New Jersey Devils Make First Moves, Have More to Make by October 6

As appropriate as it would be in this photo, Kovalchuk is not saying, "Welcome to the team, Matt Taormina" in this photo. (Photo by Paul Bereswill/Getty Images)

Today, the big news from the New Jersey Devils is that they've made another set of cuts.  As reported by Tom Gulitti this afternoon, Rob Davison, Jacob Josefson, Matthew Corrente, and Mattias Tedenby have been sent down to Albany of the AHL. Davison has to clear waivers, which is likely.  Goaltender Mike McKenna was already placed on waivers to be sent down last week (and cleared them); but has been re-assigned today.  The Devils go from having 28 left in camp to 23, the maximum number of players allowed on a NHL roster.

Of course, that group of 23 includes Anssi Salmela and Bryce Salvador. Salmela hasn't seen the ice in training camp and preseason, as he continues to rehab his knee.  Salvador was diagnosed with a concussion and has been listed as "out indefinitely" last Friday.  The Devils will most likely put both players on long term injured reserve (LTIR), which will reduce the roster to 21.   Until they are healthy, the Devils would be allowed to spend over the salary cap the equivalent of their cap hit.

The remaining group of players do include defenseman Alexander Urbom, defenseman Matt Taormina, and forward Adam Mair.  As of now, Mair has not been signed to a contract.  Since he hasn't been released from his try out contract, I think it's likely he's made the team.

So are the Devils cap compliant to at least start the season?  No. The Devils have to make more moves by October 6 at 3 PM.   I'll explain the current situation -  even assuming Salvador and Salmela are put on LTIR and Mair gets signed. I'll also have additional thoughts about the roster decisions in general after the jump.

Star-divide

The Current Cap Situation

CapGeek is normally on the ball with respect to cap moves. Already, you can see Taormina and Urbom on the Devils' active roster.  However, for some reason, Vladimir Zharkov is also on the active roster and he was assigned to Albany last Tuesday.  So the additions of Taormina ($510,000) and Urbom ($870,000) with the subtraction of Zharkov ($850,000) is really a net of $530,000 added to the total Devils' cap situation.   That $2.968 million figure now goes up to a little over $3.428 (it's technically $3,428,334).

Now, you may be thinking, "Great.  Salmela's and Salvador's cap hits combined is $3.515 million.  $84,416 isn't a lot of space, but LTIR is the solution."  Not quite. Once either of those players becomes healthy, the Devils will be forced to make a move.  You can be sure the league will be looking very closely at anyone on LTIR to ensure they are truly unable to play and not just being stashed for cap relief.   Salmela getting healthy can be easily remedied by moving Urbom down to the AHL (Taormina wouldn't clear enough space).  Salvador becoming ready to play just puts the Devils back in the same difficult spot they are in now.

Of course, even in that situation the Devils would only have 11 forwards on the roster.  Unless the plan is to have a defenseman play forward, they're going to have to fill in Zharkov's spot at forward.  Based on his performance and the fact he's still around, that would be Adam Mair.  The NHL's minimum salary is $500,000, so if or when the Devils decide to sign Mair (or anyone else who isn't signed, e.g. Dean McAmmond, Brendan Morrison) then they'll be over the cap.   At least $415,834 over.

It's not only in the Devils' interest in the long term to make a move to dump salary, but if they want a full roster of 12 forwards and at least 6 defensemen, then they'll have to make another move.  Regardless of the fact they can put Salvador and Salmela on LTIR.  The Devils can trade players, waive them and send them down to Albany, or (thanks to Chicago) loan players out to a European league.   Gulitti wisely noted that if the Devils want to demote or loan players, they'll have to put them on waivers by noon tomorrow so they have enough time to clear for the October 6 deadline.   Keep your eyes peeled on the waiver wire for that potential next move.

The Demotions of Tedenby, Josefson, and Corrente

Truthfully, Mike McKenna really didn't have a shot of being the backup goaltender this year since the Devils spent $1.5 million for one year of Johan Hedberg's services to do just that.  I didn't think Rob Davison had a shot to surpass the other defenders in camp.  He only got one preseason game, which seems to justify that thinking.  However, I'm am surprised that among the remaining three young defenders, Matthew Corrente got the boot in favor of Alexander Urbom and Matt Taormina.

Given the lack of offensive defensemen on the Devils, I thought Taormina had a long shot. However, going into camp, I felt the favorites were the more experienced Corrente and Tyler Eckford - each who had tastes of the NHL last season.  Well, Eckford didn't even play in a preseason game and Corrente only got 3 games.  The coaches had a much higher opinion of him, and earned 5 preseason games for his efforts.  In those games, Taormina produced a goal, an assist, and 6 shots on goal; along with some power play time.  As for Urbom, he too got 5 games and was even more productive with 3 assists and 9 shots on goal.

