New Jersey Devils Blow Lead in Heartbreaking Loss to the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2
The New Jersey Devils had a one goal lead going into the second period, thanks to an impressive shot by Johnny Oduya from the point. The New Jersey Devils made it 2-0 thanks to Travis Zajac finding Jonathan Quick's five-hole to be just too big. But the Devils went on to concede a late goal in the second period to Michael Handzus; a late equalizer in the third period to Wayne Simmonds' backhand beating Martin Brodeur on a screen; and ultimately lost the game on a Drew Doughty slapshot (he is a beast on defense) that was either tipped in by Ryan Smyth on his screen or went past the Smyth-screened Brodeur.
Those are the facts. This is not some kind of a sick joke. The Devils blew their lead and the game late, turning what could have - what should have - been a win over LA, into an extension of the Kings' winning streak (now at 6). This actually happened in front of a nearly full crowd (all the tickets sold, though) and from my view in Section 1, Row 16, Seat 5, I was shocked, stunned, and frozen in silence.
Here is the recap from NHL.com, complete with all the stats from the game. Go to Jewels From the Crown later for a recap. Read on my further anger about the game. No, that's not a typo. I'm quite angry about this game.
I'm angry that the Devils built up a 2 goal lead largely from the strength of the ZZZ unit (in total - Parise with 5 shots and 2 assists; Zubrus with 4 shots and an assist; and Zajac with 3 shots and a goal and an assist) and lost it.
I'm angry that the Devils lost this lead due to miscues in their own zone. The one complaint I had all throughout the game was how the Devils struggled to clear the puck or made a poor pass in their own zone. Often this lead to LA getting the puck and the defense needing to react to make sure it doesn't lead to a shot. And for the ones that did, the shots were stopped in short order by Martin Brodeur. But all it did was help keep the Kings in this game.
I'm angry at all of the giveaways that the Devils had tonight. Not that any necessarily led to the Kings' goals and the "official" counting of giveaways can be sketchy at best, but the Devils coughed up 17 to the Kings' 7. Ugh.
I'm angry that Rob Niedermayer misplayed the initial feed by Scott Parse, knocking it forward instead of to the side. I'm angry he was frozen on the second attempt, leaving two Kings to crash the net and get lucky on the loose puck. I'm angry that Handzus beat Bryce Salvador, who had to worry about two Kings upon replay, to the space in front of the net. I'm angry that some are choosing to blame Mike Mottau when Niedermayer botched it up next to the net.
I'm angry that the power play was actually threatening - yes actually threatening - to LA this evening and only some big stops by Quick prevented the game from becoming 3-1. The most notable of these came off a rebound, where Dainius Zubrus chose correctly to try and lift it just over Quick, only to be denied by his glove.
I'm angry that the Devils got so many good shots on Quick and could not get that important third goal. The Devils didn't sit on this lead in the third period. They went forward, they made Quick and the Kings fans sweat with their 14 shots on net. Many were strong shots, good chances to score, only it wasn't to be tonight for whatever reason (Quick being great, finishing not being great, whatever else). There was no trap, there was no passive play, the Devils choked it all in a flash; which was why this was so shocking to the fans.
I'm angry that guys like Brian Rolston, Dean McAmmond, Jamie Langenbrunner, and Nicklas Bergfors put in good, hard working efforts and forechecked well enough and their efforts were for naught.
I'm angry that Martin Brodeur made so many big saves, but idiots, morons, and haters will use this game as an example that he lost his edge or he needs to rest or anything of the sort. As if Brodeur, rested or otherwise, had the magical ability to see through people standing in front of him on shots! If you feel he should have had either of the last two goals, with all due respect, please remove your head from your alimentary canal and consider actually watching the game instead of being box-score pundits who don't know what they're talking about.
I'm angry that this will be compared to Game 7 against Carolina last season except this game wasn't nearly as important, Brodeur was screened on both the game tying and game winning goal, and the Devils actually played better than the Kings for most of the game.
I'm angry that Ryan Smyth screened Brodeur for both Simmonds' and Doughty's goals. Seriously! The same player!
I'm angry that the Devils have developed an inability to defend against screens; but also at the fact that I have no real idea on how to do that. Leaving them alone doesn't work, as Devils fans saw tonight. Trying to muscle the screen away could lead to a penalty if it isn't subtle; but even if there's no call on it, the screen becomes larger with a defender trying to move the screen.
I'm angry that Andy Greene tripped that King, though it wouldn't at all surprise me if the King, shall I say, drew the penalty.
I'm angry that the Devils who have been so excellent when they go into periods with leads finally lose one and in this fashion. I'm angry at being reminded by Tom Gulitti that the Devils have only allowed one game tying goal prior to Friday's OT win over the Maple Leafs, another game that should have ended with a win in regulation for New Jersey. Now they have allowed two in their last two games and one leading to a loss, going into Toronto who has nothing to lose and two new players (Dion Phaneuf, J-S Giguere) who have everything to gain from playing well on Tuesday.
I'm angry from Gulitti's post-game post on the matter that the players recognize the problem. So fix it! Stop it from happening! It's in your hands, guys! You can do something about it!
I'm angry that Jacques Lemaire is actually right when he says this about tonight's game, as reported by Gulitti. The Devils did indeed play a good overall game, but they lost due to one botched defensive play and two screens. I can't say the Devils sucked, they just choked.
"We didn’t give them a lot in the third," Devils coach Jacques Lemaire said. "Take the power play out, which is one scoring chance on the goal they had, and they had two scoring chances in the rest of the period, which is not a lot. It’s not that we played really bad. We figured they had maybe six, seven chances the whole game. I thought we played decent defensively."
I'm angry that there is no easy solution for this problem. As much as you'd like to see (INSERT DEVIL YOU'RE NOT HAPPY WITH HERE) traded, that's not going to fix this problem. Making trades just after some tough losses is generally ill-advised, especially since there isn't one player that is mainly at fault for what transpired tonight. You want to have a scapegoat, fine, but I see this as a team problem and one that can only be solved by the team.
I'm angry that I, someone who follows the team regularly, can't even figure this team out. It's the end of January and I have no idea whether this is just a slump, whether this is a problem with the system, whether this is a coaching issue, whether this is just bad luck, or (most important) what can be done to prevent this from happening in the future. Are these the real Devils? And if not, how can they come back?
I'm thankful for your comments in the GameThread (even the wrongheaded ones) and your readership. Please leave your thoughts about tonight's game in the comments. Here's the highlights to the game from NHL.com in an embedded video:

