This was a surprise. Urbom had not played great, but I just don't get this move. Hopefully Rich Chere or Tom Gulitti can find out why this move was made. I will update later with any new info.

Either a trade coming up or they thought he needed seasoning not too unexpected

My guess: Volchenkov is coming back and they didn’t want Urbom riding the pine. Perhaps Corrente has passed him in the depth chart. Given their respective ages, I’d say Urbom can benefit more from time in Albany than Corrente. Not sure why they chose OM-G as a call-up, though.

I’ll have a little more to say about Urbom (and others) this evening. How has Magnan-Grenier done in Albany so far?

I think time in Albany will be good for Urbom. No idea why OMG was called up though

urbom was benched in the 3rd period and has treated the puck like a loaded grenade. not surprised that he is sent down, a little surprised that magnan-grenier was called up, but magnan-grenier’s salary is lower and would make room for bryce salvador to come back.

What is the latest on Salvador? I havent even seen him mentioned.

Been wondering how the recovery has been going as well.

He’s still out for the 10/24 of the LTIR, and that puts his comeback in the middle of a brutal western roadie at the earliest. I haven’t seen anything about his recovery yet, hope it’s going well. Not sure the western trip is the best time to bring him back though. Home for the Rags maybe on the 5th if he’s okay?

JMac says the move was to help Urbom’s development, and he was clearly out of position on 2 of the 4 in the second. He’s been positionally challenged all season so far, and while it was a daring experiment, I commend the coaching staff for calling it a “work in progress” at this point and sending him back for development.

As far as OMG goes, JMac knows him, if familiar with his style and how hard he fights for pucks and space. It’s a move that doesn’t really get made by any other HC other than Mac, but there’s a bit of familiarity there. OMG wants it, and wants it bad. This is the tail end of his shot to crack into the primetime, and he knows he’s fianlly get his chance. I hope it works out for him.

Unless he does something miraculous, OMG will probably be here for 1-3 games. A trip to Montreal (his home town, mostly), the game at home vs Buffalo, and a quick hop over to MSG. If Volchenkov isn’t back for the western roadie, there’s gonna be a big problem. There’s 8 more days for him to rest the neck and get back to skating.

If OMG does well, maybe Corrente goes back down, or shifts to a bench role for O or D, wherever needed. Only one of the two will be sticking around when Android gets back in there.

i like to think this is kind of a lifetime achievement reward for magnan-grenier. he’s been a loyal guy in the organization, plus he has a minimum salary. we saw this treatment given to similar loyalist alex brooks when NJ was cap-strapped in 2006-07.

If we get 19 games out of him and he doesn’t break a foot, I’ll be happy.

If he plays well enough to stick around, all the better.

i think hedberg is 100% gonna play against buffalo, cuz marty is 100% playing against ny and montreal

Urbom hasn’t been playing a whole heck of a lot (twelve minutes and change per game, if you average it out), and he’s looked very tenative and shaky when he has been on the ice. I think he’s the type of player who could benefit from twenty to twenty-four minutes a night at the AHL level playing in all situations.

OM-G has been in Lowell for the past several years. I imagine part of the logic behind this move is that Johnny Mac knows Olivier from last season and may have more of a comfort level. Considering we’re talking a #6/#7 defenseman on the roster, I can live with this — it isn’t like the season ought to hinge on that part of our roster. Furthermore, if Grenier cannot cut it at the NHL level, I’d rather find out now instead of hoping he can do the job four months from now when every game seems that much more important. I think we all believe at least one defenseman will eventually be traded (be it Salvador or White)…. for all we know, the Devils might have to throw in Fraser or Corrente or Eckford or someone else to get a deal done. If the Devils have multiple vacancies on their blue line later this season, it helps to know who can get the job done.
