OFFICIAL: New Jersey Devils Sign Ilkka Pikkarainen

The official site has it first and apparently the mystery player isn't Tuomas Pihlman or Teemu Laine or Alexander Korolyuk, but it's...Ilkka Pikkarainen?

"Ilkka Pikkarainen is a forward who brings size, strength and toughness to our roster," said Devils' President/CEO/General Manager Lou Lamoriello. "We welcome him back to our hockey club."

Pikkarainen, 28, re-joins the organizatin after returning to HIFK Helsinki (Fin.) for the past three seasons. In 2008-09, he recorded 24 goals and 13 assists for 37 points, and 149 penalty minutes in 54 games. He led the team in goals and penalty minutes, while tying for third in points.

Well, it's certainly a surprise! Pikkarainen has done fairly well with HIFK Helsinki in the three seasons he's been there.    If I recall correctly, and hockeydb confirms this, he's a right winger. Truth be told, I'm expecting much more than this; but hey, he's a player for the bottom two lines that the Devils may find useful. Please don't turn the comments into a bunch of complaints about how this is awful because he's not a bigger name - the Devils can still sign plenty of players.  This is just one.

I'll update when there's contract information.

Oh, one more thing...

From Gulitti’s post last night, the only hint as to the “mystery player” was that he was on the Devils’ reserve list. The Devils don’t have too many players in Europe so it was either going to be a prospect or a former prospect.

Like I said, I don’t think Lou is done.

Really?????

Wow this is the guy Lou signs???

No, this is all entirely fake and what you’re reading is nothing but a set of lies. To seek out the truth, you must sit back and think for a moment and use the power of the mind and imagination smash through the illusions and figure out what your heart and soul decides is true.

You act as if he’s the only signing.

He is!!!!

He is the only signing right now. I don’t see any news like Devils sign Koivu or Devils sign Bergeron. Do You????

Rupp's replacement?

That’s what it looks like to me… well, between him and Pierre-Luc. Can he play center?

by TNYFBG on Jul 2, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

He’s a right wing so I’m going to guess not.

Well, he's gotta play somewhere

… so help me out with what the lines/depth charts are looking like now…

1st is set with Parise, Zajac, Langenbrunner, left to right…

Rolston and Elias would presumably be on the 2nd line but are both LW and what, Zubrus at C?

Then, uh, Shanny, Ben Walter and Clarkson as the 3rd?

That leaves 2 RW for the 4th line… this guy and Pierre-Luc.

This obviously makes no sense…how would it be?

by TNYFBG on Jul 2, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Pierre-Luc is a left wing.

Here’s a stab at the forwards:
Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Elias-Zubrus-Rolston
Pandolfo-??-Clarkson
Leblond--??

Possible forwards to fight for jobs from Lowell: Bergfors, Pelley, Halischuk, Vasyunov, Zharkov, Walter

Unless we get a #2 center,

I would almost bank on Pelley being the 3rd line center.

Speaking of which..

Do you think we are starting walter right out of the gate? Is he a Madden fill in?

by Driver726 on Jul 2, 2009 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

No.

Let’s wait and see what Walter can do in training camp first.

Also: This has nothing to do with Pikkarainen.

Fans want wins and the Devils have proven over and over again that it doesn’t take big names to win, and that, in fact, big names for big money more often than not backfire or at least don’t live up to expectations.

Your pessimism is understandable, duly noted, and getting old.

Ilkka Pikkarainen and Rod Pelley

Here’s some info on Pikkarainen – back when Parise was at AHL (2005) and ranked the #1 prospect, Ilkka Pikkarainen was … ranked #20.

20. (-7) Ilkka Pikkarainen, RW, 5.0 A

Though he dropped all the way to the bottom of the top 20, Pikkarainen still had a very solid and respectable season for an Albany team that continued to struggle. His drop is more due more to talented players being added to the system more than anything. Pikkarainen showed improvement in all aspects of his game, scoring 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points in 71 games, and he still showed an antagonistic side to his game by hitting triple digits in PIM’s with 102. Pikkarainen was by far and a way one of the most consistent Rats performers throughout the season.