The biggest sin was the goal in the 2nd period
John,
I know how difficult this write up probably was for you.
Let me say that I’m angry when Lemaire said earlier in January that the team was just trying to “make it” to the Olympic break (I paraphrased). It shows you the mentality. I believe the team is coming somewhat prepared for these games, but in the bigger picture – they’re LOOKING ahead. They’re saying, OK 2 more weeks – then after the Olympic break. We’ll have back Martin, Clarkson and Elias (who will probably be back before then).
I’m angry at Mottau’s constant mistakes and angry at the D in general. It makes me think getting Scott Niedermayer is that much more important.
But I know most here will say the last couple minutes really ticked them off the most (as the ones in Toronto did), but the Devils committed cardinal sin NUMBER ONE, when they let LA get a goal with under a minute in the 2nd period. YOU DON’T ALLOW A GOAL IN THE LAST MINUTE. . . and that allowed the Kings to win this game.
Our record against the West continues to be abysmal, but silver lining – these points are not gained in conference.
It makes a very interesting back-to-back with Toronto. If they can win, they ruin the debut for the new players and can probably win all 3.
I have respect for most sports fans with 2 exceptions: NY Ranger fans who grew up in New Jersey, and Dallas Cowboy fans who can't name the capital of Texas.
I don't know...
Pretty good game for me.
But seriously, that sucked. Sorry.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
its a shame.
57 minutes of shutout hockey last minute of the 2nd period goal given up. Last 2 minutes of 3rd period 2 goals given up. Does this sound familiar?? Pittsburgh and Washington both get 2 points today. Definitely a much needed win. Same person in the net as the last time this happened oh was that game 7 last year. I know it was not his fault. What do you people think?? lets hear it..

So I take it you’re angry…..
The Kings shouldn’t have won this game. They shouldn’t have won in Boston. They shouldn’t have won in Detroit. But somehow, the Kings are just having a magical season.
I’m STILL trying to figure out how Simmonds scored that goal. But the Devils should’ve been more focused on getting Smyth out of the goal mouth. That’s why the Kings got him, and the Devils didn’t seem to make an effort to knock him out of the way there.
First thing I thought of was “is this Carolina all over again?” I don’t watch enough Devils games to know how often this happens, but with a goalie like Brodeur, there’s really no reason why you should lose if you lead late in the game.
The Kings got lucky, for maybe the third time on this five-game road trip. But it doesn’t mean it’s the end for the Devils. Fact of the matter is, there’s only one other team in the NHL I’d less want to face: the Canucks. This’ll just be one loss that no Devils fan will remember come April.
Denis Gauthier sucks at hockey... and life.