Certainly, Urbom and Taormina made their marks when given the chance and as well as Corrente played, the Devils don't really need another physical, defensive defenseman.  This quote from Lou Lamoriello is heartening at least:

"Matt is just a victim of numbers at this point and we want to really take a good look at the two offensive defensemen—Urbom and Taormina. That’s all. Nothing else. He had his best camp since he’s been here and he’s taken great steps. He’s very close."

Perhaps we'll see Corrente sooner rather than later depending on what other moves New Jersey makes to their roster.  Though, if this was his best, then what more does he have to do?  Wait until space is cleared?  Wait until there's an injury and he can make his case similar to Mark Fraser last season?  Wait another season? Tedenby (20) and Josefson (19) are young and this is their first season of pro hockey on this continent.  Corrente's 22 and is heading into his third season of minor pro hockey.  If not now, then when?

That's part of the reason why I have no problem with the demotions of Mattias Tedenby and Jacob Josefson.  Tedenby showed his speed and some of his other offensive skills in preseason.  Preseason also showed that Tedenby was easily moved off the puck.  In addition to getting stronger, getting acclimated to the North American game in Albany will benefit him in the long run.  If he happens to be crushing it in upstate NY, then the Devils can always recall him; though I'd prefer the NHL-experienced and future Corsi machine Zharkov to be the first choice for any call ups at wing.

Jacob Josefson got a similarly long look in camp as Tedenby, since each got 4 preseason games to play in.  However, Josefson wasn't strong on faceoffs (something Matt showed yesterday), he wasn't productive, and somehow went 4 games playing with NHL veterans on his wings and only registered 2 shots on net.    Like Tedenby, one could tell he's talented but at the same time could really use some time in the AHL.  Some more strength, more professional experience, and playing at the AHL level can only serve to help him.   As I've said on Talking Red, I'm a lot more comfortable with a veteran Dainius Zubrus centering the third line than throwing a not-quite-ready Josefson into the NHL fire.

Your Take

Even the end of the offseason has to be tense and exciting for New Jersey.  Now I want to know what you think. What do you think the Devils should do in the next two days to get under the cap?  What do you think the Devils will do in the next two days?  How do you feel about Corrente going to the AHL for another season?  Do you think he'll be back shortly?  What's your reaction to the Tedenby and Josefson demotions?  Do you think the Devils will keep Urbom and Taormina, or will they decide one over the other shortly?  As always, please leave your answers and other relevant thoughts about these topics in the comments. Thanks to Tom for the FanShot earlier, and thank you for reading.

Fair enough. The point still stands, if the Devils want to sign a 12th forward or call one up, the Devils will be over the cap.

Crazy

So Zubrus gets traded to Calgary for Morrison in an obvious salary shedding move. This is the favor Calgary repays Lou for letting them talk to Brent Sutter without objections. Lou blows a kiss to Gary Bettman.

Just saw how over the cap the Flames are. So much for that . . .

The Flames are fine, for the moment. Langkow and Stajan are probably headed to LTIR at least for the time being, and that leaves them some wiggle room in the short term. I doubt they’ll pile on extra salary, as not to get into a bind when their guys get healthy, but Morrison fills an immediate need for them.

Edmonton or St. Louis

It seems like they could use Zubrus. And St. Louis had a ticket scheme that was banking on making the playoffs.

Who’s as desperate as Lou? No one. But who could use a quality guy like Zubs to truly help out their team?

I’m predicting he goes to St. Louis Blues . . . or Langenbrunner gets traded to the Leafs.

You do realize Langenbrunner has a NTC. And I’m not sure why Toronto would need a mid-30s RW whose recent production, while good, is while he’s playing alongside excellent forwards like Parise and Zajac.

St. Louis then!

I agree – but why do I keep hearing these rumors? Granted they’re from a week ago.

But do people secretly know that after the bad taste in his mouth after the playoffs that he’d be willing to go? Now granted they’re rumors and Langs did say:

“I think in my situation, having a no-trade clause, at least I’ll have a heads up . . . I’m not going to be caught be surprise by anything.
according to ”http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=538896" target="new">NHL.com but while I realize that and you do, even Gulitti wrote about it. Why then?

Toronto doesn’t pass the smell test — the Leafs don’t particularly have a need for Langenbrunner given how they’re building their club, and Langenbrunner doesn’t fit in with the Leafs (especially in a contract season).

