, there are replacements available for checking centers.

I'm still holding out hope for Koivu
I know that he wants to play with his brother in Minnesota, but I just think he’d be a great fit in New Jersey with Elias and Rolston on one of the more prolific second lines in hockey. The Devils really desperately need that second line center.

Koivu would be a great signing.

Actually the opposite is true.
He doesn’t want to go there because his brother is becoming the leader of that team, and he said he doesn’t want to get in the way of that.
NO HE DOESN'T!!!!!
Saku already came out and said " I don’t want to sign with Mikko’s team, that is his team and I don’t want to mess up the chemistry with Minnesota."

Do you have an actual source for this, or is this a lie?

Good Job Today
I was pretty elated last year when the Devils went out and signed Brian Rolston and Bobby Holik on July 1. This year, Mr. Lamoriello’s big signing (tongue in cheek) of Andy Greene has me even more excited.
Our number one priority going into the offseason was re-upping Johnny Oduya. Lou locked him up at a reasonable salary for three years. Yesterday I thought it was a market value signing. Seeing some of the deals today and I think you could argue that Oduya took less than market value to stay in red and black. Good job there.
Furthermore, we needed to keep our depth on the blue line and resigning Andy Greene did just that. While Andy Greene isn’t the second coming of Bobby Orr, he’s 26, a great skater and a reliable 3rd pairing defenseman. He comes in at a bargain price. He’s proven that he can come in and shoulder a pretty solid workload, even if he’s been a healthy scratch for a number of games. Having a player who is ready to go at the drop of a hat is a huge plus, especially when the bumps and bruises of an 82 game season catch up with the Devils D-corp. Additionally, he’s still young. JohnnyO didn’t come into his own until that age. Perhaps Greene is also a late bloomer. Even if he never reaches Oduya’s levels, he’s still a serviceable player, especially at a cap hit of $735,000.
The departure of Brian Gionta clears the way for Brian Rolston to assume a more prominent role in the top 6. A healthy Rolston can carry much of the load that Gionta did last season. People all too quickly forget that Rolston had a serious high-ankle sprain last season and spent much of the year playing with the bottom pairings. Rolston steps up next year in a big way.
Right now we have about $11 million in cap space left. That’s a pretty nice luxury with a pretty full roster right now. It gives us options both internally, allowing some of the prospects to come into more prominent roles, and externally by allowing us to sign someone if it is a good situation.
The last order of business is re-upping RFA Travis Zajac. I’d love to see Travis inked to a 4-year deal for about $3 million a year, but I would be neither surprised nor upset to see him get an even bigger raise. We re-sign Zajac and our top line is set.
I’d also like to address the hypocrisy of Devils fans for a moment. As the Devils skidded into the playoffs (and I say this with some hesitance, as they won 4 out of the final 5), fans were calling for Brent Sutter to be fired. Then after the shocking Game 7 loss to the Hurricanes, the fire Sutter chatter only intensified. Fast forward to Sutter leaving, and people were shocked by the decision and felt betrayed. While those feelings aren’t without merit, you can’t have it both ways folks. You can’t be kicking the guy to the curb and then be upset when he leaves.
The same thing can be said for Brian Gionta. Fans were displeased with Gionta for a lack of productivity, essentially since he signed the contract paying him $4 million a year after his 48 goal season. Looking over the fact that he came off his second most productive year this season, is he really worth $5 million a year over 5 years? I say absolutely not. I’m sure Gio is a good guy and that he pays his taxes (have fun taking a 20% haircut in MTL Brian!) every year on time, but he’s not a $5 million a year player. Such a contract would cripple our cap situation for years to come, making it harder to re-sign Parise in 2 years and field a capable team. Furthermore, had Lou made the same/similar offer and Gio produced at the same levels as before how would people react? I’ll take the bait. Not well. Again, I’m sad to see Gio go, but for at that price point, I’ll pass.
Also, during the season and after the aforementioned Game 7 (forgetting for a moment that Madden wasn’t on the ice for the tying goal and that Colin White made an ill advised decision to step up on the blue line leading to the winning goal) many were saying the game had passed Madden by. While I’m sad to see him go, because he was such an integral part of the Devils, how can you be upset that he has moved on to Chicago? If the game has truly passed him by like many insist, why is a bad thing for him to go be over-the-hill in Chicago? I don’t think the game has passed him by but I also wasn’t too keen on bringing a 36 year-old, defense oriented player back at almost $3 million.
I’m sorry for the long post but seeing some of the comments from Devils fans in the past few weeks has left me befuddled. Looking forward to hearing about how prospects camp goes in a couple weeks and the start of the season. I really think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised at how the Devils perform for the 2009-2010 season. As the name of the blog suggests, In Lou We Trust.
Don't apologize
This is a well-reasoned post. Good job, Tim. Zajac should be re-upped just fine, he was qualified.

UFAs left
Almost no sound names in UFA list left!
Absolutely agree with those who are confident in what NJD system can make out of a rookie. Just to take fresh blood and add a bit of experienced to make a perfect brew. Let’s hope we’ll grow up another gios, maddogs, gomers
11 and 14
just two apparent things -
Madden’s 11 will be replaced by Koivu’s
Shanahan will return his 14 from Gionta’s
Please shut up
I am tired of hearing these fans,"why did lou not sign X’ if you have followed the team for the past few years you would see that Lou never makes big moves for free agents. If you want to see big names and no wins go watch the Rangers. Otherwise shut up. In Lou we trust.

Really because this isn’t like years before…. The Devils didn’t have to worry about filling Gionta’s place or Madden’s place. You think we can just bring up players from Lowell and they automatically fill those roles?? Yeah I know Lou doesn’t make ’ big moves’ at free agent time but this is the year to do it. The Devils need a center for Elias and Rolston and you think a guy from Lowell with help. Devils need a real offensive defenseman that is good on the PP, Corrente isn’t that guy. I wouldn’t mind Frazee as a backup. Although he’ll only play about 7 games….. Lou needs to atleast make a trade for a center or an offensive defenseman or go out and buy one.
yea the last few years we only had too worry about losing gomez, rafalski, stevens,(irreplacible) dayneko, and neids. who did replace those guys anyways.