What you see is what you get with Pikkarainen and he likely has already peaked in terms of his NHL potential. He has great potential as a fourth line sparkplug/energy winger. Whether there is room for him this year is another question, but with a strong training camp and pre-season, Pikkarainen definitely has a chance to make an impression. He may get a chance sometime this season to crack the Devils line-up possibly as an injury fill in.

ROD PELLEY apparently is ready to return as the 4th line center – good at faceoffs, and tenacious (i.e., like John Madden, but lots younger and cheaper)

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/rod_pelley

Talent Analysis
Pelley is a tough, hard-hitting forward who excels in the faceoff circle. He plays with an edge and is fiercely competitive. Pelley’s skating ability combines power with good speed and quickness. He is strong on skates and is tough to move off of the puck. He has great on ice vision and hockey sense. He anticipates where plays are going quite well too.

One of Pelley’s best attributes is his cannon-like shot. He’s a player who also loves to shoot and has a superb wrist shot. He has a real nose for the net and is willing to pay a price in high traffic areas to make the plays.

Future
Pelley’s strong first year on the farm, combined with his steady play when up with New Jersey should earn him a long look in training camp next season. His upside isn’t fantastic, but Pelley knows what his role is and does it very effectively. Foot soilders like Pelley are the type of unsung heroes that often go unnoticed by casual observers but appreciated by teammates.

But please post links to the Pikkarainen profile from HF. Also – it’s quite old?

lineup

this is my guess, based on comments by Lou saying Pelley needs another chance (he did play 50 games or so two years ago) and Clarkson deserving more playing time:

Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Elias-Rolston-Bergfors (promoted from AHL)
Shanahan-Zubrus-Clarkson
PLL-Pelley-Pikkarainen/(Halischuk)

by Jason L on Jul 2, 2009 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

That's one thing Lou and I agree on

Clarkie needs a ton more time. He rules. HAHA He has a lot more offensive potential than I think most give him credit for. He has sweet hands in front of the net.

by Mandmeisterx on Jul 2, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Great....

Yeah thats who I would want on a line with Brian Rolston and Patrik Elias…… Rolston isn’t a center too so Lou need to go and get saku Koivu. Whole fourth line was from the minors at some point…..

by LetsGoDevils on Jul 2, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a pretty good stab at it. I think Zubrus is still the 2nd line center due to the fact that, well, he was in the spot last season. And I don’t think Bergfors comes in right away to be the 2nd line RW, but it’s not impossible.

Pando?

Is Pandolfo still in the plans? Should he be bought out?

by NJmetal15 on Jul 2, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

For the first time, yes.

According to Cap Geek’s buyout calculator, when you put it in an invalid date (like today) you get this message.

Buyouts take place between June 15 and 30 or 48 hours after salary arbitration hearings, which are held from July 20 to August 4.

So there’s still time for that. Incidentally, I used it for Pandolfo on 7/20 and it calculated that it would cost $833,333 to the Devils for the next 4 years.

isn't the deadline for buyouts up?

yes, the time is up escept as you noted, but at anytime they can put pandolfo on waivers and when no one claims him he gets assigned to lowell where he gets paid but no cap space charged for his salary as to the devils—if lou doesn’t do it this season, if the cap does go down after this season i can see this as the first way the devils would shed 2.5 million dollars for ‘10-11 season…the did this with richard matvichuk a couple of years ago as i’m sure we all remember

Bergfors

Bergfors playing w/ Elias and Rolston is good for 20 goals as a rookie. And guess what – that’s what Gio produced.

by Jason L on Jul 2, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

I would agree here

I think if you put someone with the skills of a Bergfors with those two, he could provide some goals. The issue is I want more than 20 goals. I want an improvement over Gionta in order for the Devils to take that next step.

calm down everyone.

i think as i said before the devils strength comes from there recruiting and traing of new players.this season will be no exception Bergfors, Pelley, Halischuk, Vasyunov, Zharkov, Walter these are your new players some will be star quality right away.i didnt put corrente cause i think if he comes this year it will be around the deadline but i am excited too see how he does.

