I'm not sure I've ever seen Canadian teams in the NHL ever go so hog wild during free agency as they have this year. Just today, the Senators signed Alexei Kovalev and the Leafs signed Francois Beauchemin.
This follows the Montreal Canadiens ridiculous, and not necessarily intelligent, spending spree on Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Jaroslav Spacek and Hal Gill. The Leafs have also gone a bit nuts while Calgary spent a lot of dollars to lock up Jay Bouwmeester and Edmonton was trying to bring Dany Heatley in and signed Nickolai Khabibulin. None of the Canadian teams have really sat out the free agent frenzy and I'm just wondering, is Canada not going to feel the effect of the upcoming drop in the salary cap? Is the economy so much better up there right now? What's the deal, Canadians?