Now, Colorado does make some sense to me, at least at first blush. I wouldn’t take some of these reporters (even TG) too seriously, however…. when you have large numbers of column inches to fill up on a given day, and no impressive story demanding itself be written, these are the sorts of things that pop up.

Unless there’s something we don’t know about, or unless Lou is blown away with an offer, I don’t think Langenbrunner gets traded this season. He’s too valuble to the NJD, especially as he’s one of the handful of players on the club who out-performs his contract, and the cap room gained by letting him walk at the end of the year is a valuble asset in its own right.

Zubrus is the guy getting moved, IMO…. and it simply is a question of where he’s being shipped out to.

Can anyone see White being demoted to Albany and we shed his $3 million salary ? Hes doesn’t have a NMC so it could happen. Im not saying hes bad but it could be an option.

I don’t. He’s too good to be dumped; and if the Devils are willing to pay a guy $3+ million to go Albany, why not make it Zubrus?

True, and if Zubrus was demoted they could bring Josefson for 3rd line center. After i asked that i listened to the Talking Red podcast and heard your opinion on White. Very good podcast i enjoyed listening to it ,hope you guys can continue doing it.

I might acually care about the albany devils this season with some of our future top six forwards on it. Tedenby-Josefson-Zarkov should be a sick line in the A.

I also just found out that dean mccammond was not signed by the islanders, so maybe the devils might be interested in brining him back for fourht line center duties.

Lou made the roster moves he did today (the “kids” to Albany) to put himself in a position where he technically doesn’t have to do anything more to get under the cap. I don’t think this is the Opening Night roster, mind you, but I do think he’s trying to put himself into the best possible position for the next 48 hours, because now he is no longer required to make any sort of move, veterans to Albany included. It doesn’t mean he has leverage (he doesn’t), but that he’s reduced the amount of leverage other GMs can hold over him…. and that’s a good thing.

I very much believe that Dainius Zubrus is headed out the door in the next 48 hours, with Josefson then being recalled to center the third line and “learn on the job”. Of all the Devils that look to be potentially on the chopping block, I think Zubrus is the easiest to move and likely not to require a treasure trove of picks and prospects to get off the team. I’m not so sure that Adam Mair is the fourth-line center, and frankly I’d just as soon not have him there. I can live with Dean McAmmond, but I see Mair as a veteran version of Rod Pelley, with no particular need for the Devils to have redundancy on the fourth line in that fashion.

I believe one of Urbom or Taormina will be sent to Albany around the end of the month, but keeping both of them is an opportunity to see what happens when the games “are for real”. I liked what I saw out of both of them this pre-season, but I imagine that a point will come where Lou and Johnny Mac decide at least one of them is better served by playing huge minutes in all situations at Albany, while the other sticks around to man the point on the second PP unit and otherwise play alongside Tallinder (I think we’ll end up with Greene-Volchenkov at some point as our top “D” pairing).

I also believe Corrente will be back up sooner rather than later, but that it is simply a numbers and cap situation at this point. It makes sense to have Corrente around if the Devils are going to go with 21 or 22 instead of 23, because he’s demonstrated he can play both forward and defense, plus he’ll drop the gloves if you want him to. That sort of versatility becomes more important with a short bench, unless you wanted to shuffle players back and forth between NJ and Albany depending on need.

by acasser on Oct 4, 2010 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Lou said McAmmond isn’t coming back. Pelley was not capable as a 4th line center, and as a wing he demonstrated more of an ability to make hits. Redundancy isn’t important when you’re considering the 4th line – Mair is an energy player who’s got a minor scoring touch.

I’m hoping that Clarkson is moved instead of Zubrus, but I think Lou might go with 20 at first and sort that out next week.

I don’t think the Devils want to shift Corrente around from forward to defense. His defensive positioning is what’s keeping him from the NHL – messing with that is a bad idea and will hurt his development. If Corrente were a veteran player, that might be acceptable. I also don’t think he will necessarily be back up if the roster goes to 22 or 23 – he’s not an extra defenseman. He should be playing, either in the NHL or AHL. People get hurt, and Corrente will go in at that point.

njdevs. i’m far from the most strident ones. i just don’t think the difference between clarkson and zubrus is worth wasting an EL year on josefson, if it can be avoided. i also don’t like the idea of 19 year old players playing 100 games, and if the devils hope to go far this year, that’s what’d have to happen.

most of the fans whose opinions over there i respect feel this way about clarkson, but they’re not overly vocal on the subject. i tend to waffle based on how clarkson is doing at the time. still, he was inexplicably bad in the pre-season. if he doesn’t knock it off, he will never be better than a bottom 6 forward.