We will recover.
I hope I dont ever remember this loss. I was sitting there in the middle of the third thinking that we were going to score a couple more goals and put this game away. 2 minutes left im making my kid food cause the game is over and I come back and we lost. Wow seriously maybe 2 minutes gone. Heart breaking but we will recover. Come on lets get these bad losses out of our system and move on.
LETS GO DEVILS!!!

i had de ja vu
God that reminded me of game 7 last year so bad it hurt. The devils need to be able to hold on to leads and not sit on them its ridiculous. I feel like they blow leads to much. They seriously need to work on not sittin back at all, and my god the greene tripping penalty i almost lost it, then i did when the Kings scored. Cant wait till we get clarkson elias and martin are back and the team is healthy. Toronto is going to be interesting i mean whos there offense now? They traded blake and stajan.
I agree. This felt very simular to the game 7 of last year. I truly hope they get the kinks worked out soon. We need to get this team back into full gear. Time to end this sillyness of getting tired at the end of the season and have a solid playoff run. IF lou needs to make moves then do it! This game really earked me. It should have been a win.
Anger causes one to not sleep well so....
Steve: They didn’t sit back. There’s no way you can tell me they didn’t. They put up more shots in that period than in any other, they were aggressive on the PP, every line looked to break through LA’s defense. That was not sitting back and if you think it was, you have a very different definition of “sitting back” than the actual one.

Or to summarize that short bit: SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN. Why in the world do teams set up screens, because the best goalies in the world can’t stop what they can’t see. Yeah, it’s all Marty’s fault he didn’t go all Hextall on Ryan Smyth (roll eyes). I’m going to bed.

Exactly
and by the way the Kings have taken the long way around to learning the lesson about crashing the net and screening the goalie. so it’s good for them that pucks are going in that way. i don’t think it was luck at all. it just wasn’t pretty.
Wait till this year.
I can’t believe people are blaming Marty. He’s the last person who should be blamed. That weird angle goal was just that: weird. And if I remember right, the other two goals had screens by Smyth. Last I checked, Marty didn’t have x-ray vision.
But in any case, I’m still too shocked and disappointed to blame anyone. Part of it is the general problem of certain players getting too much ice time and getting worn down. But I don’t know; I’m too frustrated to write much more.
Beyond the angriest and most passionate post ever.....
Both goalies looked sharp, and the Kings got what all teams in form get – luck.
Zubrus, Neidermayer and Parise should have all scored and the final score should have been 5-1.
But that’s sport I guess.
Ireland? An Ice Hockey Team?
You'd better believe it...
that as a heart breaker to see live.
the devils powerplay had the chance to put it away and didnt, and sorry but broduer looked out of position on the tying goal,a shame because he was excelent threwout the rest of the game.i would like to remind devils fans that even in the best season the devils have ever had there were signifigant slumps.i personally think they will break out of this one this week because the rest of the atlantic has caught up to them.

Biggest shocker for me was that I felt we played very well in the first period. Very well considering how poorly we were playing lately so maybe I was looking through the skewed lens of optimism. But none the less, I took that as a sign of things turning around for us. Look at the positives. Lately Parise and Zajac are scoring… and that’s just about it. Elias will be back soon. Clarkie will be back soon and Martin too. I knocked Zubrus LOTS, but he came back and is having an impact. We are clearly in a SERIOUS slump and the game review confirms that. When we have no answers as to why they are playing poorly it leads me to believe it is nothing more than a slump. It’s painful especially with the success we had in December, but the tide is turning guys. This will be a blessed wake up call and the timing couldn’t be better for the slide. Olympic break coming, and then there is still time to get back on track to go into the playoffs red-hot. BUT, (VERY BIG BUT), this needs to turn around very soon. We need a few great games before the break, and look who we face in the next two weeks. A revamped Leafs team, Blue skirts, back to back Philly, Preds, and our friend the Canes.
Gut check time for the Devils. Serious gut check.

Oops
After my first line, I forgot to write that the 2nd and 3rd periods were OK/so-so/blah.