Report

Scouting: A big, bold winger with some scoring touch … has good size and is more than ready to use it … a hard hitter and plays with a bit of a mean streak … does take some unnecessary penalties … has good mobility for a big player … has good hands and puck control … is strong around the crease … lacks some hockey sense … usually is not able to create changes for his team mates, only for himself … will have to work on his defensive game as well as his discipline.

Projection: Third or fourth line physical winger who can do some damage in offensive zone.

Come on Lou

You’ve gotta sign somebody already, give me a scoring center… not this garbage pick up from europe.

by devilsfan26 on Jul 2, 2009 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

You guys are amazing! Were you like this back in 99/2000 when NJ brought in Gomez, Rafalski, White & Madden and won a cup!? You realize that those guys were all from the farm or non drafted signings by Lou. Or let me guess you guys all knew back then those 4 guys were going to be pivotal and immediate impact players? If you’ve been a Devil’s fan long enough you’ll notice this is a trend of bringing in the youth… and you’ll also notice that there’s always years of misses, frustration and first-round exits before everything suddenly clicks and next thing you know we have another Cup.

Cut the team and Lou some slack already for having the sense to not sign a free agent just to sign one. Right now your chastising a bunch of kids who haven’t even touched the ice yet and shown you what they got. The Devils have a proven track record of success with bringing in their prospects. Please someone correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the Devils consistently ranked at the bottom of the prospect charts yet continually keep churning out more NHL caliber and valuable players from their farm system then anyone else besides maybe the Wings?

I can’t wait to watch you guys fall over yourself gushing about one of these rookies when they step up and act like you knew it was going to happen all along.

Don’t be Devils fans because it’s geographically convenient, be one because you love the team and the philosophy behind it! One that knows how to manage itself and put out a strong and competitive team each and every year despite what you armchair GMs complain about each and every year.

by Zelepukin on Jul 2, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

Spoken like a true fan. I have a lot of these same opinions. It’s a time where the devils need to change the guard. The only things they truly need off the free agent markets are a capable 2nd line center and a backup goalie. A good dman would be great as well but I believe it’s time the devils let some new blood try out, especially if they do well at training. Look what happened with both Parise and Zajac.

by skly27 on Jul 2, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd still like Koivu though

I’m all for bringing kids up, but we need a solid, veteran 2-line C. Plus, Rolston and Shanny aren’t going to play full seasons so there will be plenty of room for the kids to show what they’ve got. I don’t think Bergfors has shown enough potential to be set as the #2 C going in to the season.

by TNYFBG on Jul 2, 2009 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

Actually he does...

…by virtue of the fact that he did just that last season.

He’s a lot more qualified than Bergfors, as my understanding is that he’s only a winger.

Cool !
Let’s see what IIkka & Walter can bring to the Devils camp? I still think Lou has another player in mind. Lou is a deep thinker! lol

by ANDY IN VA on Jul 2, 2009 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

Chapell????

Why didn’t we just sign Chris Chapell??? Instead of this guy. Chapell is much better than IIkka. He played 68 games, had 38 goals and 38 assists, had 18 powerplay goals, for 76 points in 68 games. He is 6’4 bigger than IIkka, was in the OHL All Star Game. I just think Chapell would have been a better signing.

by LetsGoDevils on Jul 2, 2009 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

Chappell had more numbers in a more offensive league comprising of 16-20 year olds than Pikkarainen. And Chappell did it as an overaged player.

Pikkarainen played in an actual professional league with men of all ages and experience levels. I don’t think you can compare the OHL to the SM-Liiga.

didnt the devils used too really mix the lines up before sutter i hope they go back to that more anyways it would be kinnda funny to c him matched up against pronger cause of his size.he would have too be on a top line with parise when they play the flyers for that.