If someone is going to Albany, they need to clear waivers first to be reassigned. That’s 24 hours. Figure news of a move to bury someone in Albany would happen by noon today, getting their salary removed by noon wednesday, with a 3 hour window to do anything else needed.

Expect news by lunchtime today. Wait for it.

by Murdoc on Oct 5, 2010 7:48 AM EDT reply actions

Just for clarification

What happens to Adam Mair? If they don’t have the room to sign him then he has to go down to the AHL or get released right? The point is that knowing what they are going to do with Mair is going to be a very good indication of how they plan on handling their cap issues. On a side note, David Hale was put on waivers by Ottawa.

by NJPenguins08 on Oct 5, 2010 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

Mair isn’t on contract, so he’s just there waiting and practicing. He can go home whenever he wants, and doesn’t add or subtract anything from a salary cap.

by Murdoc on Oct 5, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand

that he’s not on contract, but he appears to be the 12th forward unless the Devils bring up a defenseman. Since he was not sent down to Albany or released yet, it makes me believe that the Devils will make a move by tomorrow, which will eventually be necessary when Salvador or Salmela returns (although the Devils could hide Salvador in Albany).

by NJPenguins08 on Oct 5, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

It certainly does appear that he’s part of one plan for moving forward. I’ve been impressed by his play.

I wish I could see CapGeek from this network, but it looks like:

1. Salmela and Salvie end up on LTIR. Buys time.
2. One big name falls out of the picture somehow. Zubs wouldn’t surprise me, although I like what I’ve seen from him so far. White, Langs or Rolston would, but they’ve been mentioned theoretically, and nothing is completely impossible.
3. I think a min contract for Mair, and JJ and Corrente back up to the big club fill out the roster nicely. (given they fit under cap, and I think it should, but again, can’t verify the numbers. )

by Murdoc on Oct 5, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Even leaves space (temporarily) to bring Zharkov back. Mair made $775K last year, so even assuming he gets $700K, a 24-man roster looks like this, just under $2.8M over, so any of the 3 you mention moving on would make it fit:

Waivers

There’s no indication that the Devils placed anyone on waivers today. Unless Lou changes his mind about going with the bare minimum of 20 for Opening Night, I have to believe there has to be a trade of some sort in the works.

by acasser on Oct 5, 2010 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

i think his comment about not going with 20 is pure lou-speak. that said, there very well could be a trade in the works.

by Triumph44 on Oct 5, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Lou is trying to maximize his leverage as not to get too badly skinned in any move(s) he makes. Now I’m sure you’ll say “Hey, acasser, Lou doesn’t have any leverage!”. In an absolute sense, you are right…. in a relative sense, Lou “gaining leverage” means other teams don’t have as much to work with.

I could see Lou theoretically going with 20, and shuttling players back-and-forth to Albany as needed while waiting for other things to develop. Someone like Dainius Zubrus might become more attractive to another (contending) team if they suffer a couple of injuries, and Lou just might play the waiting game and see if something falls into his lap.

1- I think it means the Devils will be keeping the centers they have now and that’s it. It appears that short of a trade coming out of nowhere (as if there was any kind with this team), the Devils are going to be just below the cap to start the season and play with 11 forwards. Which I don’t like at all.

2- Alexander Urbom was a 3rd round pick in 2009.

I know moving Salmela and Salvador off the roster isn’t exactly the way it works, but the numbers would work out the same regardless. Here’s one possibility of what it could look like. Dressing 11 forwards, Zajac, Arnott, Zubrus, Elias, and Rolston could all take turns double-shifting as 4th line center so no-one is overworked by being completely double-shifted. For how much time the 4th line would get anyway, we’re talking what, 1 extra shift per period?

1 extra shift each, that should say.

Still, it’s not a good strategy to start double shifting a forward from the get-go. It’s increased work for a few players, there could be chemistry and match-up issues (Who would run with Leblond-Pelley and not be out of place? Clarkson?). Usually, teams shorten their bench in the third period not the first when they know who’s crucial for their team’s success and who’s not. MacLean won’t have that luxury for the first 10 games.

MacLean won’t have that luxury for the first 10 games.

Or until Lou finds cap space somewhere else, which he has to do regardless. So it very likely won’t be 10 games.

I don’t understand why everyone keeps thinking it’s impossible for a trade to still happen. I can see the Devils trading Zubrus, bringing Josefson back up for third line center and then signing Mair for fourth line center. With Salvador and Salmella on LTIR, the Devils would have $2 mil in cap space.

Not impossible

but with only 21 hours and about 8 minutes before they have to provide their opening day, cap-friendly, roster, it’s less and less likely by the minute. Although none of us know what Lou may or may not have up his sleeve.
