Right Now, Who Do You Want as the New Jersey Devils 7th Defenseman?

With the end of prospect development camp, the next team event to focus on is training camp which is dreadfully so far away in September.  A benefit (or something to fill the time, as it were) for this long gap between actual action is that it allows us to speculate about what the 2009-10 roster will look like.  There's already a few FanPosts discussing just that right here and here and here, to start.   Feel free to contribute your own.

But today, I want to know who do you want as the 7th defenseman on the Devils.   Don't laugh, it's not a meaningless spot on the team.  In the past two seasons, the Devils utilized more than 6 defenseman on their active roster (infamously having 9 on the roster by the end of 2007-08).  While Brent Sutter is no longer the coach, a spare defender is useful should the Devils want to exploit a matchup, spell a player, or have someone ready to go should someone be injured.

According to Rich Chere today, Jay Leach - a spare defenseman last season with New Jersey - was told that there will be competition for that #7 spot on the defenseman depth chart.   Gulitti summed up the current situation with the Devils blueline in this post today after asking Lou about Cory Murphy.  So this question is quite appropriate.   A quick blurb about each of them:

Jay Leach - Served as an extra defenseman last season and did a decent job of it, so he has the benefit of experience. More of a defensive-defenseman than anything else.

Cory Murphy - His big asset is his offensive capabilities (a right-handed shot!), and he was featured on the power play in Tampa Bay.  Size and health are issues.  Also, he signed a two-way deal, so he could just go to Lowell if he's not playing?

Matthew Corrente - 2006 first round draft pick was in competition for a spot on the Devils with Anssi Salmela last season.  Could he break through now with another season of pro hockey under his belt?

Tyler Eckford - Two-way defenseman put up 27 points in 72 games in his first season of pro hockey. The 2004 7th round pick has developed well so far, could he make a leap in September?

Andy Greene - Serviceable #6 defenseman but he was scratched more than a few times last season.  He did sign a one-way contract per Gulitti, so he's not going to Lowell.  Still, his spot may not be cemented in the lineup, so picking him here would mean you want someone else that #6 spot (make your suggestions in the comments).

Other - Maybe someone I missed will end up in that spare defenseman role? Maybe someone like Mark Fraser will defy the odds, have an amazing training camp, and make it? Leave you suggestions on who that could be in the comments.

Depends on what the situation calls for

Jay Leach proved himself to be more than capable of filling in as a physical defenseman. Corrente is probably at the point where he is ready, so I expect him to fill the role. Greene is one of the top 6 defensemen. The seventh defenseman only plays when one of the top 6 does not, so do it this way: If White or Salvador doesn’t play, put in Leach since he plays a similar role. If Martin or Oduya is out, Corrente may be the way to go.

I am torn with this decision. Greene, in my opinion, should be the 6th d-man, but for strategy purposes or whatever, it might be worthwhile to scratch him a few times.

I really would like to see what Cory Murphy can offer. One of our primary needs going into the offseason was an offensive defenseman, and although he has struggled in his own zone, he might be useful in key situations to give the offense a boost.

Likewise, I love the fact that all indications are that there is a potential youth movement coming through the system now, on the cusp of being ready to make that leap. If he is ready, nothing would make me happier than to see Matthew Corrente take the 7th, or even the 6th, d spot. Our entire team was too old last year, but especially the defense. If I’m not mistaken, Andy Greene is currently our youngest defensemen at the tender age of 27. It would be great to see some more homegrown talent appear on the blueline next year.

That being said, I think it’s anybody’s game. As mentioned above, Leach already has a foothold as the incumbent, but he didn’t play well enough last year to settle that, so if anyone appears to be an upgrade, I’d say the job is theirs.
My hope: Matthew Corrente
My prediction: Jay Leach

If this Murphy guy truly is the offensive cats pajamas then Id like to see him spell one of our smallish guys when scoring gets tough, and its bound to do so at times during the long season. Who knows maybe hes good enough to supplant Greene whom i love and pray gets that 6th position.

Other then the occasional spell, I’d prefer someone more concrete and reliable for short term injuries and would prefer Leach.

Any long term injuries to our defense …. Corrente needs a long look with a large sample size. Lets see what he can do. Just playing him for a game and sending him back does nothing.

In other words i dont feel there should be a specific number 7 defenseman, Its just never that simple to me.

I hope that Murphy beats out Greene.

We could use the help on the PP. He is the real deal if he can just stay healthy.

I like Andy Greene but offense is needed and I want to see what Murphy can do.

Only top 4 Locked in.

