What Should Devils Fans Expect: Dainius Zubrus
Today will be a relatively quick one as I've given my thoughts on Dainius Zubrus before. Back in May, I wrote about the conundrum that the Lithuanian Freight Train provides to the Devils. In summary, it's that he provides value by winning faceoffs (51.2% won out of 923) and performing very well under Brent Sutter's offense, where puck possession was emphasized. Zubrus won a ton of battles for the puck and his size alone commanded attention from the defense, especially down low. Yet, his offensive production isn't enough to justify his salary ($3.4 million/year through 2012-13) and it was disappointing that in a consistent spot on an offensive line between Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta, he scored a whopping 2 more points than he did in his first season as a Devil. As a result, many fans felt the Devils needed an upgrade at center for the second line - something I can definitely sympathize with.
However, after the initial free agent frenzy in a summer, the Devils did not make any moves for one reason or another. And so we stand here with the Devils having three natural centers on the New Jersey roster: Travis Zajac, who will certainly center the first line; Zubrus, and Rod Pelley, who is a defensive-minded center with 67 games of NHL experience. Back in July, I argued that among the three Devils penciled in on the second line, Zubrus would be the best choice for center over Brian Rolston and Elias. As fortune would have it, Lou said the following to Tom Gulitti with respect to Rolston's role in 2009-10 last Friday:
The final answer to the Brian Rolston question won't be known until after training camp, but right now the Devils' plans are for Rolston to play wing in 2009-10 and not center, which he played for most of last season. Rolston flourished as a left wing in his three seasons with head coach Jacques Lemaire in Minnesota and he admits that is the position in which he is most comfortable.
"We'll see how training camp goes, but most probably he'll be at wing," Lamoriello admitted.
Since moving Elias to center would make no sense, by default, Zubrus' spot on the team as of right now is easy to figure out: second line center. You may not like it, you don't have to like it, and the Devils could change it with a signing or a trade. But there are no real alternatives within the current roster and system right now. Zubrus is a center who has played on the second line, played with Elias for most of last season, and has done a good job at everything but scoring while in that role. No one else on the roster is more qualified as far as I know.
That said, figuring out what to expect from Zubrus is quite difficult.
For starters, his best offensive seasons did come fairly recently in 2005-06 and 2006-07, topping 20 goals and 55 points in each. However, it's worth noting he was playing right next to Alexander Ovechkin on the Capitals in those two seasons. Not that Elias is chopped liver, but let's be honest with ourselves. He was playing with Alexander Ovechkin. He may not hit these numbers again. And that's sad since they aren't bad numbers at all.
In my mind, knowing this tells me that we shouldn't expect Zubrus to breakout for 60-65 points. It would be wonderful, but not sensible to expect. Yet, I don't think that alone is what makes coming up with a fair expectation of the player difficult. The big wild card will be new head coach Jacques Lemaire.
In my post in May, I stated that I wanted to see Zubrus shoot more. Yes, he was with Ovechkin in Washington in those two seasons; those were the two seasons where he shot the most. He hasn't touched 150 shots on goal since 2006-07, and I think his production can only really improve if he just takes more shots. I still do. Yet, Zubrus will be on a line with Elias, a featured winger on the team, and Rolston, who has a massive shot. It's plausible that Lemaire could instruct that those two should be given every chance to shoot. Which is fair, it could very well be the smart decision. But that would hurt Zubrus from taking shots on his own - unless he's set up real well for rebounds and loose pucks.
More importantly, we don't even know how Lemaire will use Zubrus at all. Remember that Zubrus' biggest contribution to the team last season was in winning battles for the puck and drawing defenders with his size. Should Lemaire put in a completely different offensive system, one that doesn't play to his strengths, Zubrus' could suffer big time. Likewise, Lemaire has seen tapes of how the Devils operated last season and it's possible that he'll retain Sutter's system, which I think would be to Zubrus' benefit. It's not just that Zubrus has to work on his own game to contribute more to the team, how he will be used will be just as a significant factor.
So what to expect? If Zubrus does stay on at center on the second line, then I would like to see him win at least 51% of his faceoffs to start. In terms of points, this is tricky as those two seasons right after the lockout are the only times Zubrus has had more than 20 goals and 55 points in a season. All the same, I would like to see him improve over his production from last season. So I'm expecting about 17 goals and about 30 assists. Truth be told, I'd want him to break 50 points, I want him to score 20 goals, but I'm not really seeing any reason to believe that he will next season. I will add this positive caveat; I won't mind him not getting 50 points if he makes sure Elias and Rolston are free enough to put up significant numbers. He may look real good between Elias and Rolston in 2010; but don't expect that contract to look like a bargain anytime soon!
Now it's time to have your say. Perhaps you have reason to believe Zubrus can come closer to his career highs next season. Perhaps that reason is his contract. Perhaps your expectations are lower, thinking that he'll be shifted around. Perhaps we can't say for sure because we don't know how he'll be used. Either way, tell me what you think. Please leave your comments below about what you expect from Zubrus in 2009-10. (And please don't shift the comments to who should be signed/traded for that spot. For all intents and purposes, he's a Devil next season. Let's focus on Zubrus first.)

