NJ Devils: What To Do Next
To this point in the summer, the New Jersey Devils have laid out their plans and executed. The gameplan this summer is youth movement, and save for the Cory Murphy signing, that is exactly what's happened. The signing of Murphy gives the Devils 8 defensemen who could potentially play with the big club this season, and that's ignoring the fact that a strong training camp from Matt Corrente and/or Tyler Eckford can only increase that number. So working with the exact lineup of the Devils right now, here is what I would do in the GM's chair.
1. Re-Sign Brendan Shanahan to a 1-year contract.
I know there is a lot of interest in Shanahan, but as long as the price is not outrageous, the Devils need to do everything they can to bring Shanny back for one more season. He has been a solid addition to our group of forwards, provides solid veteran leadership, and would make a terrific role model for the young players who make the roster...he's also at the point in his career where all this will come at a reasonable price. I would set my limit at about $1.2 million, so if we can bring him back for one year at or below that price, I call this a no-brainer.
2. Can Rolston play center? If not, get one.
It was a short-lived experiment, but Rolston centering Elias and Gionta was a great line idea that was never given the proper time to pan out. Gionta is gone, but Nicklas Bergfors can slide into that right wing spot. Rolston has played center before, and has publicly called Jacques Lemaire the best coach he's ever had. The two have a great working relationship, and if the coaching staff can help Rolston take on a center role, we find ourselves with two quality scoring lines without having to spend any more money. Of course, Rolston has to be willing to take on this role...if he's not, the hole must be filled some other way. Nevertheless, the biggest hole on the Devils is at the center position right now. Which is semi-related to the next point...
3. Unload a defenseman or two...
I know that nobody is going to want Mike Mottau or Jay Leach, but they are clearly the weakest links on defense right now. Perhaps instead of praying to get someone of value in return, the Devils can further the draft movement by turning these spare parts into later round draft picks. I know many people don't see Mike Mottau as a spare part, but I do. He was reliable, but way too indicative of what the Devils defense has too much of: good enough, but not great defensemen. Maybe he can fetch a depth forward in return, but if not, I would trade both for draft picks. We're going to need those roster spots on defense to make room for the two or three defensive prospects that may be ready for primetime.
4. Let Jeff Frazee continue to develop.
The mere thought that Jeff Frazee could be backing up Martin Brodeur this season is ridiculous to me. He's had one good season, and will need at least one more before he should be considered for such a thing. With Yann Danis now in the fold, the Devils can and should give Frazee all the playing time he can handle in Lowell. Calling him up once in a while for a little trial-by-fire certainly won't hurt, but Frazee should spend most of the year gaining actual playing experience.
5. Ignore everyone around you.
I just don't get people. For the past two years, hoardes of Devils fans have been calling for a youth movement. "The Devils are too old, they're too slow, it's time for change." Well change is now here, and yet all I see around blogs are an endless barrage of comments berating Lou for "not doing anything," "running the team into the ground," etc. Am I the only one who has put two and two together here? This IS the youth movement you've all been calling for, get over yourselves and stop whining! We're better for playing it safe with our finances anyway; worst-case scenario, the cap doesn't go down like we thought it would, we spend the money on talent; best-case scenario, the cap does go down like we thought it would, we're sitting pretty while teams like Philadelphia desperately try to get under the cap...we pick up a quality player or two.
Thoughts? Agree or disagree? I'd love to hear it.

Love it...
Don’t make the mistake I made when saying Rolston could be a center. Look at his career faceoff stats. Not very good.
Shanny…I don’t know. If we want youth, I think we should try and bring someone up. (Leblond?)
Cannot agree more with 3-5.

Good fanpost
I have no issue with re-signing Shanahan on it’s own. Yet, with the signings of Leblond and Pikkarainen as well as other prospects competing for a roster spot, that fourth line wing spot is pretty crowded as is. Again, I wouldn’t mind Shanahan for another season.
With respect to #2, well, I compared Zubrus, Rolston, and Elias as centers earlier this month and, well, Zubrus is actually the better center. Now, the Devils may not be able to sign a good second line center, but they can sign a third/fourth line center and just rough it with Zajac, Zubrus, signing, Pelley.
I do agree with your last 3 points. Mottau and Leach could be assets to move as they are UFAs after this season, there will be more pressure for them to be moved if a defenseman prospect really makes his case this September. Frazee just needs time
Lastly, the last point won’t be a concern for Lou. Lou has always done it his way and, well, look at results. ILWT. All day. Every day.

1. I can take or leave Shanny. If we don’t then someone else gets to prove what their worth. If he does then we can kind of expect what we have seen in the past.
2. Rolston could play center but I think it is WAYY to late to go after a center. Saku was the perfect man but no one is around in the market worth the money.
3. With the style that Lemaire is bring, a defensive oriented team, they need to improve the defense because even with Sutter’s style of play the defense was getting burned and burned badly. The defense is the biggest issue with me right now. That is why I’m afraid because I dont think the defense can with stand the style of play. Its not like how it was in ’95.
4. Frazee needs to play more. Marty should not be playing more than 65 games this year. With his age its not a good thing for Marty to play more than 65. Dare I say, I have always been afraid to say this but, Marty is not the same Marty we have known and love. Yes we see him at times with a great save or two but then we see the Marty that makes me scared to see a shot on goal because you never know when Marty will let in a soft goal. See 2009 Playoff 1st round against Carolina.
5. As long as the Devils can continue to make the Playoffs, I dont care who is on the team. Now lets just get passed the first round this year!