First- Great site John, I enjoy finding all my Devils news in one place.

Specific to the defense, it is clear that we need some changes, We have lost the lockdown defense we had in the previous cup runs and we are one of the poorest scoring defenses in the league.

Lou does not make moves like Murphy unless he really thinks they can contribute, and I am positive he will be given not only a shot to be the 7th guy, but potentially a top 6 defensmen, and hears why:

Ekford and Corrente will be given every chance to make the top 6, but if they don’t they need to go to Lowell and play every day. I would love to see one or both make team, and if that happens Mottau or Greene will be seven. ( remember Mottau came to camp as a depth guy and made the team)

Lets assume Corrente and Ekford go down to Lowell. The best of the rest will make up spots 5 thru 7, and that would probably be some combination of Mottau,Greene, and Murphy. Mottau has been solid for us, but being a small defensman he needs to score more to maximize his value. Greene has shown flashes, but also has had some bad injury luck and if he stays healthy I expect great things from him.Murphy’s scoring cant be ignored, and if he does it in the preseason he will be on this team. We will be playing 8 or 9 D men this year due to injuries, so Leach will get some games.

So where do Corrente and Ekford get thier shot? One will surely take Colin White’s spot when his contract is up. I know thats tough to hear, but he has never been the same since his eye injury and if we have learned nothing else from this off season Lou has no issues cutting the cord. This one is even tougher, but if you take emotion out of it I think for the right top 3 D player he would pakage Paul Martin and one of these Depth players with a prospect and bring in a big shot from the point. Who? I’d love to see Sheldon Souray back, and don’t forget he is best buddies with Marty.

We have drafted alot of D over the last few years and in 2 or 3 years there will be alot of new names here.

Thanks. I’m responding to this specifically because you raise a very interesting point: contracts. In 2010, Paul Martin, Jay Leach, and Mike Mottau will all be UFAs. This will create space on the team for certain (space for Corrente and Eckford?), but perhaps this leads us to a follow-up question: Should the Devils trade Martin now? With a potentially falling cap and the desire to get younger, could the Devils simply go without Paul Martin? I personally don’t think so; but perhaps the Devils could move Martin to get a true #1 and avoid a potential signing headache for 2010-11?

By the way, White’s contract ends 2013 – along with Salvador and Oduya. And White’s got a NTC, so he’s not going anywhere.

I’m very glad at the comments about this – this is a harder decision than one may think!

I’m feeling kind of bad for Greene here, Murphy can definitely battle for that spot as-is because he brings something to the table and then there’s 3 guys who could take that #7 spot as only a stepping stone. I almost want to say – based on the last two seasons – it’s a safe bet he’ll be scratched more than a few times for tactical reasons and in that time, Greene has to be hoping it won’t be a long wait until the next game!

Whites Contract

I looked up Whites contract also, and I like locking up Oduya and Salvador that long, But I just don’t think Colin White is a 3 million a year player any longer. The CBA expires in 2011, and there may be some issue with contract terms then as teams are looking to walk away from contracts.

Martin was supposed to be the next coming of a previous player who wore #27 who’s name I have purposely blanked permenantly from my brain , and he just has not taken that step. As a UFA next year he’s going to want alot of money, and I just dont see doing it with Corrente and Eckford waiting in the wings.

Martin was supposed to be the next coming of…Randy Velischek?

I don’t think anyone honestly expected Martin to be the next Neidermayer. Or even the next Rafalski.

Martin

Rafalski was a nobody when he came here. Lou found him and gave him the chance to prove himself and thank god he did, but he wasnt developed from within our system like Nieds or Martin. When Niedermayer bailed Martin was the best young guy in our system, and although there are very few in Niedermayers category, Martin was supposed to be our next stud defenseman. I just don’t think he is a guy you build your defense around.

And I’m not taking anything away from Rafalski. He was a great player for us and I don’t believe Lou offered near the same money as Detroit, so I can’t blame him for leaving. Neidermayer on the other hand turned down more money from us to go to Anahiem, but you did make me use his name so i guess time heals old wounds.

trade

with all that young talent in lowell i say trade martin and get a young defenseman here or how about this scenario sign marc andre bergeron trade martin for a young center or even some draft picks? what does the devil nation think?

by devilfan on Jul 25, 2009 8:57 AM EDT reply actions

martin

I disagree. I think while Martin isn’t a true #1, he is a great #2. We need to build a defense around him and someone, perhaps Oduya or someone more solid. Devils always seem to come out on the bad end of a trade, even if that trade help us to win a cup, we usually end up losing the people we trade for, for little or nothing.
