Official: New Jersey Devils Sign Yann Danis

Both Chere and Gulitti have the news from earlier this afternoon, the Devils signed 28 year old goaltender Yann Danis.  Here is the link to the Devils' press release on their site announcing the signing.  Danis is the first unrestricted free agent signing from outside of the Devils organization this summer.   Contract information will be included once that is known.

Danis played for the Islanders last season (as seen in the photo, of course) as back up to Joey MacDonald, who became the de facto starter when Rick DiPietro was injured.  In grading the Islanders, Dom at Lighthouse Hockey praised Danis though he kept noting he ended the season a poor note.  Well, both Danis and Joey MacDonald did, actually.   Danis did very well when he came up with the Islanders in January and February; yet he faded drastically down the stretch.  However, he was originally thought to be a #3 on the depth chart and stay on the Islanders' farm team, so it wasn't as if the expectations were high to begin with.   In the poll, the fans felt he played above expectations; and it's not as if Dom has a problem with Danis.  Just pointing out a misgiving from the season - he still named him the best goaltender from the Islanders from this past season.  Here are Danis' numbers with the Islanders from last season.

GP MIN W L T EGA GA GAA SA SV SV% SO
2008 - Yann Danis 31 1760 10 17 3 1 84 2.86 933 849 .910 2

Not awful considering he faced 30.1 shots per game on average. One interesting fact is that the Devils have seen  and seriously tested Danis recently.  Twice last season, to be precise.  The first time was in a 3-1 win against the Islanders where Danis faced 36 shots on net.   The second time was in one of the worst Devils' losses in the regular season in 08-09: a 4-0 loss. Danis faced 40 shots and stopped them all for his first shutout of the season.   He clearly did well in the second game (and helped by a terribly ineffective offensive performance that night), but he wasn't bad in the first one either from what I saw.  So my personal impressions of the goalie are good.

In my opinion, just that he's continued to work on his game despite spending so much time in the AHL and has proven himself to a degree last season makes me feel good about this signing. That Islanders fans were pleased (to a point) with how he played makes me feel even better about the signing.  From my point of view, I think that Danis can be the #2 goaltender without people hoping, pleading, and praying that he does well every time he does step on the ice.  I can be confident in Danis getting a few starts here and there as the season begins. And that's what you're looking for in a back-up keeper - the confidence that he can do a good enough job from time to time.

It's also beneficial that he's 28 and with no history of injury, those are assets as well.  If he does well, then a long term deal wouldn't be such a bad idea.  As for now, this signing fills a positional need and while the contract isn't known yet, I can't imagine it being a very significant amount of money.  Therefore, I like the signing. It can even turn out to be a, dare I say it, a shrewd deal.

But let me know what you think with this poll.  How I think it will play out for the Devils will be after the jump.

Star-divide

The Devils now have two goalies with NHL experience and I would think that Jeff Frazee will be in Lowell.  However, not everyone will agree with that. For starters, Lou doesn't.  Lou's had quotes both reported by Chere and Gulitti about multiple options and how "this hasn't closed the door" on bringing back Kevin WeekesChere has the best summary of the angle Lou is taking:

"Right now the thought process is we're still not sure what decision we're going to make with Jeff Frazee and where he's at," GM Lou Lamoriello said. "Possibly we could use Jeff and Yann that way because Jeff can go up and down. There is also still the chance of getting another goaltender."

That goalie would be Kevin Weekes, who is still an unsigned unrestricted free agent.

"Kevin Weekes is not out of the picture yet ," Lamoriello revealed. "Right now these are the two goaltenders who will be the backup to Marty. But it's not set. We have to see where we're going with other situations and, quite frankly, it comes down to money and economics."

Personally, I think Lou is trying to keep the position up for grabs.  It's clear that he's high on Frazee and would like to give him a shot if only to see how hard he'll reach for a spot.  However, in my opinion, I would have to think the depth chart is now Brodeur, Danis, and Frazee.  Brodeur is clearly the starter; Danis was a back up on Long Island and did quite well all things considered; and so Frazee would be allowed to develop further in the AHL.

As much as I like Weekes, I'm skeptical of him being in the New Jersey Devils' picture.  It doesn't make sense to add Weekes unless Weekes or Danis are willing to play in Lowell along with Frazee, and that could even cut into how much experience Frazee would get. Should the Devils need a fourth goalie as extra insurance, I don't think they need to get some one as experienced as Weekes unless he (Weekes or whoever) is willing to go down to the farm team.  Or if the Devils aren't that confident in Danis.   But I'm doubtful given how he did on an awful Islanders squad last season.   Again, I really think Danis has to be the #2 goalie right now.

Whoop diddy do! What does it all mean, Basil?

I mean come one, are we supposed to be stoked that we lost Clemmer and picked up Danis? We don’t even have a friggin coach or a 2nd line center (John don’t you dare say Zubrus, there’s not one Devil fan out there saying “Sweet, we got Zubrus as our #2 center”), but hey, at least we got a backup goalie that’s no better than the 2 we had last year.

Where’s the poll selection that says “I couldn’t care less.”

There is no “I couldn’t care less” option. If you don’t care, then don’t vote.

I’m not asking you to get excited and throw a rager of a party over the deal; but this is a signing by the Devils, it fills a need, and I want to know what the readers think. I’m sorry Lou didn’t sign someone you’d like to see.

