NJ Devils & Atlantic Division Weekly Snapshot: 1/3 - 1/9
It's a brand new year and the New Jersey Devils have kicked it off with something new: a gap over all four Atlantic Division teams while sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference. The Devils had a successful last week of 2009, a successful first game of 2009, and were helped out massively by an absolutely terrible week by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins lost all four of their games last week. Since they have done so well up until last week, they got a commanding 10 point lead over the third-place New York Rangers. Yet, the Devils have a 6 point gap over the Penguins to kick off the new year.
Take a close look at these standings now, as the Flyers play the Ottawa Senators at 1 PM today. They could easily hop up to third place by the end of today. Let's get back to raving about the Devils' great position. Not only do they have opened up a lead over the Penguins; but they still have two games in hand on them. Essentially, this is a 10 point bubble so if the Devils do have a short slump, it's not the end of the world. I'm sure Jacques Lemaire won't have the team get complacent over it, but the fans should realize this and understand that a loss here and there isn't too damaging with respect to the team's standing.
| Potential Points | Last Week | Conf. Position | |
| NJD | 6 | 3-1-0 | 1st |
| PIT | 8 | 0-4-0 | 4th |
| NYR | 8 | 1-1-1 | 8th |
| NYI | 6 | 2-1-1 | 11th |
| PHI | 8 | 2-0-1 | 12th |
What's more is that the Devils will end this week with a third game in hand over the Penguins. Mathematically, the only way the Penguins can top the Devils by next week is if the Devils lose all their games and the Penguins win all of their games this week. A tie in points would still keep the Devils on top due to the number of games played. Therefore, the Devils are likely to end the week at the top of the Atlantic Division. Here's how the next week breaks down for the division.
| 1/3 | 1/4 | 1/5 | 1/6 | 1/7 | 1/8 | 1/9 | |
| NJD | vs. DAL | vs. TB | @ MTL | ||||
| PIT | @ FLA | vs. ATL | vs. PHI | @ TOR | |||
| NYR | vs. BOS | vs. DAL | @ ATL | @ BOS | |||
| NYI | @ COL | @ DAL | @ PHX | ||||
| PHI | @ OTT | vs. TOR | @ PIT | vs. TB |
There's only inter-division matchup this week, the Pennsylvania Rivalry continues between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on Thursday. Both teams would love to win, not just because of the hatred both teams have for each other, but also for the standings. The Penguins want to start making up ground on New Jersey, whereas the Flyers want to make a run up the Eastern Conference. With the Islanders playing one fewer game than both the Rangers, this week is an opportunity for the Rangers to cement their eighth place position and for the Flyers to overtake both teams. The Islanders could easily end up in last place even if all three teams win out this week. So Islanders fans will be cheering for the Rangers and Flyers to drop points so their favorite team can keep pace within the division and the conference. Something I think they may do anyway.
Either way, in addition to the Atlantic Division, expect the Devils to stay at the top of the Eastern Conference by the end of this week. Yeah, I said Eastern Conference. The Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals each have 54 points. The Sabres have the best chance to move up to first. They do have an extra game this week, like the Penguins, but they need New Jersey to two of their games this week while winning their games. I don't think it's likely. The Caps only have three games this week and need New Jersey to lose out while sweeping this week - which is also unlikely.
I hope these weekly snapshots are proof that doing well in October, November, and December makes it easier in January, February, and March. So far, I don't think the Devils could be in a more advantageous spot where they are now.

I love this
two less games than everyone else, yet still looking down at everyone else.
Let’s keep it up. I’ve got a good feeling about this year
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
The last time I felt like this about the devils I think it was 2000 or so. Just excited during the year for what might be.

Let's not get too excited yet
It would be great to have a great seating but in Hockey the 8 seed can beat the 1 seed more often the other sports. Washington doesn’t play enough team defense to ever be in the President’s cup running. Pittsburgh simply is not the same without Gonchar 100% in their line up.
I love the Devils chances this year. They seem to have chemistry and grit but these guys got to keep doing what they’ve been doing and play hard every night. I’ve been a devils fan since 92 and as sacrilegious as it is this is my favorite Devils team. I never had an offensive player to as exciting to see in person for the devils then Parise. I adore the Veteran leadership in Langenbrunner and Elias. Lemaire’s got the kid’s playing hard and of course Broduer is the greatest devil of them all but we shouldn’t look ahead. This season is special no matter what and I will enjoy it.
PS Rangers suck.
Only one thing has bothered me about this team this year, and that’s the pairing of White and Mottau. Truth is, these two are flat out awful when they are paired together, and it seems as if every time they are we either give up a goal or a scoring chance that could have been a goal. They are always poorly positioned and lazy when together. Strange thing is, this doesn’t seem to happen when they are paired with other defensemen. I’m glad Jacques saw this and split them up for a while, but they’re back together now and it’s really troubling.
I guess things are going pretty well when that’s the only blemish on an otherwise outstanding season so far.
Players Currently in My Doghouse: Brian Rolston, Mike Mottau, and now proud to welcome Andrew Peters
i severly agree bout mottau and white pair
each one should be paired with a smaller,more attack oreinted d man like oduya or greene

im sure
the devils will have some streaks of losing but im not worried because teams that win the president trophy seem to be vunerable in the playoffs for some reason.the hawks will probably get it like the blues did when quinville(spelling)was there coach.does anybody rember how that turned out..
to me i think its nice to do great in the regular season but the devils need to show themselves to the league in the playoffs.there are many many stars on the devils i hope the rest of the nhl gets to see how great they are cause all icehockey fans watch the last couple of rounds,im tired of hearing that the devils lack talent or are “no names”.

Devils against western opponents.
Does anyone know what the devils record is so far this year against the western division??? They are saying the western division is stronger than the East this year.
Donald Vasquez
They are 3-3-1
They say that every year, and every year it’s shown that the best teams win regardless. The West has a better record in E v W head-to-head, but it means little. Each conference has a few powerhouses, a few basement dwellers and a bunch of mediocre teams. This argument is brought up annually by fans of Western division teams that are upset that the Eastern conference gets more press.
There are 4-7 games at the end of the year that settle the matter.
Nhl network.
The Nhl network was the ones who commented on it. I found it quite unbelievable myself.