Devils Defense,
Mike Mottau and Andy Green both should be shown the door. In the span of three years we loose Stevens, Dano, Rafalski, and Neider., and we replaced them with who ? It’s time to replace the defense with credible, top shelf blue liners, not run of the mill nobody’s. Scott Gomez goes, we get Zubrus, Stop being so damm cheap, Other teams go after top line players, but for some reason, Uncle Lou never seems to be able to come to terms with any of these guys. Why ?. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know Patrick Elias would be a much happier, more productive player if you went out and got as yet UNSIGNED ! Peter Sykora, how much could he possibly cost ? Dennis Seidenberg is also available. It’s nice that you have a shinny new arena, but if you don’t start putting a team that can get past the first round on the ice, Disney on Ice might be available.

There. Is. A. Salary. Cap.
And why would you have top shelf blue liners playing in the #4/#5/#6 spots?

The defense does need to have some credible names. The offense is just fine other than a second line center but I really dont see a hue problem with that. Yes a decent second line center will really help Parise-Zajac-Langs. The defense is what really really needs to be fixed. I dont think there is anyone out there in the market that is worth signing.(same could be said about centers.) To fix the defense it will require a few trades. They dont have to be blockbuster deals either. They need to be role players that will avoid injury and that can maybe gel with White or Oduya. I think 2 defensemen would be good. Mottau and Greene can play together on the 3rd line. But the Devils need to make moves but what the Devils will have to give up who knows.

I have looked through the free agent defensemen. I see two that could work with the Devils defense. Marc-Andre Bergeron and Ossi Vaananen. Bergeron could play with Oduya and Vaananen with White. Both were cheap last year. Bergeron was 1.116 and Vaananen was 1.000. Both reasonably priced for what they bring. I have also looked at centers. Dominic Moore could be ok but a bit of a stretch for a 2nd line center. I have heard that the Rangers do plan on letting Brandon Dubinsky go so maybe he would work considering he is young and could have great chemistry with veteran players.

Nothing to worry about
My thought it is right time to give more credit to young players.
Who was #28 or #14 or #23 some 10 years ago? For sure on the back of Nieds, Scott and Keno they were discussed as same as now all of you tattle on Greeny, Mottau, Leblond and others, especially drafted 1-2 years ago. Under NJ system those # became who they are now – sound names in NHL.
Now all are system and coach-dependable things.
Hope Lemaire will support offensive initiatives born in 2008-2009 as well as will bring necessary strenth and confidence in defensive zone.

The only regret – we lost Salmela, it was really short-sighted move.

Salmela
It was a pretty dumb trade looking back, but luckily we still have some quality defensive prospects. Lou isn’t immune from making mistakes, look how much Zubrus continues to make and how long we’re stuck with him. Also, Mogilny and Malakhov take 2…they never seem like mistakes at the time and that’s why they were done in the first place.
I do agree with your points though, especially since it agrees with mine…if Lemaire just works with the team he has, and keeps the offense ticking while stabilizing the back end, we’ll be just fine. And in a few years, who is to say the name Bergfors will not be regarded the way Parise’s is now?
by thejerseydevil on Jul 30, 2009 1:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If Salmela wasn’t traded, there would be even less of a chance for Corrente or Eckford breaking through. Truth be told, I don’t think the Devils will miss Salmela because they have prospects in the system starting to develop into potential NHL players.
I don’t think Bergfors will be THAT good, but I would like to think that Lemaire will coach the team based on what the players can do rather than enforce a system regardless. Again, we shall see with that, though.

Trading Salmela was stupid
Looking on the bright side, we still have some solid prospects on the blue-line, with guys like Corrente, Eckford, and Fraser coming to mind. I thought I would see that youth movement last year, but that was never to be. This year, I’m hoping that’s the case.
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!

Let them develop.
Corrente needs another year in lowel (at least) and the rest more.
We shouldn’t rush these guys if we want them to be all that they can be.

i feel good about this season
i like that fith point.if other devil fans arent negative enough for u check out what the other teams in the division fans are saying.i honestly think there are fans of other teams that would rather see the devils fail then have there own teams do well.i really think the devils will be one of the better teams this year.if they can get some talent (D-man in my opinion)around the trade deadline i think they could be real contenders.

I'm sure
For some reason we’re right up there with the Leafs as one of the teams that most other NHL fans hate the most. I don’t get it, but okay I guess they’re just jealous of our track record. I see where you’re coming from on getting another defenseman, but if we had to only address one need right now I’m sticking with a center. I just don’t feel that Zajac, Zubrus and Pelley are going to cut it. If nothing else, we have a lot of defensemen, but at this point we have three centers. I agree that a top d-man would help a LOT, but I’d still place that #2 after a center on the to-do list.
by thejerseydevil on Aug 1, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
At this point, I’m not so much concerned about the Devils getting a #2 center; just that they get a center. I can live with Zubrus as a #2 center to start the season, and there’s likely more #3/#4 centers available to get without being too cost-prohibitive right now anyway.