Indeed it is gut check time
First off, below is more of a therapy session for me than really coming up with the answers.
I try to be pretty level headed. Even good teams are going to have slumps – that’s hockey. But that was a very bad loss. From a mental standpoint, that is the worst loss of the season, by far, in my view. This team needed to get some confidence, and instead the opposite could come from this game. Does not matter the circumstances, blowing not just the lead, but then the game in last two minutes AT HOME can really shake the confidence, even with veterans. 3-6-1 in a 10 game strech has to be the low point.
I don’t have any answers – the 2nd and 3rd lines the team does look a bit worn out, but you can’t argue the whole team is tired with the way Parise and Zajac have been playing. The game does not fall on Marty, but I would still play Danis more. I just don’t think it is best to start Marty 76 times or maybe even more in the season – and I am the biggest Marty fan out there.
Bottom line is this is where we find out what this team has deep down. The 3 games this week are very winnable. If they can bounce back, I think all will be fine. If they continue to stumble, then I think the season will end up in disappointment. I don’t have any science for that, I just believe that is the way it will play out. Pittsburgh is going to come hard, and they will believe they can do it.

I would agree with the general sentiment that this was the worst loss of the season. Not necessarily because of the overall effort that the Devils put forward throughout the entire game, but because of the results that transpired from a complete collapse in front of the home crowd with barely five minutes to go in the game.
John, I agree with you that the setting of this game is quite different (Game 7 Playoffs VS Regular Season Matchup in January) and the actual method of scoring goals was different (relatively unhindered VS screen). But I think its impossible not to find some form of comparison between this game and last year with Carolina because the RESULTS are the same: two late period collapses. It was disturbing to say the least. This is about as demoralizing as they come. And I’m really not sure what the solution would be, either. Everyone needs to take more responsibility for how they contribuited to the loss. But at the same time, I don’t think the Devils played necessarily bad throughout the entire game. They just couldn’t finish.
So damn frustrating.

MOTTAU
How long can we continue to have Mottau in our top 6? This isn’t the only game he has proven to be a liability. I’ve been saying for a long time that Mottau could be a good 7 guy to fill in, but shouldnt be in our top 6.
Martin will be back soon, and it will be a shame if Fraser sits and Mottau plays.
With that said, Mottau is a UFA after this season and wont be back unless we trade away fraser or corrente or eckford before the deadline.
Not to get to far ahead but, WHITE-SALVADOR-ODUYA-GREENE are set for next season, and Martin will more then likely be back, so Number 6 and 7 has to come from the three young guys…
Unfortunately, the only people who can do anything about the travesty that is Mike Mottau don’t see him as a problem, and that’s downright mindblowing to me. In this particular game, it wasn’t necessarily him over anyone else. But over the season as a whole, he’d lead the league in assists if they counted all the times he assisted on the opponent’s goal. He’s a turnover machine, terrible positionally, and Colin White has had to cover his ass so many times it’s gotten him into trouble as well.
Granted, with Martin’s injury, it’s probably better to let our defensive prospects get playing time in Lowell and have Mottau play, but when Martin comes back, what SHOULD happen in the world of logic is that Mottau sits, Fraser continues to play. I think the Devils would be very surprised if they just let Fraser handle some of these pressure situations and see what he can do.
But in the world of reality, it’s as if Mottau has some kind of spell over Jacques and Lou, because on any other team in the league this hack would have been out the door. Hopefully if he’s not traded he’ll be off our books for good this summer…but I wouldn’t count on it.

I like this talk of more Fraser and less Mottau. Lets see how this kid can handle some pressure. He in the very least has the size to make up for a lack of experience (ok maybe that won’t make up for all the inexperience).
Trial by fire I say. If it doesn’t work, we go back to Motts, if it does, we just built up a kid’s confidence big time and that he can take into the playoffs.

Fraser
I’m on the fraser bandwagon when Martin returns. I agree with White not being paired with Fraser because they are both similar builds and play a similar style of hockey. In fact Fraser kind of reminds me of a young White. Fraser has proven his worth many times so far this season. He’s stuck up for players when they’ve been punished (Elias) and, despite the few rookie mistakes he has made, I would say his benefits have far outweighed his negatives.

If not for this its a much better month. They also lost to Ottawa 3-Zip on the 26th which after a really good game vs the Islanders. They didnt show up at all vs Ottawa.
I’m not saying they shouldnt have lost yesturday. Just was not the worst. imop
You know. They have lost most of these games because its been a overall bad effort. Everyone seems to want to nit pick Mottau or the Defense in general. But what would really help, is if some pucks would go in the net when Parise and Zajac are not on the ice.
But what would really help, is if some pucks would go in the net when Parise and Zajac are not on the ice.
Indeed. The Devils went 11-4 in December when Parise and Zajac scored 4 goals combined thanks to the rest of the team stepping up (while it’s not 5 G and 4 A, at least Rolston has been shooting, Bergfors is the biggest missing producer since a 7 goal December!)