Good signing

I like Danis because he looked good with NY and stood on his head all the time with the poor islanders defense. The new coach has to play him more and let marty sit. If Lou wants Zubov let him sign him. Whatever Lou does and likes what he did we all should like the move too.

I’m personally hesistant on Zubov because he has two big IFs to conquer to be an asset:

IF he still can bring his A game at age 38/39 and IF he is truly healthy, then Zubov would be fantastic. But I doubt he can overcome both IFs.

I’d be happy if he overcomes one IF. I would still rather Bergeron out of everybody.

i like MacDonald better but this is still in the catagory of i like the sighning.i think he could handle it if he has too play in a starting role due to injury.

Danis has the benefit os good coaching in the AHL. Unfortunately didn’t fit into the Habs plans but isn’t a bad goalie overall. I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s a poor man’s Tomas Vokoun, however, having played in the same system in Fredricton/Hamilton I see comparisons.

Give him some time. I think the Devs have other up and coming tenders so I don’t believe any of you should worry about your long term situations. He’s a decent goalie. And maybe with the Dev;‘s D being sured up I could see him being very serviceable. I don;t know if he’d pull off Clem’s stats of last year, but you’ll do fine with him.

Thanks. The only real potential goalie in the system is Frazee; but he could very well end up as a starter in years. So Danis really does add depth at goaltender.

I hope he doesn’t pull off Clemmensen’s stats completely, though, I’d like Brodeur to play at least 60 games!

Think there was any coincidence that Danis was signed soon after Niittymaki was taken?

by NJmetal15 on Jul 10, 2009 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Nah. Niittymaki can be a 1A in Tampa. Maybe.

Now if it was MacDonald…I’d still doubt it.

I think this is a solid signing. Danis’ save % and gaa are good for a backup on one of the worst teams in the league last year.

Brodeur will play his 70 games next year so I wonder more about the coach and some depth signings on forward and D. The coach situation I think is a bit concerning, as it may be impacting our ability to sign such depth players…

I’m sure Brodeur would like this signing of Danis being a Montreal native.

by Alex D. on Jul 11, 2009 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think this signing is shrewd. It is more of a dice roll. First of all, Danis allowed soft goals in his first starts for the Islanders, which drew criticism from Scott Gordon. When MacDonald was injured and the Blue Jackets claimed Dubielewicz from re-entry waivers, the Islanders had no choice but to play Danis. This is when Danis had a good run of games, as a regular starter and when there was no longer anything at stake for the team. For a moment it seemed Gordon started to like Danis, even prefer him to MacDonald, but then after MacDonald returned, Danis started to “beat himself” again by not making the necessary saves at the right times to keep his team in the game. Gordon seemed to go a little sour again. MacDonald might have had some shaky games over the season, but to me, he always seemed consistently capable of stepping in and performing at a moment’s notice unlike Danis.

To summarize, there is a significant question mark on Danis being useful as a backup who only plays sporadically as he played reliably well and even excelled for a spurt only when he played every night. The raw numbers alone are a little misleading, in my opinion. If he really were as solid as his numbers suggest, the Islanders would have quickly signed him to a one-way deal for sure.

by bearhunter on Jul 12, 2009 2:55 AM EDT reply actions

Look at MacDonald's numbers though

He had a 3.37 goals against average, a 901 save percentage, and 26 losses. Danis played in 30 games and put up a 2.86 goals against with no Islander defense in front of him, also 910 save%. MacDonald played in 40 games. With the Devils losing players like Gio and Mad Dog you don’t want to be down 3-0 to a good team. With Lou trying to get younger this was the best choice he can make for a backup goaltender.

by LetsGoDevils on Jul 12, 2009 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Numbers behind different teams

After watching them both all last season, I’m convinced Danis is the better goaltender, but…

Two caveats, though: First, MacDonald’s weaker numbers were accumulated when the Islanders were truly an injury-ravaged mess; whereas Danis got the team’s best, most cohesive efforts of the season. Second, bearhunter’s theory above about Danis’s resilience when under pressure is worth considering — like the rest of the squad, the Isles’ best part of the season were when the team had committed fully to trying out the young guys, at the expense of the (few healthy) veterans.

Just something to think about … though I ultimately thing this was a sound Lou move.

lousy pick for the Devils...

come on Lou resign Weeks already and stop with this flea market attitude of yours already. I am getting disgusted with it already we want to at least compete next year.

You don’t think the Devils can compete with Parise, Zajac, Elias, Langenbrunner, last year’s defense, and Martin Brodeur in net?

Really?

NO

Weekes can’t get the job done. When Marty went down he was the starter and he failed to do it. He gives easy goals away just look at the ones when he played Tampa this year. He just had an injury, he is aging, and the Devils want to get younger. With lou signing Danis I think it is done for the Kevin Weekes era in NJ. Why would you send down Danis when you have Frazee in goal all the time. Danis won’t play often. In my oppion I think Yann Danis will be the back-up for Brodeur.

we can compete..

We will be able to compete because of the devils system. Its just the question who is going to coach this team? And will all these young players who are replacing the players we have lost be enough to compete with the Penguins and Canes and the teams who have made themselves better. Also can we count on Marty to play a full season at his age? Their are a lot of ifs right now.. Whoever the coach is will dictate what kind of style we are going to play be it offensive or defensive. Right now I can tell you besides the Parise line we will not score many goals with this outfit we have right now..
