Lou Lamoriello: Brian Rolston to have surgery for sports hernia, out 4-6 weeks
Tom Gulitti reports big news. Rolston will need surgery for a sports hernia. He will be out for 4-6 weeks and will go on long term injured reserve. The Devils will still play with 16 tonight, but will make roster decisions tomorrow.
Yes, this only buys the Devils time, but Rolston on LTIR will free up more than enough space to replace all of the missing spots on the roster and give them a long time before having to make a permanent move.

Some times you need to be good, and other times you just get lucky. We just got lucky.

That will be enough time...
That should be enough time for someone else to decide that they need someone like Zubrus (say, b/c of some injury) and are willing to trade for him without forcing the Devils to give up an additional draft pick.
This is quite a stroke of luck for the Devils, though I do wish Rolston a speedy recovery.
Expect a post on the call ups tomorrow
So let me just say it here now: CALL UP ZHARKOV.

yeah, we need him to repeat his goal scoring success from last season. Um, wait. Never mind.

He moves the puck well, he’s fast, he knows how to backcheck, and he’s played the role before. For a fourth line option, there’s no one in Albany that’s better, in my opinion.

Agree. He’s very energetic and plays the boards well and uses his body. John, you remember this conversation we had before free agency, here and here.
This was the potential line up:
Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Elias-Arnott-Zharkov
Rolston- Zubrus-(Clarkson)
Tedenby/Pandolfo-Josefson/Henrique-Palmieri/PL3
So the addition of Kovalchuk and the Pandolfo buyout really doesn’t change the line-up that much. But we both had high hopes for Zharkov. I would be comfortable putting him with Zubrus and Clarkson on the 3rd line with a Leblond-Mair-Pelley 4th line. Talk about a good forechecking line with an aggressive hitting 4th line. Unfortunately it’s temporary.

Best News I've Heard all Day.
Sorry Brian, but this was probably one of the better situations we could have had. This gives us plenty of time to figure things out.

Beware of "irrational exuberance"
Like I said in another thread, this is merely a “stay of execution”. This is neither a “pardon” or even “commutation to a life sentence without the possibility of parole”, to carry the metaphor a little further.
Another team’s GM is not about to change their behavior just because we’ve dodged the most immediate bullet. Most of them have their own teams and their own job security to worry about. They’ll make a trade with us if they see some benefit to them, but this development doesn’t suddenly mean the “asking price” for another team to take Zubrus (or whomever) off our hands has significantly changed. Barring some significant change elsewhere, most likely a serious injury, there’s no reason to think that we won’t be trying to pawn a player off in a few weeks…. and debating how much to throw in to get it accomplished.
But...
We aren’t as handcuffed as everyone says we are. If we don’t get a fair deal that we like, we can always waive people.

Quite true.
But all this makes the situation today different from the situation how? Sure, Rolston going to IR allows us to take care of our roster shortfall, but the big picture still hasn’t changed all that much. Sooner or later — sooner, in the paranoia that surrounds a number of us Devils’ fans these days insofar as how the League is going to sit on the franchise regarding LTIR — we’ll be right back where we were yesterday.
I’m not saying not to breathe a sigh of relief. By all means, all of us Devils’ fans should do so. I’m just raising a note of caution in the whole thing: Rolston’s injury is not a cause for celebration, because it hasn’t actually solved the problem. Acting like it has done so would be irresponsible.
On the contrary. I would call this exuberance (Zubrus?) quite rational. True this may have not solved the problem, but it did three things:
1. Cleared enough cap space to fill an entire roster. In one swoop.
2. Gave us at least a month and a half leeway to make a permanant move.
3. Allowed us to replace Rolston with someone who may be more effective / younger.
Out of all possible scenarios, as bad as it is for Rolston (who I have always loved as a Devil), this is realistically one of the better outcomes.

This is good in the short term (temporary cap relief), but pretty bad in the long term. With Rolston on an impossible-to-escape 35+ contract, we NEED him playing effectively and contributing when he’s not on IR. Having him slowed by nagging injuries will make these last two seasons of his contract be as painful as possible.
