New Jersey Devils Prospect Development Camp Roster Announced

Rich Chere is on the ball with the list of prospects who will be in New Jersey for the Devils' prospect development camp (a.k.a. rookie camp), which will begin on Monday.

After the jump is the list Chere reported, and I went ahead and added any additional information on each player: their position, links to their stats, when they were picked, and where they played last season. a little later. (Update: It's largely done with only 2 exceptions!)  The players in bold are players I think will get long looks in preseason in September.   All draft picks were made by the Devils unless otherwise stated.

I see all of the 2009 draft picks will be there, most if not all of the 2008 draft picks, and a mix of older prospects with a dash of undrafted players.

Hmm, Ilkka Pikkarainen won't be there.  He is 28 and not really a "prospect," so I suppose training camp and preseason will be where he gets to prove his worth.

Update:  Here's a real surprise, Nicklas Bergfors isn't on this list.  I even went ahead and updated everyone and missed him completely!  Given that he's played for Lowell, a lot of Lowell Devils are on this list (11 by my count), and he's highly regarded in the organization with his offensive potential, I really wonder why he's not on this list? Did something happen to him?  Maybe it's just an oversight on the list?

As far as I know, there has been no annoucement that this prospect development camp will be open to the public, so I'm pretty sure it won't be.  And that's fine. The players and the staff should be focused on the tasks at hand in camp. Leave your thoughts on the list below.

Notes:

1. All player names re-direct to a SBN player page or to Hockey DB's player page.  For completeness' sake, I put any Hockey DB pages not in the players name as (stats) in the end.

2. Ashton Bernard was traded in the QMJHL offseason to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Here is a news article from the Cape Breton post stating as such as well as his reaction to when he was selected by the Devils.

3. Hockey DB doesn't have any stats for Gedig, so I put in his player page from the BCHL's site.

4. There are 2 players is 1 player I am not certain about:    Tyler Miller - Hockey DB links me to him playing for the Port Hope Predators in the OPJHL.  I saw a Tyler Miller getting a look from Moose Jaw in the WHL a few years back, but I don't know if it's the same guy. Anthony Felice, who I learned at Mike Ashmore's Trenton Devils blog was an emergency backup goalie for Trenton at one point, but I'm not certain from where he was called up from.  More on this later.  Update: Commenter Jersey Mike pointed out that Tyler Miller is, in fact, TJ Miller, a Devils draft pick from 2006.  Thank you, Jersey Mike.

Would be nice to see either Tedenby, Palmieri or Cormier step up and make the team. Throw Vasyunow and Zarkov in there too.

Eric Castonguay has a lot of talent he may surprise a lot of people.

hey just an absurd little thought on a completely different subject, but what about a 1 year deal with Mats Sundin as a 2nd line center??? We have cap to spare and a one year deal wouldn’t affect a dropping cap next year.

assuming of course he doesnt retire.

Given he got so much from Vancouver last season, his price would likely be still too high. I’d say not.

an article i read on yahoo suggested that given his performance last season, he might only get around 4 mill.

If that (give or take maybe 1 mill) was his price, what about that? I think it would be a great pick up. No salary cap issues with the one year deal, and it gives the devils an elite center as well.

Tyler Miller is TJ Miller

Oh! That's right. Thanks!

I’ll update the list accordingly. I stupidly forgot that TJ Miller was in the system.

OK, that leaves Anthony Felice as the only question mark.

according to TG’s blog Felice was an emergancy back up in Trenton last year

by Jersey Mike on Jul 12, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

And so did I at the end of this post.

Anthony Felice, who I learned at Mike Ashmore’s Trenton Devils blog was an emergency backup goalie for Trenton at one point, but I’m not certain from where he was called up from. More on this later.

I’d like to know where Felice played. The only Felice I can find was a third string goalie for the Brooklyn Aces and I’m really skeptical that’s the same guy.

D Brandon Burlon
LW Eric Castonguay
C Patrice Cormier
C Adam Henrique
D Tyler Miller
LW Mattias Tedenby
RW Alexander Vasyunov
RW Nick Palmieri
RW Vladimir Zharkov
RW Nathan Perkovich

IMHO, these are the players I would like to see make an impact now and in the fall. Some of them may not be ready and probably won’t be for at least another season but I would like them all to make good first impressions. I have been watching these guys and they show a lot of promise.

Eric Castonguay, had an excellent play off run last year for Trenton. He strapped the team on his back when it counted. Cormier had a great playoff as well as Palmieri and Henrique. It is always a good sign when a play shines in the playoffs, it says that the player can thrive under pressure.

I believe everyone of these players I mentioned can make an impact for the Devils, especially Tedenby and to a lesser extent, Vasyunov. I say a lesser extent with him because he has back problems and he needs to be a bit more consistent. Hockey Future rates Vasyunov higher then Zharkov but it seems Zharkov adjusted faster to the North American style of play.

I am really curious to see how Tedenby does as well. Would be awesome if he could step in this fall. Not to many players in the Devils system with his skating and skill level.

Just my two cents.
