Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Per @NHLDevils, the Devils have recalled Jacob Josefson, Matt Corrente and Tim Sestito after placing Brian Rolston on LTIR yesterday.

Instant Reaction: A little surprising. I had thought Vladimir Zharkov and David McIntyre would be the call ups and possibly Corrente (depending on the status of Anton Volchenkov).

Corrente gives the Devils a little more depth on the blue line and will be able to make a case that he deserves to be on the NHL roster.

Sestito, much like last year, will be energy off the bench in a fourth line role.

It will be interesting to see how Josefson fits in. Does he get 3rd line minutes or will he need to get a promotion from the 4th line? If he is instantly on the third line that sets up the fourth line at Adam Mair/Rod Pelley/Tim Sestito, which isn't terrible. One plus to having Mair/Pelley on the fourth line is that you can still utilize them on the PK without overplaying them. That said, I think Pelley has been really good the past two games and that the 3rd line/4th line minutes should be based upon the flow of the game.

Does anyone understand the system for the Devils' numbers?

Wasnt PL3 #22 just last week?

The Devils numbering system seems strange to me. Guys come up and get different numbers that previous seasons. I always thought that players get attached to their numbers, so why do the Devils do it the way they do?

by matty nyc on Oct 14, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s partly because of the limited number of available #‘s under 30. If you look at the Devils’s By The Numbers section of the Media Guide (worth the $12 bucks. Hours of reading) then you see that beyond Stephane Richer, Doug Gilmour, and Alexander Mogilny and a handful of others the Devils don’t give out many numbers higher than 30.

by Tom Stivali on Oct 14, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Then they are going to run out of numbers pretty soon! 3 and 4 already gone, 27 next, 30 not far behind.

by matty nyc on Oct 14, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I know the numbers are taken already, but to me Josefson is a good #20 and Corrente #29. But what are you gonna do

Dear Brian Rolston, please waive your no trade clause and leave New Jersey. Love, everyone.

I was just wondering why they didn’t call up Zharkov but then i realized with all the talent they’re calling up, its smarter to leave Zharkov in Albany as they will need him.

It was a shocker when Josefson was sent down to start the season – not surprising that he is called up at the first opportunity to do so. He would have started the season as the 3rd line center if not for his cap hit. He’ll be slotted in between Zubrus and Clarkson – are Pelley or Mair really going to take that spot away from him?

Corrente shouldn’t be a surprise either – the only other candidates would have been Eckford, Gelinas, and Davison. Eckford got into no preseason games, Davison I believe has to clear re-entry waivers, and Gelinas just isn’t ready. Also, Corrente brings a snarl and physicality that the Devils could use while Volchenkov is out for the time being. Also, Corrente’s cap hit kept him from sticking with the team – Taormina and Fraser’s cap-friendly hits certainly helped their causes to start the season.

As for Sestito…well there were a bunch of guys who could have been called up to be a fourth liner. I’m a little surprised it wasn’t PL3, but I guess the management may still be really ticked off at him for the instigating penalty. Otherwise, Vasyunov, Zharkov, McIntyre, and Palmieri all could have gotten the call, but I like what Sestito brings in energy and physicality over the rest of those guys, even if he’s not as skilled as them.

Also, don’t the Devils have space to call up more forwards? By my count they’re only at 12.

by dr(d)evil on Oct 14, 2010 12:22 PM EDT reply actions

The Devils have 8 defensemen right now, so they could call up one more forward.

by Tom Stivali on Oct 14, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

davison does not have to clear re-entry waivers. gelinas is also not a candidate, imo.

by Triumph44 on Oct 14, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

It will be interesting to see what they do with their lineup tomorrow night. Assuming they do the standard 12 forward / 6 defense lineup, I’m wondering who will be the odd man out on D. It’s obviously 1 of the 3 (Fraser/Urbom/Corrente).

I can’t imagine they call up Corrente to just have him be a healthy scratch. I’m hoping it’s Fraser.

by dasru on Oct 14, 2010 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

I am going to speculate on 11/7 with Sestito being the healthy scratch.

by Tom Stivali on Oct 14, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

this makes more sense, i think. 7 defensemen allows maclean and robinson the ability to keep certain guys out of tough situations.

Interesting

Out of the Devils current roster right now (excluding LTIR guys) there are 9 former first round picks:

Volchenkov, Corrente

Kovy, Zajac, Parise, Arnott, Zubrus, Josefson

Brodeur

5 of which the Devils drafted.

Tallinder, Elias, Langs were all 2nd round picks.

by Tom Stivali on Oct 14, 2010 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

I agree, I thought MacIntyre had a shot at a call-up, maybe even Henrique, but I’m exciting to [hopefully] see Josefson. Sestito works hard, too, so a Mair/Sestito/Pelley 4th line (you have three guys that can play at center there) is a good 4th line. I would expect Zubrus-Josefson-Clarkson to be the 3rd line.

Corrente can also give Urbom a night off. I would like to see him get a start or two.

Speaking of starts, Marty needs a day off within the next 10 days.

The team Twitter account also mentioned Mark Fraser will be out 4-6 weeks w/ a fractured hand

Wow...

Didn’t see that coming. Do we know if that happened during the fight or an unrelated time during the rest of the game.

Fire & Ice

Tom Gulitti on Fire & Ice reported that the fracture occured before the fight last night but that the fight probably made things worse. Here’s the link: http://blogs.northjersey.com/blogs/fireice/

I guess Urbom doesn’t have to worry about having to sit in the press box for the time being, then.

I’d imagine that the team would want to call up another defenseman though, what with the newfound (if temporary) glut of cap space we have, just to have a spare if someone else gets injured/ill and to push the kids to compete with each other a bit. But is there anyone left? Eckford, who didn’t get a sniff in the preseason?

by dr(d)evil on Oct 14, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i see few advantages to carrying a spare defenseman. they may do it, they may not, but unless it’s davison there’s really no point, and davison has to be carefully managed so he doesn’t become re-entry waiver eligible.

by Triumph44 on Oct 14, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

note: i am operating under the premise that volchenkov will be back by next week, where we don’t have a game until thursday. so davison would just be called up for 2 days. seems silly to me.

by Triumph44 on Oct 14, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Davison

I thought he was on a one way this year $500K in both NHL/AHL and would qualify for re-entry waivers. Could be wrong though.

by Tom Stivali on Oct 14, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

one-way alone doesn’t qualify you for re-entry. you also have to have spent a certain amount of time on an NHL roster, which davison did not last year.

by Triumph44 on Oct 14, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Understand the one way contract doesn’t mean anything. I had actually thought the games played in various leagues (320) was a disqualifier, and not a qualifier.

by Tom Stivali on Oct 14, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

That said, you are right. No reason for Davison to be called up.

by Tom Stivali on Oct 14, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

That and the fact it’s a 2 1/2 drive from Albany, getting someone here on short notice isn’t going to take much time.

What?? When did that happen? I presume during the Buffalo game or during practice?

From what TG has mentioned, it’s apparently from the Sabres game.

With Fraser out, I can’t see JMac playing Corrente and Urbom as that last pairing. Could be wrong though, as I would have never guessed a Fraser/Urbom pair at the beginning of the year.

This Rolston injury is quite a blessing in disguise, but I was really hoping for him to get off on a good foot this year. He looked decent enough in the preseason.

Maybe separate Greene/Tallinder for a couple games and have 1 rook on each pairing, swapping out for PP & PK as necessary…