Zubrus
I agree that Zubrus is probably the best option we have at the moment and I did notice that Zubrus HAD to play with Ovechkin in Washington with that 19. I’d rather have Zubrus have a repeat of last year than to see him hit that hole as far as +/
Bottom line for us Devils fans is that we’re getting younger and will have just as many question marks with our roster as we’ve ever had. Whether or not our “youth movement” pans out will take the “wait and see” approach. I’m fairly confident with Lemaire back and our building blocks in place, we’ll still be a very competitive team.
The big benefit that the Devils have is that their question marks aren’t in crucial areas. The defense is all back, Brodeur is the starter, and the top two lines are stable assuming A) Zubrus is the center as I think he has to be at this point and B) Rolston is the man to take over Gionta’s spot. The question marks are more for the bottom two lines, the most pressing one being the lack of a fourth center (regardless of line) on the roster.

I couldn't type this without laughing histerically.
During Zubrus’ hot streak/start, you compared him to what Viktor Kozlov should have been. Well, Kozlov’s still a free agent. Maybe it woudn’t be that bad on the fourth line. He’s still big and can hit.
HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA.
No. I’d rather see brookebank take over for center.
Viktor Kozlov is never the answer.
Neither is Chris Gratton for that matter.

Good assesment on Zubrus. I’m just confused with him. I was very excited when we signed him, and have been disappointed since. Maybe it is that Ovechkin was such a threat that Zubrus had more room.
Some interesting points with Zubrus is that he did play 82 games the last two years which he hasnt done before. He was also on the plus side the last two years, not by a great margin, but he has been a bit rollercoaster in that regard in his career.
I have to admit that he is our best option at the moment, so he has to win faceoffs and play big down the middle. He has to take the body when the opportunity presents and dig in the corners and use his size. As I previously said he also has to cause havoc in front and be in the opposing D’s face. If he can do this he will give Rolston and Elias room to play and still chip in 20 goals.
A great year? 25 and 35, but I won’t mind his numbers as much as long as Rolston and Elias get there chances and bury them. Average year? 18g 25a.
I admit I have been tough on Zubrus, even comparing his invisibility at times to Stephane Richer, so i have decided to give him a break and wait and see what he brings this year.
We are heavy on Wings and D in our system and a little thin on natural pivots. Josefson is probably the best C in the system, but is a couple years out. Cormier is the closest , but he may not project to a top 2 center.
With respect to the Devils’ system, the issue is that all of the centers need time. David Wohlberg is in college. Adam Henrique may go back to junior. Josefson has another year with Djurgardens. Cormier is expected to go back to junior, so said Lou according to Gulitti. Kory Nagy, I think, will need time in Lowell.
As I said earlier, Vrana was really unfortunate to pick this summer to sign with a Czech Republic team.
Back to Zubrus, you’re probably on the money with respect to an “average” year with him. Though if Elias and Rolston are making the most of their ice time, I would like to think that Zubrus will pick up some more assists on that alone.

roster
Interesting that we only list 9 fowards on the official roster. No Pikkarainen, No Ben Walter who Lou must like if he gave up a pretty decent prospect in Romano. But they list Murphy and Davison. Must have something to do with their contract types?
Penciling Pelley between Clarkson and Pando still leaves us short a center, and concensus seems to be that Rolston should not be it.
Shanahan will sign with us soon, and Bergfors is making this team, and maybe Halisuk also, so this may be a very interesting camp.
My gripe with Zubrus...
Is really not as much the scoring and shooting. Certainly would like to get much more consistency. Weren’t like 5 or 6 of his goals in 2 Sunday games, meaning he got all of 10 goals in the remaining 80 games? Regardless I don’t think it is critical that he be in our top couple scorers.
My bigger gripe is that despite his size, Zubrus to me is not physical enough. John, you have the data and are saying he won alot of puck possession battles. But from my view as a newer hockey fan (could not have told you what a power play was before about 1993) I just feel that he does not use that big frame of his enough. I would like to see him hit a bit more.
Zubrus is probably taking more heat than he deserves, but on the other hand he simply is not earning a $3+ million comp package – so far.

Well, as I said in this post, such battles aren’t recorded on the scoresheet. So that’s an observation from seeing him play a full season than anything else.
I can say that he had the most hits out of anybody on the top 2 lines with 98, 6th on the team (behind Rupp, Holik, Clarkson, Salvador, and White). So it’s arguable as to whether he’s using his body or not. I think he is and given his spot on the team, he really shouldn’t be shooting for 125+ hits or something like that.

With Rupp and Holik gone among the forwards, who is going to step up? Wouldn’t Zubrus have to play part of that role?

Not if he’s on the top two lines. With respect to guys out there to “bring the pain,” Leblond and Pikkarainen can do that.

Zubrus
did okay as the center between Elias and Gionta. He was never great – he doesn’t have the playmaking ability to really set up Elias consistently – but he did perform better in the position than Rolston did under Sutter’s system. I would argue that the line’s offensive production was mostly due to contributions from Elias, meaning that Zubrus should have similar offensive numbers this year as well, within 10 points of last year. As the last poster stated, Zubrus had a few games where he just dominated and remained rather silent for the rest of the season. If he has one or two more games like that this year we can expect over 50 points. However, keep in mind that he also played all 82 games last season, and a minor injury could limit his production just as easily.
Personally, I don’t think that Zubrus allows Elias to reach his potential. It is quite possible that replacing Gionta with a better playmaker might solve this issue, but considering that Gionta had 31 even-strength assists last year, that is easier said than done. As a result, the issue becomes trying to figure out who can better serve Elias in the 2nd-line center role. I think the Devils are better off trying to insert a prospect, such as Halischuk on the line than going with Zubrus.
my take on Dainius
I was never against Zubrus. In fact, I was very excited when I heard he signed here. I think people just expected way too much from him. Not to mention his, as some of you refer his contract to being, “overpaid,” I believe he provides good all around value to the team. It’s just that people expected him to replace Gomez right away. His second year with the Devils was without a doubt, a lot better. Except we watched his hot streak turn into cold vapor trail. Overall, I can understand everyone disapointment with him. Some games the dude just…isn’t there. And some other games he shows up noticed by everyone.
I expect better numbers from him this upcoming season as I believe he is getting more comfortable with the team. I’m predicting 17 goals and somewhere along 30 assists. And without a doubt he will remain second line center. Come on people, he’s not the worst player they have
